They let you get dressed on your own unless you want someone in there with you (which is actually so nice). The store is small but has an amazing selection of dresses. I found a number of dresses I really liked and was so happy to finally find the one! I couldn't commit immediately and they were very understanding. They took pictures for me (which apparently some stores do not allow) and talked me through the whole process. When it cane to ordering, I was so scared because it was 5 months before my wedding and most bridal salons told me that I was a fool for waiting so long! Here, they confirmed that I had plenty of time. Some of their dresses were available for preorder and could arrive as early as two months later while even if my size wasn't in preorder, it would arrived more than a month before my wedding. I ended up ordering it and they called less than a month later to say it had arrived. Nothing but wonderful things to say about this place. Trust me-- this is the best place to get a dress!

Gus Mayer is one of those legacy Birmingham stores that you make your lovely Grandmother take you to to shop at. They have all the nice brands and an excellent black tie gown section if you need something unique and spectacular. My favorite thing to look at here is always the shoes, expect to spend at least $200 on a pair of shoes. But, they're shoes you can't find anywhere else in town. **A note for this year (2025): they had a pair of shoes I wanted that were from Italy, and upon messaging the brand directly, I do believe I avoided some hefty tariff fees by buying the shoes IRL here. Food for thought. I don't often shop in person at all anymore (I'm a major e-bay fanatic), but being able to go in and try on different sizes is incredibly nice. I ended up getting a pair of jeans and shoes in a different size than what I would have ordered online. They have dresses anywhere from $100-$2k, with all the brands like Zimmerman, Staud, etc. They have Mother jeans and my all time fav jeans brand, Mousy -- which were 50% off yesterday!! The "doorbusters" they advertised online were not the bread and butter of what you come here for. Come to peruse. Shoes and handbags are what I recommend. I met my sons girlfriend in tears last friday because she did not have a check I paid the check and we get the dress. I was with both her and her mom when they tried on the dress and paid deposit and NEVER told or circled the security check. When she gets home and trues on the dress after she had been fitted for the dress, it is nowhere near correct. The strap on the dress had been altered do much she could not get it on. Her mom had to fix it herself. The dress appeared to not have been cleaned and a few other issues as well. Customer Service is not a strong skill at thus shop and Mrs Marty is the worst by far.
