I had a shandy since I was the driver, and my dinner companion had a couple of the in house beers. The food is also wonderful. From the spatzel mit kase, to the weisswurst, to the schnitzel, everything was absolutely lovely and very filling. You won't leave hungry. Excellent place for drinks and food! We need to talk about Mr. Dunderbak's because how did I never know there was a German beer hall in Tampa? When you step inside it's like you've been transported to Germany - I loved the decorations. Make sure you look up, down and all around in here! The service was great, though we sat at the bar and the tables were BUSY on a Sunday afternoon during a Bucs game. There aren't tons of TVs in here but enough to at least be able to see the game from anywhere in the dining room. Let's talk about the food.. omg. The menu is expansive ... we tried as much as we could like Pierogis, warm pasta salad, spaetzel, jagerschinitzel, and bratwurst. By far the star of the show was the Black Forest Cake for desert. Came here past Sunday for my Mothers birthday. I gotta say this place is a gem hidden in Collage town. We arrived during a high customer traffic. It was so packed! Everybody that walked by us on way out kept hyping the business. They got a bunch of different kegs at market prices. I checked the competition and its 1 to 1 vs other liquor heavy stores. It has wine shelves also in the same market values which puts them in a cozy spot to just drop in n buy booze on the go. Place has a built in market n store. It is a bit cramp but it can be navigated with caution. We waited about 25 minutes just as they said. Seating is divided by round tables and the big wooden beer hall style wooden benches. They got a mini game where you buy certain things off the menu n you qualify to a scratch off with a number you just walk over to the gift area n pick what you won. Its like arcade style gifts but german toys n beer cozy. Huge selections of german n northern European snacks and grocery items all in market prices. Menu is pretty big, has many combinations and side orders. They got one of the biggest chanks plate i ever seen. I been to 4 other german places and hands down this is the best one. Loud german music playing, plenty of tvs for sports, has a sport bar integrated into the place with its own mega tvs and bar. There is a whole other bar adjacent to it, so single n duos will always find a place to sit. I noticed another room with more seating area probably a party zone or less noise area. They also have outside seating. Food was phenomenal! If you go during the high traffic times, it will take about 30+ minutes to see your food but it is worth the wait. Staff were friendly n welcoming. Food portion were pretty big too. No way i could eat all my food which is great to take home. Went with the snitzel hawaii. It had two pineaples and cherries on top of the nicely cured ham and cheese and then the pan fried pork. Mom got the chank it was a massive cut with beer reduction sauce that was just heavenly. My sides were the sauerkraut and the two potato dumplings. If you go to the university of Tampa or leaving the themepark? Do yourself a favor n drop by this restaurant. It is great place. I noticed that after 8pm the crowd calmed down and it was more manageable. If you show up to lunch or dinner hours it will be heavily crowded. But do able. Large groups do tale time, be patient and enjoy the experience. My only biggie was that the seat was taring me up. Staff was kind enough to bring extra seat so i could be more comfortable. Large selection of german beer made me forget the pain. Next tome ill bring a butt pillow. If they had pillows for sale i would had bought one. Mr. Dunderbacks made me forget momentarily that I was in America and not living my best life in Germany! We ordered the Oktoberfest and one of their Banana Beers. The banana was delicious to me, however it wasn't everyone's cup of tea, the Oktoberfest suited everyone's taste. The Oktoberfest. We ordered the JÄGERSCHNITZEL with Veal with the Pancakes and Pierogies. Our two big appetizers are the Onions Rings and Pomme Fries. All delicious. I could've ate two of those schnitzels all on my own. The service was excellent. Our server was attentive, super friendly- down to earth guy. The interior also blew me away with their decked out supply of German snacks, deli, beer, chocolate, random grocery assortment, all the way down to the furniture and how the employees dress; you feel like your legit in Germany. On the weekends they also have live performances, unfortunately we got there too late but from what I've heard from others that has been, it's a lively great time. Stopped by on a Saturday night and surprised we got in right away. Normally this place is packed. Service was friendly and quick and our schnitzel came out quickly. I had the Zigeuner schnitzel. It had a spicy white sauce with peppers and onions. It had a touch of heat but not too spicy. It was very good. I had spaetzle and warm German potato salad as my sides. The warm potato salad was a nice blend of sour and savory with some bacon. That sauce was perfect to dunk my spaetzle in as well!! Others had jaeger schnitzel and sour cream schnitzel. Also as big as the plate with 2 sides. Hot and delicious. Atmosphere is nice. Only downside is the price of all the extras they have. They have gotten pretty overpriced over the years. This was my first time