I was excited to finally eat at this place, I drive by it all of the time! My sister and I stopped in for breakfast. Maybe we should have looked into it beforehand because it wasn't what I was expecting! A thrift store on one side and restaurant on the other didn't make me feel like it was a "clean" eating environment. The seating area was some booths and a mish mash tables from the 80s and 90s, making it reminiscent of my adolescent years. After being seated we considered leaving, but didn't feel right about doing that. Our food was served on paper plates, which was quite unexpected. I ordered the corned beef and hash which was so salty I could barely eat it. My eggs were way under cooked. My sister was not impressed with her meal either. Gluten free eater here. This is a little hole in the wall place. I don't know much about its history but it seems it's been here a long time. It's a mix of a thrift store/reataurant. The booths and all the furniture looks as though they came from a thrift store. I liked the vibe. It's different. The menu is simple. Printed on paper and slide in a plastic cover. Minimalist. It's a very basic menu. I knew what I could trust. I got the all meat omelette and hashbrowns with no toast. The meat was salty but in a good way. The bacon was a little chewy. But overall it was a solid meal. They have hot sauces to chose from. My husband liked a habanero one. This place gives me home town rancher style hardy food. AWARENESS: The wife and I were on vacation in South Dakota in late June of 2022 when I had to have new tires installed on my truck in Rapid City. After the installation, we decided to find a local breakfast spot to eat at since, that's what you do when on vacation. Yelp came through again when reviews pointed us here to the Mud Hole restaurant. NARRATIVE: Let me start this review by saying, this is the most unique eatery I've ever had the pleasure of dining in. Walking up to address, I had to stop at the doors entrance and ask my wife if she thought we should knock on the door first. Why? because, Mud Hole looks like someones home from the outside and peeking through the window and opening the front door, it appeared it was a private home. Inside, the entire front and right side of the restaurant is loaded with second hand, five and dime type stuff. Old sewing machines. Old dolls, books and everything else you would find in a second hand store. To the left, there are both booth and table seats but nothing truly defining Mud Hole as a place to eat. Towards the back of the place is a doorway with menu signage all around it. And behind the window, the kitchen. When I say this place is unique, I mean it. I don't recall what the wife ordered but I ordered their single biscuit with gravy and two medium eggs. I also ordered a sweet tea. The food here is AMAZING! Home made buttermilk biscuit with farm fresh eggs, all served up on paper plates. SCENE: Mud Hole is located down town Rapid City on E Main Street at the corner of East Blvd, directly across the street from the fire station. Inside you'll find all kinds of second hand items for sale and of course, you can grab some great chow. Peeking through the ordering window into the kitchen area, I could see the kitchen is new and modern with all the bells and whistles and it was extremely clean. A no-frills diner with excellent food, made from scratch. There is a 'treasure' section before you get to the tables which just adds to the atmosphere. I watched a steady stream of locals come in who were greeted by name. It was random that it popped up on maps but a great call. So, this is NOT an upscale restaurant. What it IS is real. The owners are fantastic and run the place well. Yes, the furniture is a little worn and they serve on paper plates. It is also GREAT food at great prices. The food is prepared and brought to you piping hot and there is so much food! This is not a place you are coming to, to get a five-star dining experience. You will get paper plates for service though, which kinda fits in with its ambiance. The restaurant is more like a thrift store with some tables added too people can sit and eat. But man am I telling you, this is one of the top 5 breakfast places I have been to in terms of food in my lifetime. It is absolutely amazing! I have been three times in 10 days and never once had an issue with service. All three dishes I got were A+! It seems to be a family operation. My friends talked this place up A LOT. So, maybe our expectations were a big high. However, this place is meh. First, we walked in and it smelled like my fish tank when I smell it up close -- earthy. It is a secondhand store that also does food. Interesting concept but I think it was the reason for the smell. Not the best first impression. The food was fine. I had the eggs, corn beef and hash, biscuit combo. I can't remember what the name was. While I didn't see them take the corn beef and hash out of a can, it tasted suspiciously like canned corn beef and hash. Eggs were fine. The biscuit was unremarkable. We drove 40 minutes to Rapid City from the Mt. Rushmore area, and it really wasn't worth that drive, at all. I have to believe there are better places to eat in the area. read more

