Total crap ! Steak ranchero was tough and sauce was watery with zero flavor other than the onions. Didnt recieve my grilled jalapeño I ordered and didnt recieve my guacamole that was supposed to come with the meal. Plus I ordered extra. They gave me a very small amount of guacamole when it did come and it was horrible. Looked like glorified taco bell. The enchiladas were nasty and tasteless. Worst mexican food ive had in a long time. Dont know why there are so many cars in parking lot all the time. Thats why I stopped in. Not worth the time to stop here. We had a group of about 16 and we were greeted well and our drinks came out pretty quickly. Well about 45 minutes later we still haven't ordered our food and our waitress could not be found. Had to get up and tell another waitress we haven't ordered our food yet. Some other groups of 8 had come in after we did and they ate and were gone before we ordered our food. Finally got our food after asking for it a few times. I asked our waitress for a discount since we had to wait for so long. She wouldn't give a discount and she said it took longer because we ordered drinks. I spoke with the manager about a discount and she would not give a discount because it was a busy day. The service is ok. Our waitress tried hard to keep our chips and tea full, but that's the nicest thing I can say. I ordered Enchiladas a La Mexicana. Usually when I order Enchiladas I expect them to be medium to large with some meat in them. I got two enchiladas, smothered in melted American cheese, that were the size of taquitos with no filling what so ever. Basically two small tortilla shells wrapped and smashed flat. The cheap refried beans were seemingly out of a can and the rice was tasteless. The "salad" consisted of wilted shredded lettuce, with some guacamole and a thin tomato slice. Our chips were of low quality and the salsa was bland and tasteless. I was hungry and unexcited to finish eating. It wasn't greasy though. I dislike giving restaurants a bad review, but I gotta be honest and say I'm never coming back here. Seriously disappointed. I guess they can't get good ingredients in Gonzales or maybe the economy is squeezing the restaurant hard and they have to make concessions, but it's bad news either way :-( read more

How do you open a restaurant and mess up this badly. This was THE worst Mexican restaurant I've ever been to. I never leave reviews, but I was genuinely so disappointed with everything I decided to make this a warning. When we got our drinks we were all off put by the odd taste. It was almost as if someone had crushed a stalagmite and shoved it down my throat, using my Coke as a chaser. We hoped the food would come out good to make up for it, but seeing the tamales actually ruined my day. I was given the measliest of tamales I had ever seen. Happened by and decided to give it a shot for breakfast. The outside is kinda run down but in my experiences, that generally means that the restaurant has been there for a while because they serve great food. I was not disappointed. Just a simple breakfast taco was gonna be my order but reading the menu, they had "regular" and "Mr. Taco". I asked the waitress why the difference was (besides the price) and she said it's just bigger. I told her she peaked my interest so I ordered a regular and a Mr. Taco. My wife and I were told this was the best Mexican food restaurant in town and we met some folks there for an initial tryout. The food wasn't bad and the service was acceptable. A week or so later, we went back for a second visit and the food was not very good and the service, or lack of it, was atrocious. The waitress only came back to the table once after taking our order and not one server would make eye contact. We eventually flagged down a server and asked for drink refills and eventually got them. We simultaneously asked for additional chips and salsa, which wasn't brought. There were two other times we spoke to servers as they went by, asking for chips and salsa, which never came. After finishing our meals, we sat patiently for at least the minutes for a check, before shouting at a server at the cash register that we would like our check. We paid and left and I don't plan to go there again; if this was the best Mexican restaurant in town, I certainly don't plan on eating Mexican food again in Gonzales. read more

*UPDATE: No issues with stolen credit card information with my visit.* Came here with the in-laws for dinner on a Saturday. It's your typical roadside cafe where you seat yourself. The dining area was clean and service was quick. We had piping hot food in front of us within 5 minutes of ordering. The fajita meat was a bit smaller than I normally prefer, but the flavor and the portion size made up for this. Plenty of guac and fresh veggies come with the meat and additional tortillas are a simple request away. The kids portions are very large and that's not a bad thing if you do leftovers. I am a bit concerned about other reviews concerning stolen credit card information and will watch my account very closely after this evening's transaction, hence the missing star. I will update my review later on. No alcohol this trip, but my in-laws say the margaritas are served in a "bowl" sized glass. read more

