Having been through some previous ownership, the current owner obviously takes an enormous amount of pride in his bar, working behind the bar and building a personal relationship with his customers. The wings, basted with a house-made wing sauce, are definitely worth the stop. A little spicy, plenty of flavor, absolutely delicious. And the house made chili, made from scratch also, nearly outshines the wings. The bloody Mary's are definitely worth their $3 price point. A little spicy, a little sweet, full garden, kinda addicting. All in all, I would regularly drive the 30 minutes from Minnesota to spend a Sunday at this Packer loving, hometown, friendly and delicious bar. Swing by, grab some grub, shoot some pool, and enjoy.

There's really no redeeming value to be associated with this place other than it being a cool place to have a beer during the hot summer months. And downright freezing during the winter! Me finding myself tethered to John (a local gadabout) who drags me to a seemingly endless line of beverage intakes of an alcohol nature, and I not being use to the effects of cold and ice. The ice in the parking lot can be treacherous, and the inside is like aging beef in cold storage! Ahhh but that only adds to its charm. Tie that in with the warm hearts sharing the bar and it makes for a memorable experience. But not one that I would frequent on a daily basis. I heard stories about there being caves associated with Nova. Who knows, maybe someday John will get me an invite to explore and I'll come across Injun' Joe just like Tom Sawyer. My luck though it'll be a rabid bat I find. A memory ever associated with the bowels of the dive which is Nova. Honestly speaking, I had fun at Nova, cold and all. We would have stayed longer but alas, a dinner engagement loomed which would provide us the opportunity to indulge once more, and more importantly, thaw out! Quick Tip: After you've had your fill at Nova you can walk down to the corner for ice cream at the Dairy Queen. You'll find that novelty warmer than what you had to endure at Hudsons finest dive.

Space to move around, and if you're drinking alone, no pressure to engage in conversation. The dive element is there, but hidden by cleanliness. You can almost fool yourself into thinking that you're at mom and pop restaurant instead of a mom and pop bar. Low-key and friendly. Sandy, the owner, was our bartender for the visit. She was very nice while talking us up. Sandy seems happy with the clientele, and they seem to like her too. The fact that she had the time for conversation will tell you how busy the place was, or more to the point, wasn't. As sleepy as Main Street in Mayberry. Otis didn't make an appearance. Stop in and pound a couple, then mosey across the street to Starrs for a couple more. Sounds like a fun filled afternoon to me. Quick Tip: I don't expect anyone to read this review, seeing how Mallalieu Inn has been open for a century, and this is only the second review on Yelp. I know, it's a bit tongue in cheek, but heck, Yelp has been around for like 20 years. Taking that into consideration, low-key may be a couple levels too high!

Unpretentious local neighborhood dive bar - inexpensive, honest - come as you are…read more This is the only place I've been to in Hudson that I feel is a genuinely unpretentious place. They don't pretend to be anything they aren't. It's a blue collar place that has beer in bottles, soda in cans, basic food that's good and cheap and served in a basket. Mallalieu was named after the lake that's behind the building. It was opened in 1908 by George Starr. This son, Ernest, opened the "Starr's Bar" across the street after prohibition ended. There's a lot of local history here. The owner is the also the bartender, the server, the chief cook and bottle washer. She's personable and good at what she does. After talking to a few people it looks like I should come back on Wednesday night for the steak fry or Friday night for the fish fry. Thanks, Mallalieu Inn! -Daddy Maxx Retro

A small casual local bar - 4 stars!…read more I suppose most people would call Huey's a dive bar. I call it a neighborhood bar - not fancy at all - old school, small, intimate, casual, and friendly. Cheap drinks. They open early and they close late. Huey's is obviously a drinking bar. The only food on offer is potato chips and Brothers frozen pizza, made in Downing, Wisconsin. They're cooked one at a time by the bartender with a small toaster oven in back. I never tried Brothers before. I was surprised, it's pretty good for frozen pizza. It definitely beats the heck out of Heggies frozen pizza, often found at similar local bars in Minnesota. I read the previous negative comments and we didn't see any of that stuff. (The other reviews were almost 10 years old though.) The bar definitely did NOT smell like urine. (We were on the lookout for the urine smell after reading one of the reviews.) But the whole place actually smelled really nice! It smelled clean, despite sitting in back near the open restroom doors. I didn't experience any unfriendliness either. Everyone was very nice. That includes the local customers and the bartender. And the service was great. They also have a pool table and some arcade games. A few of the locals were playing a dice game with the bartender at the bar. Nice! Thumbs up! - Maxx

These are not necessarily negatives, just part of the epxerience. There is a food menu, however, there is no kitchen. The food is delivered from the bar across the street. We had a beer & ordered some cheese curds. The beer was cold & the cheese curds were as close to Minnesota State Fair cheese curds as you can get. Really good.
