Best Butter chicken in New Zealand, hands down. Decent prices. This is one of my top choices when I have the money. Highly recommended.

There were several people waiting at the door for take away food for quite awhile. It seems like the 7pm rush really backed up the kitchen and we didn't see much food coming out for awhile. We were seated and left alone for atleast 20-25 minutes until we were able to order. Then another 30 minutes before food showed up, without much explanation from the hostesses. Service seems really hands off and something that could be improved. For dinner, we did a chicken tikka masala and beef madras with Hot level spicy and it was actually really hot; what I wanted! Almost too spicy in fact, but I could handle it. I preferred the madras; the food was well flavored. You can pay at the front, which we did pretty quick after we finished our food. We were still disappointed in the service and lack of communication about what was going on with the food.

Came here on a Friday night for dinner where I guess they had a special and entrees were $14. It's a real shame, the food was pretty tasty but the wait times and service were actually really horrible. I would have given 2 stars but I did like the dishes we ordered. Once we got there, we surprisingly got seated immediately, but that was all the prompt service we received. I think after about 20 min or so, they asked what we wanted to drink and we started off with some wine. Then after another 20 or so minutes, I try to flag down a waitress and ask her if we could order. She replies yes then scurries off......20 more minutes go by and the waitress seems to be taking the orders of everyone around us and finally she does take our order. We start off with samosas, papadams and for our entrees we ordered the chicken tikka masala and the beef madras. We asked for the Hot spicy level and it came out spicy! Maybe a little too spicy so I ask a waitress for some yogurt. But I never see the yogurt, I'm pretty much done with my dinner and have no more water at this point and just want to get out of there. It was annoying because yes the restaurant was busy when we got there but as we waited the place was starting to clear out and I literally saw 3 waitresses just going around to each empty table putting plates down and folding napkins...no one else was coming in and we actually needed some service....sooo please don't ignore me? Maybe I should do as the locals do next time and just order take out!

The second visit to Sagar in Birkenhead, was a takeout meal, as I wanted to sample if they could out do our fave village curry restaurant. I ordered Butter Chicken, and Lamb Rogan Josh, and ofcourse poppadoms, and garlic naan to accompany. The dishes were both aromatic and spicy with flavour however seemed to lack the tidy slices of meat we always had from our other local. Instead I had large chunks of meat, which kind of put me off eating the meals. The Garlic Naan was huge! When I say massive I am not exaggerating at all. I could not tell whether we were just over served in size or if this was the norm. I just think that they did very well with the spices and amount of food; however I think they could better in presentation and slices of meat.

In fact, when our flat has an Indian night we now have to visit two Indian restaurant to pick up food as two flatmates love Sagar and two prefer another place. To be honest we don't venture much past the classic kiwi butter chicken on most occasions, but I have tried the spinach and cheese based, Palak Paneer, which is a great option for vegetarians. Don't let the interior fool you, this place is surprisingly good!