Don't go here. These people probably have great food, but obviously don't know how to run a restaurant. There was no hostess At the front door but they had a sign that said to please wait to be seated. We waited about 20 minutes with half the tables empty, no one ever asked us how many people nothing. Only to have a waitress finally come over to us and about 3 other groups behind us and tell us it would be awhile for a table. Someone behind us asked if we could just be seated at one of the empty tables and wait. The waitress rudely said no and walked away. I had a work trip to South Dakota and we tried this place for breakfast. The food was really really good! It's definitely a family owned mom and pop shop with a thrift store inside as well. These types of places are always either a hit or miss and this place is definitely a HIT. I had the breakfast burrito with sausage and it was perfect. Ratio of egg, cheese and sausage was great. Wow, this place is amazing! Walking up to it, it looks like a hole in the wall, and you might be unsure what to think about it. Trust me though, you're definitely going to want to eat breakfast here! When opening the door, make sure you push it hard to open and then to close it. The door tends to stick at the bottom. At first, I didn't know if this was a restaurant or a shop because they sell legit antiques in the front of the store. When we walked in, there were locals seated around, so we went and chose a place to sit ourselves. We chose to sit by the front window at a tables and a booth. Immediately, a sweet, young lady came up to us and asked if this was our first time here. She let us know that we had to go up to the window to order, they would bring the food to us, and then we would pay afterwards. For myself, I decided to go with a sausage breakfast burrito with a cup of coffee, and I got the French toast sticks with bacon and apple juice for my son. My mom got the veggie omelette, fried potatoes, and English muffin. My dad got the Mud Bog, which was two biscuits stuffed with eggs, potatoes, and cheese while being smothered in gravy. My uncle got a bacon omelette, potatoes, and biscuits and gravy. Everything was out pretty quickly. Our meals were served on paper plates, which was so cool. My cup of coffee came in a Christmas mug, which I found very endearing. We also noticed the ice cubes in the water had a certain shape to them that seemed vintage, like they had been popped out of an ice cube tray. The food was oh, so delicious! We couldn't believe it! I have attached pictures to show everything. We felt like we had taken step back in time to eat at a diner, and this was pure Americana at its best. There was a man there who was so friendly as well, and I got the impression he might be the owner based on the way he was talking to the customers. Not only was the food excellent, but the prices were cheap! I think for what I ordered, it was only $13 or $14. Out of all the places we have eaten at in Rapid City, this is by far one of my favorites. If you happen to be here, definitely check it out for breakfast. The food and service was outstanding- exactly what we were looking for! This is a mom and pops /family owned restaurant and everything about the atmosphere & food gives you that "homey" feel. We are actually from Houston, Texas and here for the Sturgis and this will for sure be one of the things we look forward too when we come for the rally next year. A chalkboard menu (love) and very friendly staff to help make suggestions. We ordered the staple mud bog and a chicken fried steak. The bog was very good, fluffy biscuits with great sausage gravy. Not a huge fan of the potatoes in it, but it was good. The CFS was ok, kinda small and probably not made there. Coffee was spot on. Bottled apple juice, all for $22. Great price. read more

I can see why this place has good reviews. Rapid city seemed kind of like a food desert, mostly chain restaurants and regular run of the mill kind of places. Granted, I didn't stay in town that long, but only found one really good Greek gyro place that I loved, and everything else I ate was disappointing. But then on the last day of my trip, my hotel didn't have a free breakfast, and I was on the hunt for cheap eats. Mud Hole delivered on that. The breakfast was delicious and by far cheaper than anything else in town! Definitely add this place to your list.
