I went looking for peanut butter pie and somehow ended up rediscovering FRUITCAKE. On Halloween…read moreEve. Because apparently my food adventures have no rules anymore.
I'd heard wonderful things about Beeman's Baked Goods in Carlisle, but their business-hour schedule had always made visiting a challenge. Then I got a craving. Not just any craving. A PEANUT BUTTER PIE craving. And considering approximately 63.8% of my personality is peanut butter, this situation required immediate attention!
I rearranged my Friday afternoon and arrived around 3:15pm. Parking was plentiful, and I was the only customer when I walked inside. I immediately GASPED. HOMEMADE BAKED GOOD HEAVEN!
Cakes, pies, whoopie pies, cookies and all kinds of delicious-looking treats! They also had milk, cheese, jams and other goodies. But I was a woman on a mission. PEANUT BUTTER PIE.
I quickly found it in the refrigerator and was thrilled to discover they sold individual servings. And by "individual serving," I mean ONE QUARTER OF AN ENTIRE PIE. Bless these people!
At $9.50, I had high expectations. I briefly considered buying an entire pie, but Responsible Adult Me prevailed. Quarter pie it was!
With my precious peanut butter cargo secured, I wandered around contemplating a second treat. Chocolate cake with peanut butter icing? Chocolate peanut butter whoopie pie?
And then something unexpected happened.
FRUITCAKE.
There it was, sitting near the window, practically GLISTENING in the afternoon sunshine. I hadn't eaten fruitcake in probably 20 years because nobody I know likes it. But I was spending Friday evening on my own, and suddenly I NEEDED fruitcake.
FRUITCAKE?! Who even AM I?!
Beeman's sells three sizes, so I grabbed the smallest for $5.50. Fifteen dollars later, I happily trotted out to my car with two desserts and absolutely no regrets.
After dinner, it was time for the main event.
THE PEANUT BUTTER PIE.
I opened the container and immediately smelled peanut butter. STRONG peanut butter. Excellent sign! Then I took a bite.
OH. MY. This may genuinely be one of the best peanut butter pies I've ever eaten. Rich, dense, perfectly sweet and absolutely PACKED with peanut butter flavor. None of that light, fluffy, vaguely peanut-butter-flavored nonsense. This was SERIOUS peanut butter pie!
The crushed peanut butter cups on top were a fantastic finishing touch. Whatever brand they're using, I wholeheartedly approve.
Remember those high expectations at $9.50? EXCEEDED. I'd have happily paid two or three times that amount. I've already decided I want one for my birthday in a few months. Future Birthday Me has officially made her dessert selection!
Next came the fruitcake. I cautiously unwrapped my $5.50 impulse purchase, cut a test slice and took a bite.
WELL, DANG! Apparently I've been depriving myself of fruitcake for TWENTY YEARS FOR NO GOOD REASON!
Absolutely packed with walnuts and fruit, with just enough moist, flavorful cake to hold everything together. Less cake, more STUFF. Exactly how fruitcake should be!
And who says fruitcake is just for Christmas? It was Halloween Eve, and I was living my best fruitcake life!
I'm SO glad I finally made the trip. Their limited hours might prevent me from becoming a regular, but I'll absolutely be back for more peanut butter pie, fruitcake and eventually those tempting whoopie pies and cakes.
PRO TIP: Check their hours before visiting! They're open Tuesday through Friday, 8am to 4pm, and Saturday, 8am to 2pm. And don't overlook those enormous individual pie servings!
If you appreciate substantial, homemade baked goods, Beeman's is worth the trip. Nothing light or skimpy here. Just rich, dense, generously portioned deliciousness.
As for me? I've found my birthday dessert AND rekindled a relationship with fruitcake.