Nice spot. Was recommended to us by the curator over at the museum. We finished our "Come and Take It" cannon tour by dining at Mr. Taco... Which based on the name, we almost passed on... But the food did not let us down and we got to try something new... A michelada. Now maybe the Shiner Bock was a bit to heavy to make this drink work, and while interesting, neither my brother nor me liked it. Oh sure we finished it, but we'll drink damn near anything. We did need another unadulterated Shiner though. All our plates were good and service (thanks Sandra) was fantastic. If I'm ever back in Gonzales, I'd eat here again. Mr. Taco is our family's "regular" spot in town. The wait staff recognizes us now, and are always very polite. We love the food. Our five kids adore the chicken strips and grilled cheese sandwich off the kid's menu. I have had a little bit of everything. We're all fans of the breakfast tacos. Great chips and salsa. The salsa is always fresh, so its spiciness depends on who made the latest batch. Recommend for a casual, low-key, local experience. read more

While the food was good, there were several glaring problems that kept me from rating this place any higher. First of all, this is the only Mexican restaurant that charges $2.29 if you want an extra bowl of chips. Every other place would always refill the chips at no charge. Not here. Also, the chips that we were served were not even homemade, they were store bought! The next problem area was the staff. Once we were seated, it took way to long for anyone to come and give us a menu and to take out drink order. Yes, there were other customers, but when I saw 5 staff members just standing around, it is very unacceptable. Next, it took way too long to get out food. For something as simple as a taco plate and a quesadilla, the wait should not be long. I will not be going back here as long as the customer service is this bad and as long as they charge for chips! I was asked by mt wife to try it one more time. We went to the drive throughout for breakfast. The lady never opened the window. She was standing there but never said anything. We drove away and went to Matamoras Taco Hut. Way better and a friendlier staff! The time that I got the Cowboy Special from Mr Taco, it was supposed to have ham in it. Well, there was ham. It was a big solid piece, not the usual diced pieces. Who uses a solid piece? This place needs a major overhaul that starts with basic cooking techniques and hours of customer service training. Came in this afternoon after some very bad experiences at a couple restaurants. My mom recommended this one. We came in during a shift change. At first the waitress was standoffish but after we killed her with kindness and smiles and cute smiles from kids, she lightened up. Food was great and the atmosphere was awesome. This is your standard Tex-Mex place. Waitstaff is friendly. The prices are reasonable, but SOME of the food leaves much to be desired. The tacos are bland, the chicken fried steak is bland, too. No real flavor. The most exciting thing on my plate was the salad that came with two little packets of dressing. The fries were hot, but the ketchup tasted better than the fries. I left full, but not necessarily satisfied. My husband ordered the low carb breakfast platter with carne guisada. He said it was really good. My mother ordered the chicken tender platter and she and my daughter both thought it was good. My father ordered the chalupa plate and he ate it all up. This place is ok. What is the worst is customer service. The waitress we got she was running like chicken with the head cut off. I mean she only have like 2 tables. Anyway, we were patient for 10 minutes without nobody coming to give you menus or take our drink order. Then I asked to another server if she can bring us menus and she apologized and said of course and brought the menus. After that our server came 5 minutes later and she didn't even ask us how we were doing. She was yelling drink? drink? She got an attitude when it was not our fault that she couldn't handle 2 TABLES?!! My brother asked for a coffee and she respond that she can only have 2 coffees per table? My sister and brother-in-law ordered coffee. She took another 8 minutes to get out drinks and bring chips and salsa. Then I told her that we were ready to order and then she said ok with a terrible attitude. That's when I told her to stop her attitude and she just crossed her arms and gave me that face like rolling her eyes. Then I said I need to talk to the manager she said she was the manager??? Found this place passing through town. It was a little awkward at first because the entrance has no hostess to greet and seat you. We walked into the dining room with other customers eating and finally saw a waitress and she told us to sit wherever we wanted. So if you go eat here Seat Yourself! Salsa is great a little kick, the chips are definitely not homemade tortilla chips but they were fine. Ordered drinks and I have to say the sweet tea was one of the best teas I've drank, not too sweet or bland. Ordered queso, it was ok too. I added a little salsa just for the kick. My husband ordered chicken fried steak (I know in a Mexican restaurant) anyhow it was pretty big. The plate in general was good size, had toast, French fries, lettuce and tomato salad and the steak with gravy. He did say the meat was a little bland but was good with the gravy. I ordered chicken caldo, huge bowl. It was sided with rice, an order of tortillas and lime. The price is very reasonable and plates are full of food. read more
