Mr. Dunderbacks made me forget momentarily that I was in America and not living my best life in Germany! We ordered the Oktoberfest and one of their Banana Beers. The banana was delicious to me, however it wasn't everyone's cup of tea, the Oktoberfest suited everyone's taste. The Oktoberfest. We ordered the JÄGERSCHNITZEL with Veal with the Pancakes and Pierogies. Our two big appetizers are the Onions Rings and Pomme Fries. All delicious. I could've ate two of those schnitzels all on my own. The service was excellent. Our server was attentive, super friendly- down to earth guy. The interior also blew me away with their decked out supply of German snacks, deli, beer, chocolate, random grocery assortment, all the way down to the furniture and how the employees dress; you feel like your legit in Germany. On the weekends they also have live performances, unfortunately we got there too late but from what I've heard from others that has been, it's a lively great time. The atmosphere is welcoming and the decor is classic German kitsch. However, my visit to the deli was disappointing. I had such high hopes for this place. :( The selection is very limited and perhaps I missed something (entirely possible), but I did not see a price list for the deli case. We did find a unique assortment of other German products- some we haven't seen in many years. The restaurant portion was quite busy and the customers looked happy. We were flooded with nostalgia and left in hopes of dining in on a less-busy day. I ordered two meats, including the German bologna. During the drive home, my family and I noticed a terrible odor-- the kind where we started pointing fingers at one another. We never suspected that the package from the deli was the source. When we opened it at home, a nauseatingly funky, ammonia-type smell came from the German bologna. While the liverwurst smelled okay, I could not trust it after the bologna and decided against keeping it. Wasted time and money. Dang! The staff is super nice and that was truly a plus. Stopped by on a Saturday night and surprised we got in right away. Normally this place is packed. Service was friendly and quick and our schnitzel came out quickly. I had the Zigeuner schnitzel. It had a spicy white sauce with peppers and onions. It had a touch of heat but not too spicy. It was very good. I had spaetzle and warm German potato salad as my sides. The warm potato salad was a nice blend of sour and savory with some bacon. That sauce was perfect to dunk my spaetzle in as well!! Others had jaeger schnitzel and sour cream schnitzel. Also as big as the plate with 2 sides. Hot and delicious. Atmosphere is nice. Only downside is the price of all the extras they have. They have gotten pretty overpriced over the years. And the accordion player was a great added touch. But the food.. it's so so good! Transport to Germany! This place blew my expectations out of the water. There are 3 separate rooms and bar areas. The interior decor is spot-on. They have kegs lining the entry. There is an assortment of German treats you can buy to take home. We enjoyed the potato pancakes and pretzel with cheese and mustard. The pork jagerschnitzel was so crispy and juicy, with a perfect gravy over top. The warm German potato salad on the side was delightful with a strong vinegar flavor. There is celebrated history for my family aligning with German culture as my oldest daughter was born in Bavarian Germany. So naturally, we try our best to find the local German cuisine and festivities everywhere that we travel and live. Luckily for us, we discovered Mr. Dunderbak's, which wasn't incredibly too far from Lutz. We came mid-afternoon on a Sunday and the parking lot was full - fortunately, we were able to find some spots without waiting too long. As it was the end of September, Mr. Dunderbak's also hosted some Oktoberfest observations and festivities. This meant a bit of a wait for our family of four to be seated inside, but it was worth it! As you walk up to the restaurant, you are greeted with the unique Bavarian-esque calligraphy of its name in bold, golden hue. There was still outdoor seating available when we went in the form of tables and benches that situated in the parking spaces in front of the venue. Approaching the entrance, you will encounter a set of oaken doors that set the stage for your welcome. The doors then open up to a short corridor that which is adorned with wall hangings and lined with cases of beer along its walls, while the incandescent lighting contribute to the tone and ambiance of the restaurant before opening up to the immersive dining space. Immediately, we were reminded of our time spent living in Germany, as well as our travels to Austria. The noise-level was definitely suited for the space and environment that you find at a Biergarten. While the lighting was somewhat dim, the atmosphere was lively and vibrant which didn't rely on the light musical faire playing in the backdrop. There was a playful arrangement of seating areas - from biergarten benches and tables to formal tables with even a dining table under a gazebo centered in the dining space - making Mr. Dunderbak's even more festive. Flanking either side of the main dining space were two smaller rooms, with a full bar. What makes Mr. Dunderbak's even more unique is the mini-store that lines around the main dining space, along with a fully operational deli, offering an assortment of German meats/sausages and groceries (comparable to the Cracker Barrel concept, but better and without the negative media). As for the food, we definitely were able to satisfy our German-cuisine cravings. The menu was rather robust offering a variety of schnitzels and wursts (yes, they have currywurst), while offering a unique American flare with their other menu items. While I did not get any beer to accompany my meal, my wife ordered a Radler - and a grapefruit one at that - which arguably made her day. The jagerschnitzel, sauerkraut, and potato salad were solid, while the nurnberger (wursts) and spatzle were a hit with my kids. Overall, we had a great experience at Mr. Dunderbak's and will definitely be back again. This is a great place to go with groups and to simply enjoy company! Prost! read more

