The students of Brooklyn Tech all had this initial thought, "I hate Tech". Whether it was because…read moreof the teachers, elevators, schedules, or staff, while you attended Brooklyn Tech, you found some reason to dislike like the school. You have teachers constantly pushing you to do your best. There is no excuse for late homework or late assignments. Administrators will not take your if, ands, or buts. Sometimes you will have class in the basement then, the next period, gym on the 8th floor. The elevators will be packed, you will have to climb 9 flights of stairs. With the mind set of a high school student, you sometimes might feel unfairly retreated or wronged by deans or Brooklyn Tech staff. Trust me, as time goes on, you will realize, it's nothing personal. The school will seem like a human oven in the summer and winter. All of these elements may make you think that Brooklyn Tech isn't the school for you, or that you wouldn't want your child attending this institution. However, from the viewpoint of a Brooklyn Tech alumni, this school has sculpted me to the person I am today. You have educators who want to do more than make a semi decent salary. Teachers who want to help you succeed. I have gained more than just education within the sciences and engineering, I have gained pure knowledge. Knowledge that will carry with me where ever I go. Knowledge that is engraved in me, which makes me a better person, which gives me that advantage in the real world. As for the student body, it is an experience that you will never be able to encounter for the rest of your life. Attending Brooklyn Tech, you learn more about culture by your peers, than any course you can take in a higher education class. Not everyone who attends Brooklyn Tech has the same Ivy League ambition. You will meet some of the most brilliant pranksters, some of the most innovative individuals, and some of the most creative students. You will meet real people. You will find your own group of friends who will better define who you are as a person. I have met so many great and amazing people through my time at Brooklyn Tech. With that note, I have also met some who I would wish never to see again. There will always be something negative to say about any high school you attend. Your life is what you make it. The decisions you make will either make that path easier or harder. Brooklyn Tech is definitely one of those decisions in your life where you might think you've taken on a challenge that is more than you can chew. Trust me, this experience is worth it. It may not be easy, it may not be pretty, but you will leave carrying the pride of being a Brooklyn Tech Alumni.

It is administered and funded by Hunter College of the City University of New York (CUNY) and no tuition is charged. According to Hunter, its 1,200 "students represent the top one-quarter of 1% of students in New York City, based on test scores. I know that's true because I've got a lot of friends that have children that applied for entrance and were overlooked. The school history is interesting. Originally Hunter was established in 1869 as "The Female Normal and High School", a private school to prepare young women to become teachers. The original school was composed of an elementary and a high school. There's a long list of notable graduates if you want to look them up. I love the building because it is a historic Armory. I recommend you visit the photogenic structure. If you are fortunate enough to have your family member attend I recommend you take advantage of every activity and opportunity you have to visit this school. I particularly recommend participating in their extracurricular activities in any form offered. I've enjoyed a few activities throughout the years.

