There have been a few times I've felt unsafe in the wooded areas, so definitely pay attention to your surroundings! I went for my first yesterday. Stayed almost an hour. The rest of our time was just exploring. Sitting at the dock was by far the best time of my day. So glad there's a place to indulge in nature theraphy in Seattle. I came across this park ramdomly walking thru the hood. Its not a very big park by any means. It's nice little spot to have "me time" I guess you could say, haha. It's beautiful, quite and serene. Pritchard Island Beach is located in the Rainier Beach area, north of Beer Sheva Park. Several large cottonwoods flutter in the breeze as swimmers head for the raft, where they spring into the air from high and low diving boards. Others just sit on the beach admiring the view of Seward Park to the north and Mercer Island to the east. You'll find this a fine, quiet complement to the Atlantic City beach to the south, since there is no boat ramp ruckus here. I found this great! There is also a small picnic shelter for parties when available. In other CCs you can grab a chair if they are available or a person would just guide you about the procedure. Here, a lady would almost yell in a very rude way to ask for it. I answered her how would I know about a different process from where I come from or even whom to ask for it. She then told me it was her I should have asked for a chair. For a chair to sit!! Fortunately, we brought everything we needed and proceed to enjoy the wading pool for some minutes. Came here for the first time, the grounds are super nice and amazingly clean. I felt that it was a great "homey" environment for kids and a great place to spend the day. I like the park because it's great for all ages. The playground area for kids is covered in beautiful synthetic grass that is safe to play on, soft to fall on, which I love because it's not messy like wood chips or sand. They have slides, swings, and a seesaw. During the summer, you can play in the wading pool. There's a basketball court nearby, BBQ Grills, and also a shelter with picnic tables. There's a large grass area too for anyone wanting to picnic on a blanket. The bathroom is very close by attached to the back of the Van Asselt Community Center. Not everyone in Seattle has the same access to recreational opportunities. Some can afford gym memberships, fitness classes, and personal trainers, but most cannot. That is why Seattle Parks Foundation is partnering with the Trust for Public Land, MOMentum, Leschi Community Council, and Seattle Parks and Recreation to install free outdoor gyms, called Fitness Zones Areas, in public parks around the city. Each Fitness Zone Area includes 8 to 12 pieces of durable, easy-to-use, vandal-resistant equipment that can be used by everyone from teenagers to seniors to tone their arms and legs and get their heart pumping. While both paths are paved, the space could really benefit from some beautification or sculptures, although it was very quiet and peaceful. It's hard to access from the old town because it's on the OTHER (eastern) side of I-405 and you need to take a fly-over. Use google maps or a GPS to find it. The park is a pretty nice neighborhood park, but that only rates it 3+ stars in my book. The 5-star aspect of this park is that it is the jumping off point for some classic, very fun and technical mountain biking. Where are the trails? You could SEE them from I-405 if you were driving south near exit 2 (although it's not convenient to access them from here) . On I-405, if you looked to your east, you would see some high-voltage electrical lines coming down the hill. The trails are on the slope in the unbuildable easement underneath and near these lines. Thank god for the powerlines or some f'ing greedy developer would have developed the crap out of this area years ago. The area might not sound very scenic -- and in a few spots it's not with powerlines crackling overhead -- but mostly it's just trees, slope, and singletrack. You can access the trails by parking at the Phillip Arnold Park parking lot. Ride south for about 1/3 mile on the access road. Look for trails to your right (west). Take any trail you might find or look for the fireroad. Back up in hyeah is the hilarity of Tapeworm, Parasite, Crop Circles and other trails. These trails are wooded, tight, twisting singletracks -- back and forth, up and down -- with obstacles like boardwalks, drops, ramps, teeter totters, fallen logs,. In spots you'll get totally wedged up by crazy and stupid lines -- drop down over a 1/2 dozen tree roots, suddenly make a tight climbing turn, go betwen two trees a handlebar's width apart and then jump over a log. In other newly developed parts (mostly to the southern end) you can find some trails with bermed turns, whoo-dee-doos, and a jump or two. Extra points if you can find "Declan's Death Ride". The whole complex is fairly rideable in winter as the area drains well, but be careful not to tear up the trails when they're wet and muddy. In the summer (especially in overgrown areas) you will want to ride with a patch kit and/or Mr. Tuffy's in your tires -- lots of blackberry thorns on the trail. These are classic east-side trails -- enjoy them safely and watch for other riders. Stop at Naan 'n Curry in downtown Renton on your way home, have some delicious curry and say "hi" to Uncle Mike. I promise you'll have a hard time wiping the huge grin off your face at the end of the day. See also http://evergreenmtb.org/wiki/index.php?title=Trail:Tapeworm_-_Towers_of_Power.