trying German food, and Mr. Dunderbak's was a great introduction. I ordered the Jägerschnitzel with veal, which is a herb-breaded Wiener schnitzel topped with a rich hunter gravy. The veal was incredibly tender, and the gravy was packed with flavor. It was a satisfying entrée that came with two sides. For my sides, I chose the pierogies and spätzle. The pierogies were honestly my favorite part of the meal. They were fluffy, cheesy, and generously filled. So delicious. I could have eaten a whole plate of just those. The spätzle was soft and well prepared, but compared to everything else, I found it a little boring. The restaurant itself is very cute and has a lot of character. I loved browsing the selection of German snacks, candy, and other imported items available for purchase. It added to the overall experience and made the place feel unique. While I'm not that familiar with German food, I thought this was a pretty good restaurant. And the accordion player was a great added touch. But the food.. it's so so good! This is our 2nd time visiting and we had hoped for a great experience like the first time! It was pretty good, but one thing was such a fail that it knocked me down. While not October, this place gets pretty packed and is staffed to handle it. While the odd hostess with uncomfortable boobs popping out in your face (trust me, nooo ty) was too much IMO, I was glad to see (by the rest of the staff) that we weren't somehow transported to a German hooters. The star was our bar waiter who was attentive and hustling the whole night. We appreciated how he didn't forget us and kept an eye on the whole bar section too. Now to the food. We enjoyed most all the food however there was some real wins and real losses. The plain pork schnitzel (Weiner Art) was amazing. Huge, perfectly breaded, nice seasoning, I couldn't have been happier! But the Zigeuner pork schnitzel (with white sauce) was disappointing. The sauce veggie concoction kinda took away from it IMO and left you overwhelmed by the topping versus enjoying the actual pork itself. The pomme frittes (their version of French fries) were just sliced potatoes that seem underdone, limpy and not seasoned enough. The side of mash potatoes (they call it Kartofelle purée) is just homemade mash potatoes with skins. It was lacking flavor as well. The sides we were happy with were the spiced haus made applesauce (sooo good) and the sauerkraut (slightly above average). However the biggest fail and personal disappointment to me was their beer cheese soup. While in the past the dish was absolutely amazing (I could have downed 2 bowls of their soup back then), today I had only a few bites -it wasn't worth it. Our waiter said we weren't the first to notice the change in recipe and be put off by it. This version is homemade (hmm) while the previous version was shipped in. Why oh why would they change a GREAT thing?!! Beer cheese soup is such a staple in German food restaurants and I implore the owners to reconsider this. It wasn't only our appetizer, it was setting the mood for the rest of the dinner. When you start out your dinner with a velvetta like soup that resembled lumpy dip more than actual soup (I wish I were kidding), it starts you off with pure sadness. The accompanying pretzel bread was soft but not that good and barely had any salt on it. Looks like someone wiped it all off actually. Tasted like they bought it at wally world. This soup was such a heartache for me. So on to the magic question if we would return, probably not. Sadly if we do, we won't order as much food and would definitely stay away from so many "mehs" on the menu. This place can, and use to, do better but overall it was still an ok dinner. read more

There is celebrated history for my family aligning with German culture as my oldest daughter was born in Bavarian Germany. So naturally, we try our best to find the local German cuisine and festivities everywhere that we travel and live. Luckily for us, we discovered Mr. Dunderbak's, which wasn't incredibly too far from Lutz. We came mid-afternoon on a Sunday and the parking lot was full - fortunately, we were able to find some spots without waiting too long. As it was the end of September, Mr. Dunderbak's also hosted some Oktoberfest observations and festivities. This meant a bit of a wait for our family of four to be seated inside, but it was worth it! As you walk up to the restaurant, you are greeted with the unique Bavarian-esque calligraphy of its name in bold, golden hue. There was still outdoor seating available when we went in the form of tables and benches that situated in the parking spaces in front of the venue. Approaching the entrance, you will encounter a set of oaken doors that set the stage for your welcome. The doors then open up to a short corridor that which is adorned with wall hangings and lined with cases of beer along its walls, while the incandescent lighting contribute to the tone and ambiance of the restaurant before opening up to the immersive dining space. Immediately, we were reminded of our time spent living in Germany, as well as our travels to Austria. The noise-level was definitely suited for the space and environment that you find at a Biergarten. While the lighting was somewhat dim, the atmosphere was lively and vibrant which didn't rely on the light musical faire playing in the backdrop. There was a playful arrangement of seating areas - from biergarten