My first experience with a tax professional was Gabrielle Luoma. I got a groupon (pre-paid coupon) as a gift so I thought I'd let someone else do my taxes for once. My experience was terrible, my taxes were filed incorrectly, I contacted her office and was treated rudely by her staff (over email and the telephone). I had to file an amendment to my correct taxes and as of today (9 months later) the IRS still hasn't resolved the matter. Between calls with Luoma's office and the IRS I've spend many hours trying to deal the errors that resulted from her office disregarding my instruction to consider my fellowship income/earnings (I even handed Gabrielle the relevant info from the IRS at our initial meeting). His…read morerates are really reasonable, his office staff are friendly, and I always end up getting a much bigger refund than I had expected, plus he is very skilled at telling me what kinds of things might be flagged for auditing and preparing me for the coming year. I have two businesses and am a contract employee for another, so my finances are pretty complicated. Even so, David charged me less than anyone I used before, he keeps impeccable records, and he always keeps me in the loop. David was recommended by several of my friends after one of the "big name" firms lost all of my paperwork, and I'm glad I switched. I have to say that it's also great to know that my accountant is available throughout the year should something come up outside of a typical tax season. Perhaps best of all, though, is that David is just a friendly guy. He runs an interfaith meditation group and does a lot of service work, and it's nice to know that my accountant is a stand-up guy who's active in the Tucson community. One final note: last year I got my information to him too late, and he had to file an extension for me. Fast forward 6 months after taxes had been filed and we had issues with both states saying we didn't provide certain items. We ended up having to deal with each entity on our own and figuring it out - which took months. I would like to inform you that it can significantly impact your social security earnings, but not in a good way. For instance, in my case it will be reduced by 33 per cent. I strongly suggest learning about this before filing jointly. It would have saved us a tremendous amount of concern if we would have simply been advised of this beforehand. When I called their office to inquire about a possible recourse, I was simply told to make less money, which seemed a flippant answer to me. I called another office, but it is the 4th of July weekend. I do have an appointment on the 15th of July to personally speak to Lessard. I am very disappointed with their service, as this could have easily been avoided, if we had been informed beforehand. The person I spoke to appeared to have no empathy whatsoever for my personal position. It seemed that she was blaming me for being uninformed regarding IRMA, stating that the Social Security mails out information every year regarding this. Has anyone else failed to notice this? I encourage you to research the threshold for the earnings limit, prior to filing jointly. My personal position is that my husband's earnings far overshadow mine. Consequently, I will live on far less. Information is power. Again, I feel disappointed in this service, for failing to simply inform us about this significant repercussion of filing jointly. My husband's earnings should have been a red flag for a CPA. This is the first time I have ever posted a negative review, but the intent is to alert and inform others about IRMA, in case their accountant is not astute enough on this subject to advise them of the significant impact it can have on your income.