I tried the beer cheese soup, Zig schnitzel with the "spicy" sauce (imo it's not really spicy... maybe "white ppl spicy"), beer, and a "framboise" drink that tasted exactly like raspberries (framboise means raspberry in French). Definitely some of the best German food around! Love that it is merging of restaurant, bar, and market. Truly the best of all worlds. The portion sizes are excellent. I got the German Pork Schnitzel and it was fantastic! It covered the whole plate. Light and crispy, yet tender on the inside, it pairs perfectly with the many German beers they have on tap. The side dishes of braised red cabbage and spaetzle was the perfect side dish pairing. The tartness of the cabbage cut through the richness of the pork while the delicious spaetzle was the perfect textural contrast to the pork. Overall, excellent place I would come back to! The food was really good. The inside of the space is well decorated and feels like you've entirely transformed across the globe to eat German food. The service is really fast. They're super attentive and if it does feel like the service is a little slow be super patient because there is only a handful of people working there. The menu is super cool because it's German and English together. My friends and I all came and we sat at their long tables, it didn't feel cramped, but it felt very lively. There is an accordion player playing live music throughout the night and also they're doing a Oktoberfest raffle so the attendance inside felt very high as everybody is enjoying their beers and their schnitzels. read more

We came for Valentine's Day and while it was crowded we got a seat right away. Friendly service, the lady who took us to our table had a dirndl on, and a man played music on the Accordion in the middle of the room. I saw all the German products and treats right away and we bought a bunch of things, Rotkohl, Goldsaft, chocolate, German Wafers, Kalter Hund, a classic. We got the Schweinshaxe, Schnitzel and Leberkaese with sides: Rotkohl, potatoes, vegetable soup, dumplings, salad. My husband had a beer. The food was good, definitely got my cravings for a German food filled. I would have given 5 Stars but given that I grew up on German food there are a few things that could be a little more "authentic" or maybe the way it was made in our home, local restaurants around us or even when traveling through Germany have a different taste/flavor. I know it's sometimes hard to get food from your home country in a different country, as types of ingredients available can vary. But all together it a good and we will definitely be back. read more

Amazing. Such a treat to discover that Mr Dunderbak's survives after we thought they were gone. This is a restaurant with a personality. We didn't have a single thing that we didn't like here. A liter of Haufbrau Dunkel, a plate of sausages with red cabbage, followed by house made Black Forest cake, they are still 109% on their game. If you have an inkling of liking German food, this is your place. On top of that the market spread around is amazing to browse. What a gem! I went to the old one at University Mall (I'm aging myself!) and was curious to see what had changed. Nothing! Which is great. I had a wonderful soup and sandwich special. The soup was pickle and pork which sounds weird but it was SO good. Chicken sandwich in pumpernickel was yummy too. Ya Ta the server was wonderful. Atmosphere reminded me of my time in Germany---lots of Polkas playing. Lots of specialty wines, beers and foods from Germany here too. Very fun place to go for a little German culture. My son wanted schnitzel. Mr. Dunderbak's has a lot of schnitzel on their menu! They also had a kid's menu for my daughter. We arrived early-ish on a Saturday, but there was already a waiting list We put our name down, and we sat at an outdoor table. Quickly, a server was there to take our drink orders. My kids got Abita root beer on tap, I had a nice grapefruit shandy. The food is pretty good. My son got the Holstein schnitzel (schnitzel with fried eggs on top) with sauerkraut and pickles. We shared an order of the pommes frites. My daughter got the schnitzel strips on the appetizer menu (there's no schnitzel on the kid's menu, just hot dog or chicken tenders or PB&J). I got a sausage plate with sauerkraut and spaetzle. The spaetzle was the perfect texture. It was bland on its own but good with the mushroom gravy. The sausage was also bland to me, wish there was mustard on the table, but the gravy helped. We were seated at a small table right by the accordion player. My son was delighted. Wow. Just wow is about all I can say. We drove 10 miles from where we were working and this place did not disappoint. Located in a strip mall so plenty of parking. Really not that impressive from street but then you walk in and bam there is beer glorious beer lining the entrance. There is a meat counter and a German food store area. There are two amazing bars. We set at the main and ordered. I had my usual pork jagersnishel with red cabbage and sour kraut. The red cabbage was delicious. It was awesome and the meat was delicious. The sour kraut was good also but not over the top like the cabbage. No I did not have a beer as it was a work lunch but I may have drooled over the selection. We set at the bar and bartender was on but not overly friendly but we may have wigged him out drooling over the beer selection and then not ordering one or two. Excellent German with a few minor flaws. As you walk in, the restaurant looks quite a bit like a German bier hall. The larger communal tables are right in the middle, twobars, and seating in the bar and another room. The German music adds to the ambiance. We were seated quickly and had biers in hand within a minute. The bier is traditional German. Mr. Dunderbak's has some of their own brews to try, which were decent (try Barriehaus for even better lagers). I had the Rahm Schnitzel with spaetzle (jaeger gravy) and sauerkraut. The veil was quite good. The main downside was the sauce had broken and had a bit of a strange texture (see picture). I also think the veal is deep fried instead of pan fried, based on the flavor, but the sauce was able to cover up that taste. The spaetzle was nice and adding the jaeger gravy just added to the experience. Sauerkraut fairly typical of German restaurants. The Black Forest Cake was nice, although I did have a better one at Hildegard's in Huntsville, AL (which scored lower on the schnitzel). As it was father's day, they also gave each of a beer to take with us. A nice capper to a great evening. read more