benches and tables to formal tables with even a dining table under a gazebo centered in the dining space - making Mr. Dunderbak's even more festive. Flanking either side of the main dining space were two smaller rooms, with a full bar. What makes Mr. Dunderbak's even more unique is the mini-store that lines around the main dining space, along with a fully operational deli, offering an assortment of German meats/sausages and groceries (comparable to the Cracker Barrel concept, but better and without the negative media). As for the food, we definitely were able to satisfy our German-cuisine cravings. The menu was rather robust offering a variety of schnitzels and wursts (yes, they have currywurst), while offering a unique American flare with their other menu items. While I did not get any beer to accompany my meal, my wife ordered a Radler - and a grapefruit one at that - which arguably made her day. The jagerschnitzel, sauerkraut, and potato salad were solid, while the nurnberger (wursts) and spatzle were a hit with my kids. Overall, we had a great experience at Mr. Dunderbak's and will definitely be back again. This is a great place to go with groups and to simply enjoy company! Prost! read more

Transport to Germany! This place blew my expectations out of the water. There are 3 separate rooms and bar areas. The interior decor is spot-on. They have kegs lining the entry. There is an assortment of German treats you can buy to take home. We enjoyed the potato pancakes and pretzel with cheese and mustard. The pork jagerschnitzel was so crispy and juicy, with a perfect gravy over top. The warm German potato salad on the side was delightful with a strong vinegar flavor. The atmosphere is welcoming and the decor is classic German kitsch. However, my visit to the deli was disappointing. I had such high hopes for this place. :( The selection is very limited and perhaps I missed something (entirely possible), but I did not see a price list for the deli case. We did find a unique assortment of other German products- some we haven't seen in many years. The restaurant portion was quite busy and the customers looked happy. We were flooded with nostalgia and left in hopes of dining in on a less-busy day. I ordered two meats, including the German bologna. During the drive home, my family and I noticed a terrible odor-- the kind where we started pointing fingers at one another. We never suspected that the package from the deli was the source. When we opened it at home, a nauseatingly funky, ammonia-type smell came from the German bologna. While the liverwurst smelled okay, I could not trust it after the bologna and decided against keeping it. Wasted time and money. Dang! The staff is super nice and that was truly a plus. I got the German Pork Schnitzel and it was fantastic! It covered the whole plate. Light and crispy, yet tender on the inside, it pairs perfectly with the many German beers they have on tap. The side dishes of braised red cabbage and spaetzle was the perfect side dish pairing. The tartness of the cabbage cut through the richness of the pork while the delicious spaetzle was the perfect textural contrast to the pork. Overall, excellent place I would come back to! The food was really good. The inside of the space is well decorated and feels like you've entirely transformed across the globe to eat German food. The service is really fast. They're super attentive and if it does feel like the service is a little slow be super patient because there is only a handful of people working there. The menu is super cool because it's German and English together. My friends and I all came and we sat at their long tables, it didn't feel cramped, but it felt very lively. There is an accordion player playing live music throughout the night and also they're doing a Oktoberfest raffle so the attendance inside felt very high as everybody is enjoying their beers and their schnitzels. read more

Amazing. Such a treat to discover that Mr Dunderbak's survives after we thought they were gone. This is a restaurant with a personality. We didn't have a single thing that we didn't like here. A liter of Haufbrau Dunkel, a plate of sausages with red cabbage, followed by house made Black Forest cake, they are still 109% on their game. If you have an inkling of liking German food, this is your place. On top of that the market spread around is amazing to browse. We came for Valentine's Day and while it was crowded we got a seat right away. Friendly service, the lady who took us to our table had a dirndl on, and a man played music on the Accordion in the middle of the room. I saw all the German products and treats right away and we bought a bunch of things, Rotkohl, Goldsaft, chocolate, German Wafers, Kalter Hund, a classic. We got the Schweinshaxe, Schnitzel and Leberkaese with sides: Rotkohl, potatoes, vegetable soup, dumplings, salad. My husband had a beer. The food was good, definitely got my cravings for a German food filled. I would have given 5 Stars but given that I grew up on German food there are a few things that could be a little more "authentic" or maybe the way it was made in our home, local restaurants around us or even when traveling through Germany have a different taste/flavor. What a gem! I went to the old one at University Mall (I'm aging myself!) and was curious to see what had changed. Nothing! Which is great. I had a wonderful soup and sandwich special.
