Mount Lassen/Shingleton KOA RV Park, Shingleton, CA - July 21, 2025 This is a very nice RV park. The registration process is simple. The staff are very friendly. They have a nice store that is pretty nicely stocked. I was especially impressed with all the hardware they had for RVs. They have ice, some food items, and drinks. The park is fairly spacious with nicely tree-covered sites. They have a picnic table and a fire pit. We had full hook ups. They have a fair amount of amenities at the park, including a very nice swimming pool, clubhouse, and a mini golf basket course. They have a nice dog run/agility area that our little puppy loved. They do have propane if you need it. The RV Park is just about 20 miles west of Mount Lassen national Park. It's also not too far from Bernie Falls.

Best KOA office for working after a day in the park.

This KOA Kampground is one of the best campgrounds we have ever stayed at. Located about 10 minutes from the front entrance of Lassen volcanic National Park, it is the perfect location to use as a base camp for your trip into Lassen. The staff is super friendly, from the moment you register, until the moment you leave. They are helpful and demonstrate a grateful hospitality knowing that you spent time and money at their facility. We stayed in the Kabins which were super clean, and comfortable, if not better than a Motel 6 or Best Western. And each Kanin had a family size picnic table, a non-ember wood burning fire pit, and a barbecue grill. Getting the non-ember flying wood logs lit is an adventure in patience and skill. Maybe you'll have more luck than we did with it. You have to use their wood because it is such a dry area, and you can see within the park how wildfires have raged and ravaged this national park. So a mindfulness must be taken to not allow any ember's or fire to get away. Showers are clean and great. Hot water was nice and hot. Floors were clean. And as a male, always appreciate when I could go into the bathroom and it doesn't look like another man's guts exploded into the toilet. Come on guys flush better! And as somebody who works from the road, the Wi-Fi was a solid 8.5 out of 10. A couple times it glitched and I had to go off camera for a zoom conference call. But if that's the biggest complaint I have, then it is excellent Wi-Fi for the purpose of email, being in communication with clients , if needed, and then unplugging and getting back to enjoy the outdoors. This is a flagship KOA, as we just stayed at a former KOA in the Eureka area, which was a 5 out of 10 and you can see has lost the commitment of the KOA brand. (Although the girl at that former KOA was very helpful- I'm talking about overall visual, cleanliness, and operation.) And last, a big happy birthday shout out to Tanner, who was greeting arriving guests at the front desk on his birthday. Well done! Chris & Trisha www.christrammellcoaching.com PS - The park is a 30 mile one way highway. We thought we would try and come back through the surrounding areas after exiting the southside because the KOA is on the north entrance side. I would recommend you come back through the park. The nonpark return way is pretty great for about the first 2/3 to go straight, drive a little faster, and feel like you're saving time. The last third is like driving through backwoods, it's kind of creepy, you can almost hear the banjos playing in the background waiting for the helpless travelers. KOA + stay in the park = a great time!!

Unbelievably clean! Excellent WiFi! Huge spaces! Wonderful walking trails in back. Huge k9 area. Our site was ready and clean at 3:00. Place was so peaceful. It's probably a little louder during summer. Spot 30 was AMAZING!! Definitely coming back!!!

Perfect night and weather for a fire!

Perfect spot to camp with family! Staff were friendly, walked around with a smile and kept the grounds in order. Restroom were always clean and the store offers needed camping items and food.

We rented the Log House. This is the only vacation home rental at a KOA. It used to be the Manager's house. It is huge and impressive. The staff is great, especially Doug. The only problem is that it does not have air conditioning. There is a portable air conditioner that we put in the living room so that everyone could cool off, but the bedrooms were really hot during the time that we were there. I would love to stay here but only during cooler weather... not in the upper 90s.

A great, family friendly KOA. The owners and staff are very welcoming and helpful. The campsites and RV sites are very well maintained. My family has been to this KOA and used the RV sites previously and a tent campsite this past trip. We now want to try out a cabin at this KOA on our next trip. The bathrooms and showers are very clean and well maintained. The KOA store on-site has everything from ice, lunch meat, bread, milk, propane, souvenirs and ice cream. The prices a reasonable. The pool, children's play area, basketball court, beach volleyball and the provided games on the grass are great. The close proximity to the Lassen Volcanic National Park entrance is very nice for day hikes and sightseeing. I'd highly recommend the Shingletown KOA to others.

This is a great KOA. Doug has been there through many owners and is fabulous. The new owners... over a year now... are wonderful and so is the entire staff.

A week prior to our arrival, I've contacted them via email and asked a few questions to prepare for our trip. They have responded the following day. I highly appreciated it. The gentleman who got us checked in was cool. It was quick as can be with an adequate overview of their KOA. Our lot was large and spacious. Everything was clean from the picnic table, fire pit to the pedestal. The lot was all gravel. It's perfect to avoid mudding and keeps the excess dirt dust from getting all over the place. Also, I was able to do a quick rinse on our travel trailer. Wifi was not reliable. It would work for a bit then completely choke. I'd prefer a slower connection than an unreliable one. This KOA is very family oriented. Bike rentals are available with paths to take a ride. Playgrounds and pool. They got it all for the youngsters. Had no problems with any, but one. A kid threw rocks at us intentionally. I highly recommend skipping the holidays and weekends, because by Sunday afternoon it was quiet. Every staff you see will either wave or awknowledge you somehow. Great management here. It reflects on their employees.