After spending a whole day at Adventure Island, we were pretty hungry and feeling like having some hearty food. Mr. Dunderbak's came up as an option so we decided to check it out. Here are my ratings: Quality of drinks and food: good. I tried the Zigeuner Schnitzel that came with peppers, onions, and a sweet red paprika sauce. My sides were German potatoes and red cabbage. I frankly thought that the sauce was a little too overpowering and hid the taste of schnitzel a little bit. However, adding sautéed onions and peppers was an excellent idea. The sides were some of the best that I have ever tasted. The Dunkel was also delicious but I wish they also offered boots. Décor: pretty neat. The place feels partly a store and partly a restaurant. There are some fake looking Bavarian decorations glued to the wall but overall it made the place feel very cozy. They just need to have some live German polka music players as the music being played on the speakers gets repetitive after a while. Cleanliness: good. The tables were being constantly cleaned. Service: okay. Our server kept checking on us a little too frequently and it turned out that we were the last customers of his shift (as pointed out by him). He was obviously looking to be done with the day and go home which is understandable but I think that it unnecessarily put pressure on us to finish ordering and pay our check. A German restaurant experience is supposed to be nice and relaxing instead of hurried up. I think it would be better if the restaurant does what many others do which is to pass the waitstaff duty to someone on the next shift if it's getting too close to the original server's shift end time. Price: medium. The schnitzel was around $19 and the large beers were around $14. If you're in the mood for some good German food with matching beers then checkout Mr. Dunderbak's. read more

Something I'd like to note here, because I see it as a common complaint: This place gets very busy-- even parking, so keep that in mind. And when it gets busy you may have to wait for your server. I suggest that this is the sort of place you'll want to come to when you have plenty of time to sit and enjoy your meal & beverages. Also, if you are not a social person, this place will not be for you. The open seating and long tables are inherently designed to encourage interaction. Everything I've tried there (which is a lot since I've been going for so long lol) is delicious, made fresh and cooked to complete and utter perfection. The beer options are insane (in the best way possible) and the staff is always providing great service. My go to options are definitely the kartoffelpuffers (potato pancakes that are made fresh and literally heaven on a plate), the pierogis, and the andouille sausage or Bavarian bratwurst with curry sauce. The apple strudel is also great and I love checking out their little market while I'm there- I always walk out with delicious German treats. This place came highly recommended by a good friend who frequented it many times during his days of living in Tampa. Walking into Mr. Dunderbak's is like being transported directly into a Hamburg pub. As it was my first time here, I had to try to the traditional pork schnitzel "wiener art." It was sliced thin and hand-pounded out to make it perfectly golden brown fried. The atmosphere inside was truly all-encompassing, with German music playing and German horse racing airing on the TVs above the bar. Warning: I haven't tried real German food nor know what they are called in German. Nice ethnic place to have dinner. I came here because of the mouth watering pictures from other Yelp reviews. I didn't read all the captions which I think I will next time cause I really wanted to try the pork shank(?) but that is only served on Friday and Saturday. My husband was deployed to Germany at one point of his life and it brought back good memories when he ate the food. We ordered the soft pretzel with beer cheese and the potato pancakes with sour cream and apple sauce(?) for appetizers. My husband got the pork schnitzel with some sort or gravy and my daughter got the kids hot dog. Sides were fries and pickle spears. Ratings: Pretzel with cheese 10/10. The pretzel was soft and perfect and the cheese dip was amazing. I literally ate everything dipped in that cheese cause the serving is a lot. I think it was super cheap too like $6 or so. Potato and onion pancakes. 7/10. It kind of tasted like a homemade hash brown that was deep fried extra crunchy. Nothing special to remember about it. It did come with 4 pieces and we ended up eating only 3 of them. My husband loved it with the apples. Schnitzel 7/10. It was like thin slice of cutlet. It was long, longer than the bun which my daughter thought was interesting since she only knew of the bun being longer than the dog. It had really good flavor and the casing was crisp. I enjoyed the bite I took a lot. For the drinks we had sweet tea and their draft root beer. Interesting what draft root beer really is, it is kegged(?) warm root beer poured over ice. I wasn't a fan since it wasn't carbonated enough or at all for me but the flavor was good. My husband loved it and drank all of it. Glad we decided to come in to try it.
