Excellent food (and portions). Did well with fusion - e.g. shrimp sashimi with foi gras and umeshu sauce.

A bowl of pho is like $20 but that seems to be about the going rate in Europe. Beware this place can get super packed during peak hours so try to plan around that. Otherwise, I'd say this place is actually pretty good!

We were seated quickly and had time to look at the menu before ordering. My fiancé ordered the Pho bo (beef) and I ordered the pho ga (chicken). It's a little different from the usual pho we order because they include meatballs in pho bo (which normally would be a separate type of order) and the pho ga had marinated chicken. The broth was light and savory, with much of the flavor coming from the meat. It was so flavorful!! We also ordered the summer roll, a usual appetizer everywhere we go, which was packed well and had eggs and a tiny egg roll! I haven't had it like this anywhere else (not even back at home). It was also a great dish to start with before the main dish! The place can get pretty crowded but every time we've gone in we have been lucky to beat the dinner and lunch rush.

I was walking casually down in Torshov when I felt a disturbance in the Force. A new Vietnamese…read morerestaurant has just opened in town. I couldn't resist a takeaway banh mi, and was pleasantly surprised to see not one, but SEVEN different banh mi. The charsiu banhmi was proper: crunchy baguette, zingy filling, hoisin sauce and cilantro. This dig showed promises. So yesterday I had a proper sit-down affair. The crispy duck was true to its crispiness and delicious if a bit heavy on the ginger. The wonton soup and the seafood in satay sauce (a rather unusual combination) checked out okay. The seafood tasted freshly prepared, still had a good snap to it, not drenched in sauce for hours on end. It would be even better with less ginger and bamboo shoots, but I'm nitpicking. It was a good deal, 2-course meal for 200 kr. It's not a pure Vietnamese per se. It's a pan-Asian restaurant with a rather generic menu. Normally that is a death sentence, but this is an exception because they cook everything better than standard Asian restaurants of Oslo. Apart from the lack of heat (can be fixed by a dollop of Sriracha), the spices are quite alright, and it's officially added to my honorable list of "great cheap eats".

The broth also tasted artificial and almost no flavor. I am Vietnamese and have had pho across the multiple states and countries and this was definitely one of the worst. The duck salad on the other hand was very good. It had a good seasoning and the duck meat itself was good, although small sized strips. The restaurant itself was very nice looking. Decor and atmosphere was welcoming. It was a little hard to find since it is inside the shopping center. Managed by Vietnamese lady. The service was below standard. There was only one lady managing the restaurant when we were there. She was nice until we mentioned we needed separate checked then she clearly got frustrated. I admit we should have told her beforehand so that is not all fault. However in the service industry it is not ok to display those reactions to customers. The duck salad came out in good time. The pho came out much later, and we noticed other tables got their pho before ours even though we arrived earlier (according to my friend--I did not pay close attention to this). If you want real pho go to Lille Saigon. If you want a place with a good location on a tourist street, and nice restaurant setting, but don't care about pho, then this place might do the trick for you. I'm really surprised at all the other positive reviews...they must not have had the pho.

There were alarm bells as I came in - a full bar (unless it's an upscale restaurant, Asian dives should be all about food, and not a damn about drinks).. and big groups of customers but lacking in Asians, always a bad omen in an Asian eatery.. Then it dawned to me that the name "Viet Nam House" sounds exactly like the generic name an inexperienced diner would go to ("Hei Asgeir, do you want to try 'Vietnamese' food? I think I saw a place once called Viet Nam House.") But let's drop the prejudice and give it a fair shake. I have a particular set mind when I want a Pho - a true test of a Vietnamese restaurant - rich, beefy broth, delicate balance of herbs and spices, but beefy. Thinly sliced raw beef that cooks in that very hot broth. What they serve is a weak broth, way too sweet, very dark, with thick chunks of beef. It's not tasteless, it's just not a good pho. (Norway being expensive, I ate all of it up anyway lol). It is at least a notch below the phos of the two other vietnamese around. Combined with a disappointment of another dish, a stir-fry chicken and vegetables, then I give this place a very weak 2 star. What's up with Norway's infatuation of wok dishes with huge chunks of onions anyway? The chicken stir-fry is instead a sloppy pot of bamboo shoot/quartered onions/paprika. It's a little better than average Norwegian-Asians go, so I'll give it a 1.5-star.

Both were excellent, but what blew us away was the speed and quality of service. Plates were being fired our way from the kitchen immediately, servers were responsive and polite while dealing with the rest of a fairly busy restaurant. It's also worth mentioning that Tom Kha is my very favorite soup and theirs leaves nothing to be desired. I tried my friends pho and felt the same. I highly recommend checking this place out. All four of us were grateful for the great food and service after an exhausting day.
