An elite private school this is not. However the tuition is beyond reasonable, and a downright steal if you have more than 3 children in attendance. What applies to most if not all catholic schools also applies here. Uniforms required, fundraisers necessary, and catholic holy days and holidays the school is closed. Where this school truly stands out is with acceptance age. They will accept 2 year olds for a full day (8-2pm) as long as they will be three by December. Pre-k 3 is unique to this area, as daycares, not schools, usually service that age range. Also worth noting is the availability of the principal. Not only is she accessible, but intimately involved with most if not all school functions. hands down, great to see! The school itself is very clean, and has many activities available to its students. The staff is very friendly and appear to enjoy what they do. For those who ARE catholics, it is also nice knowing that your children will be learning their prayers and attending mass on occasion, while in school. I feel blessed to be able to leave my 2 year old in the hands of such a caring teacher and structured organization. So far so good...hope its this easy when my child enters college!

The administration and teachers are caring and extremely engaged in the community. A very supportive PA gouge which organize a lot of extra curricular activities. Every morning children are welcome with their first name, everybody knows each kid by name and give them the proper greetings. The small classes help also focusing on each child strength and 'need for help'. We really love it.

Our son is in 2nd grade and has been at Northside since age 2. All of his teacher have left…read morelasting impressions on our family and on our child- the small classes allow for hands on learning and personalized attention, and the collaborative work between classes means its never "too small." He loves integrated science and art- where the project based curriculum gets tied into all his other subjects. Last year their 1st grade class studied fire stations, and when construction workers blocked an exit in our home, he pointed it out to me as a safety hazard and we had the building fix it. His learning goes beyond the classroom and basic curriculum. Northside is teaching our son to be a lifelong learner and better citizen!

A significant issue is funding; the school appears to lack adequate support from the Department of Education, which forces students to cover expenses out of pocket. If you are an incoming freshman or a parent considering this school for your child, I would recommend it if your child is interested in working on a variety of aircraft. This is a great place for them to develop those skills.

Heard it got better. But during my days there, had to go to different high schools or malls to try to get girls. Study hard and potential to make shit ton of money out of this high school is definitely there. My Pakistani friend who stayed for 5th year to get extra license, went onto Vaughn college, and then use his Aviation degree + Aviation Powerplant/Airframe licenses along with his Vaughn College Engineering degree and is now making 80-90K a year for JetBlue. I regret not giving a shit back in HS. But I'm not exactly "I must make a lot of money" type of person. There's more to life than just money. But if you don't have this mindset, then study and I mean really study in this high school. Don't touch any of the Aviation girls. Each one goes through about 15 boyfriends a school year and you can get the herps just by even exchanging words with any of them. One of the best high schools in Queens in terms of prestige and the quality of the teachers (both academic and shop teachers). I still think about some of my favorite teachers from that school time to time, such as the late Mr. Colleti, Lazar, Serena, Marianna, etc.

Bard Queens is the second of its kind, a public high school with an accelerated program that takes 2 years to complete. The second two years are for college-level work (and, indeed, kids graduate after 4 years total with both a HS diploma and an A.A. degree from Bard College). Those 2 years of college credits can be transferred to some 4-year colleges, giving kids who want it a huge savings in both time and money. Kids have to take a placement exam (not the SHSAT) to qualify, but even if you do well, it's hard to say whether BHSEC Queens is for you. It's a small school, and sports are not a huge part of the culture here. It's in an unlovely part of LIC, close to Laguardia Community College and various subway lines but not much else. Writing is very important; you don't have to be a great writer at 14, but you should probably be open to improving in this area. Those are the caveats. The benefits of this school are enormous. The quality of the faculty is extraordinary: Most have PhD's, and they are devoted to teaching teenagers, constantly available to meet with them and provide extra help. The administration is terrific, and the office well run. The building is modern, well kept, and light-filled. The student body is quite diverse and active in a variety of clubs and activities. College counseling is just beginning for my child's class, but things seem pretty organized. The classes are small and most are seminar-style. Lots of discussion, lots of back-and-forth in the classroom, lots of writing (see above). Expectations are high; you're expected to work hard and be intellectually curious. If you want big lectures, multiple-choice tests, and anonymity--forget it. The BHSEC model has expanded to Newark, Cleveland, and New Orleans. Clearly, there's a demand for accelerated HS education. For the right kid, these schools will be life-changing. As with any educational choice, the key is to know yourself.

The principal and assistant principals are really extraordinary people. The teachers are also wonderful! Many fun programs are also offered from sports, dance, to 3d printing. (there are too many to mention) The debate team is the high light of this school. They won 2nd place in the country! Debate class is an excellent program that teaches the students a valuable life skill. Everyone has a sincere interest in the students and are always willing to help in any way they can. Any issues that arise they try to help . My child had a great experience at this school. They are focus in making great things happen at MS 50.

One is 8, the other is 5…read more Great stuff about this school I wrote about previously is still true -- small number of students for the 5 teachers on hand means the kids get a ton of attention that is exactly tailored to their own stage/age/interests and helps them move along a lot faster on the topics they are good at, and move well on the topics where they have difficulty -- there is a great mix of ages and styles around, and the mixed ages actually work together on stuff. Kids learn and see the good examples of kids 1-2 years older and that really motivates them to advance. "I want to do that!" At the same time, no stigma if you are a little behind on something and working with some other age groups -- Very little homework. It means the school time is working. Our kids are advancing quickly and doing a ton -- but teachers don't have to push off all the hard work to the parents in the evenings. There is tons of productive time in school since "classroom management" doesn't chew up half the time. What attracted me here, as a cognitive science PhD from Stanford myself, was the stellar intellectual grounding for the school its founder (Columbia PhD and former faculty) and multiple veteran and PhD educators on staff.

In the hallway on the last day of 2018-18 school (presentations day), some of the other dads and I compared notes and we found agreement in the following factors of QPS: 1. All our kids, without exception, love their school. Not like... love. Every dad in the group shared that our kids have never once tried to get out of going to school in the morning. Not a single time. Our kids love their school, tell us they love their school, and love going to school. This factor, if it were the only positive one, is extraordinary. 2. All our kids spend their school days learning "stuff", like kids in schools everywhere. However our QPS kids have all developed a strong ability to effortlessly synthesize all the stuff, and offer considered opinions to questions or topics that bridge multiple areas of knowledge. We agreed that our kids *think* first, and then *speak*. 3. The staff of QPS is uniformly excellent. From the principal to the PE coach, the TAs to the specialist learning consultants, the QPS teaching and learning team is literally amazing. QPS teachers enter into partnerships with our kids. Our kids feel validated in their individuality, and motivated to learn. My kid has been saying since his kindergarten year that he never wants to leave QPS. As a parent in today's NYC, I am deeply grateful that QPS offers my child such a safe, happy, inspiring place to grow into the confident and kind young man that he's clearly on track to become.