Wonderful time at this Koa. Site was beautiful, staff very friendly. Our dog loved the doggie park! Grandchild loved the park, the big swing and all the trails around the property. Easy drive up to Lassen, Hat Creek and the Subway Caves. Small town nice pizza parlor, gas and two grocery stores. Will be back!

Different parts of the trail, there is a different view of the fall. The view from bottom of the fall was breathtaking. Be very careful if you want to get close to the fall. The rocks can be very slippery. We went off season so the crowds were not as bad as expected. If visiting Friday-Sunday or during the holidays, reservations are required. We did not sleep the night we got there as we were trying to scramble to find another place to stay at. We ended up staying in our vehicle and contacted the manager to report the infestation. The manager claimed that they've done their due diligence to keep their cabins sanitized, but if you refer to the photos and videos I posted that is a complete LIE! Instead of enjoying our vacation, we ended up having to go to a local laundry mat to clean our clothes. Not to mention upon coming home my nephew finds a bed bug on one of his bags. Can you imagine the hell we've been through? It's terrible! To top it off, my niece's friend gets rushed to the ER yesterday due to these bed bugs biting her all over her body. She was sent home with topical and oral medication. Refer to the photos! I'm severely disappointed with the lack of accountability of the manager and its property. My sister tried speaking to a staff member today to follow up and she hung up on my sister after claiming someone would call her today to get this settled. We are planning to file a complaint and a report to the local health department. We are concerned that other people may encounter the same problem. Please beware!

I…read morehave a personal rule: I only count a national park as "visited" if I actually spend time there, hike or walk through it, and truly experience it. On this trip, we visited 14 national parks, and Lassen Volcanic National Park was one of the biggest surprises. The drive into the park was beautiful, and despite evidence of recent wildfires in parts of the forest, the landscape is recovering and remains absolutely stunning. Nature has an incredible ability to heal, and seeing young trees growing alongside older burned areas was a reminder of how volcanic landscapes are constantly changing. Lassen is one of the few places in the world where you can experience all four types of volcanoes: shield, composite, cinder cone, and plug dome. That alone makes it geologically fascinating, but what really impressed us was how much variety the park offers. One moment we were standing beside steaming fumaroles and bubbling mud pots that reminded us of a smaller, quieter version of Yellowstone. The smell of sulfur, the hissing steam, and the boiling earth beneath your feet make you appreciate that this landscape is still very much alive. The next moment we were hiking around peaceful alpine lakes with spectacular reflections of Lassen Peak mirrored in the crystal clear water. Manzanita Lake was especially beautiful, and seeing the volcano reflected on its calm surface was one of the highlights of our visit. We also loved exploring quieter trails to places like Lily Pond, where we could hike for long stretches while seeing only one or two other people. There is something special about having so much natural beauty almost entirely to yourself. For those who enjoy being on the water, the lakes are perfect for kayaking or simply sitting quietly and taking in the scenery. The combination of volcanic landscapes, mountain forests, meadows, lakes, and wildlife makes every part of the park feel different. We stayed in the nearby town of Chester, which turned out to be a charming little base for exploring the park. It has several good restaurants, friendly people, and everything we needed after long days of hiking. Lassen Volcanic National Park may not receive the attention of some of California's more famous parks, but it absolutely deserves it. It combines dramatic volcanic features with peaceful alpine beauty in a way that feels both exciting and calming at the same time. If you enjoy hiking, geology, photography, or simply discovering places that are a little less crowded, Lassen Volcanic National Park is a hidden gem that should be on every national park lover's list.

Nevertheless, we had a wonderful time here and would certainly return if we are back exploring the area. It's a USDA campground, falling under federal forest jurisdiction, so it's different in many ways from the state campsites we are used to. For starters, it's first come, first serve. So you are already trying your luck because there is no one to contact for a reservation ahead of time. Fortunately, there are many other campsites like this in the area, so if they are booked here, you have options. Other differences from state sites: The campsites were much bigger and more spacious. The bathrooms were chemical toilets vs. flush, like at Burney Falls (not a problem since the campground was so small and the host cleaned them frequently.) It's not well marked, either, so it's easy to miss this place. The only downside is that during the summer it is HOT and the tree cover is thin here. No matter which site you choose, expect your camp to be exposed to the sun most of the day. If I did it again, I would definitely bring some sort of big shade structure. The trees in this area are sparse and far between. All in all, consider it a great alternative to the busy, booked-6-months-in-advance sites at Burney Falls and other popular parks. Take your chances at a USDA site and you'll still be close to all the action in the Lassen area!