Last time I looked, my 9th grade math teacher was still soldiering on slinging the equations and one of my classmates is now continuing the tradition as a social studies teacher, following in the footsteps of Mr. Marienhoff (a great teacher and influence on many of us). Here are some facts about the school not often known outside the Hunter community. Every year, if you take the top 10% of 6th Grade kids in NYC (~2200-2500) that scored well on the 5th grade NYS ELA & math exams (what used to be called the city-wides), gave them the entrance exam and took the top 10% of those, you'd end up with the top 1%, which is roughly, a typical Hunter 7th grade class. Remember that this happens a full 2 years before they would take the Specialized High Schools exam (SHSAT). This gives Hunter the advantage of reaping the cream of the crop long before Stuyvesant, Bronx Science or Brooklyn Tech can get a crack at them. Over the first couple of years, some students will have personal, disciplinary or academic problems and will leave or be asked to leave, but their places are not filled by new students because they can only enter at the beginning of 7th grade. Those asked to leave go back and excel at their neighborhood schools. Like the other NYC specialized high schools, the education is tuition free and the best that the city can offer. Unlike those schools, you'll be staying for 6 years from grades 7-12. The Hunter College Campus Schools (including the Elementary School) is administered by Hunter College (CUNY) and not the NYC Dept of Education. This raises a whole load of other issues because Hunter is not subject to the Chancellor of the DOE nor receives funding like other NYC schools. Starting in 7th grade also gives students at Hunter the opportunity to finish their NYS Regents requirements by 10th or 11th grade and allows them to take more AP courses and to do an internship in their senior year. Completing both programs, the graduate receives both the Hunter and Regents diplomas. There has been a lot of press and allegations lately about the lack of diversity at Hunter and other Specialized schools that are groundless. If you can pass the test, you get in, end of story. Whether you received outside test prep or not, the bottom line is you were either prepared or not, no matter what your ethnic background. You better believe that if you attend Hunter, you will be going to college. With the Hunter name on your diploma, you stand a better than average chance to get into a top tier college or university. Hunter is known as the top feeder to the Ivy League and that is not a hollow statistic, but is proven every year. Among my class of 200, 10 students went to Cornell alone, with 4 to Harvard and others to Columbia, Princeton, UPenn, Yale, Brown and Dartmouth. We even had 3 going to MIT. Those are big percentages that is repeated year after year and that you will not find in any other school. I have very fond memories of my alma mater and appreciation for the place grows as you get older. So what I say to all the recent students and graduates that gripe about their experience at Hunter is that you'll be thankful for it in 10-20 years when all the bad experiences are in the past and you remember all the good things such as your life-long friends and the stellar education that you carry with you for the rest of your life. Here's an example of the work of some current students and a tour of the school. http://vimeo.com/62474345 And to make this a true Yelp review, what little cafeteria food we had was absolutely horrendous. You were better off going to any of the local delis (except the one we used to call the smelly deli). *Star Wars did come out about that time in ancient history and the records of us cutting class to go see it are lost in the mists of time. Han shot first!

The school is now located in a top notch state of the art (or at least it was brand new when I was there a decade ago) facility complete with it's own pool, weight room and a dancing studio!! (Yes, all you seniors take ballroom dancing - it is a great opportunity for a nerd to interact with another nerd of the opposite sex!) I made a lot of great friends at Stuy whom I still keep in touch with today. There is a certain sense of pride in Stuy alumni that just sticks with you - this is rare. In comparing it to other public schools, Stuy offers a plethora of learning experiences and chance to meet a diverse student pool of all racial and socioeconomic backgrounds - this is very helpful for youngsters starting out their own network. I promise you these great friends you make in your formative years will pay off. Heck I got a job recently by just thumbing through the Stuy Alumni directory. Stuy pride is strong. I will say that I do regret not taking up more extracurricular activities (of which there are MANY) and not studying as hard as I could have. Before Stuy I coasted by on just natural intelligence but when surrounded by shining nerds with just as much brain power, I lost a bit of my luster. Remember that a good hard work ethic is another amazing talent that can even outshine natural smarts. Now if you're on the fence on whether to go to Stuy, Hunter, Bronx or whatever local HS - I'd say measure the pros and cons in your situation. Hopefully the pros and cons I've listed here will help you on your decision. (and choose STUY!!)

My son is shy, a bit physically awkward, and dealing with diagnosed social anxiety. As you might imagine, he's a prime target for school bullying, which became so intense during his sophomore year of high school, that he couldn't bring himself to return. His confidence and self-esteem were shattered, as were we. At the end of that summer, days before the start of the new school year, we found an opening at York and anxiously paid a $10K retainer fee. Within 36 hours after writing that check, we learned that the chief bully, the ringleader of the harassment, was also transferring to York. An unbelievable and untenable coincidence. My son's therapist warned us that this would be a harmful situation and strongly advised us, in writing, to find another school. When we informed the administrators at York Prep about this last-minute development, and asked for the retainer to be refunded -- I remind you that the ink was barely dry on the check -- they said, "Sorry, we won't do that. You signed a retainer agreement and must forfeit your $10K". This was now just TWO DAYS before classes started! They also implied that we'd need a lawyer if we wanted to fight for a refund. The callousness York exhibited here, with no regard for my son's emotional health, and unfairly keeping our retainer after less-than two days, may be a cautionary tale for parents considering this school. On a positive note, we did find another school in the city that has provided academic excellence within a safe and nurturing community. My son is thriving, he's happy, and he's excelling as a student.

They have a program called Jump Start for students who need a little more help learning, such as students with dyslexia, and also a scholars program with a variety of interesting and unusual topics like American Cults and Cartography.
