Delicious!! I love Vietnamese food and these people know how to cook it. Combined with friendly staff I would def recommend Xich Lo. I was by myself on a business trip but also saw plenty of groups as well as couples. I would call the place casual chic. Dont be frightened by the entrance. Just go in at the department store and you'll see the signs (up the stairs at the cashmere place). Enjoy!

Excellent food and service! ! Only place I can order decent chicken rice (without chicken meat) in Oslo. Their chicken rice is a MUST for all main dishes! !!

We were hunting for a simple soup noodle on snowy night and ended up with a 4-star meal. We had spring rolls and baked scallops to start; baked lobsters and seafood as mains. All were fresh and flavorful. As an added bonus, the side rice served was chicken rice! While very tasty, this review would have been 5 stars if the dishes were more Vietnamese-styled rather than just Asian-ish (p/s: the spring roll dipping sauce was a tad bland)

    Lovely evening in Oslo

We were seated quickly and had time to look at the menu before ordering. My fiancé ordered the Pho bo (beef) and I ordered the pho ga (chicken). It's a little different from the usual pho we order because they include meatballs in pho bo (which normally would be a separate type of order) and the pho ga had marinated chicken. The broth was light and savory, with much of the flavor coming from the meat. It was so flavorful!! We also ordered the summer roll, a usual appetizer everywhere we go, which was packed well and had eggs and a tiny egg roll! I haven't had it like this anywhere else (not even back at home). It was also a great dish to start with before the main dish! The place can get pretty crowded but every time we've gone in we have been lucky to beat the dinner and lunch rush.

I couldn't resist a takeaway banh mi, and was pleasantly surprised to see not one, but SEVEN different banh mi. The charsiu banhmi was proper: crunchy baguette, zingy filling, hoisin sauce and cilantro. This dig showed promises. So yesterday I had a proper sit-down affair. The crispy duck was true to its crispiness and delicious if a bit heavy on the ginger. The wonton soup and the seafood in satay sauce (a rather unusual combination) checked out okay. The seafood tasted freshly prepared, still had a good snap to it, not drenched in sauce for hours on end. It would be even better with less ginger and bamboo shoots, but I'm nitpicking. It was a good deal, 2-course meal for 200 kr. It's not a pure Vietnamese per se. It's a pan-Asian restaurant with a rather generic menu. Normally that is a death sentence, but this is an exception because they cook everything better than standard Asian restaurants of Oslo. Apart from the lack of heat (can be fixed by a dollop of Sriracha), the spices are quite alright, and it's officially added to my honorable list of "great cheap eats".

Viet Nam House completes a trio of vietnamese restaurant in the area, but unfortunately it is the…read moreleast impressive of the three. There were alarm bells as I came in - a full bar (unless it's an upscale restaurant, Asian dives should be all about food, and not a damn about drinks).. and big groups of customers but lacking in Asians, always a bad omen in an Asian eatery.. Then it dawned to me that the name "Viet Nam House" sounds exactly like the generic name an inexperienced diner would go to ("Hei Asgeir, do you want to try 'Vietnamese' food? I think I saw a place once called Viet Nam House.") But let's drop the prejudice and give it a fair shake. I have a particular set mind when I want a Pho - a true test of a Vietnamese restaurant - rich, beefy broth, delicate balance of herbs and spices, but beefy. Thinly sliced raw beef that cooks in that very hot broth. What they serve is a weak broth, way too sweet, very dark, with thick chunks of beef. It's not tasteless, it's just not a good pho. (Norway being expensive, I ate all of it up anyway lol). It is at least a notch below the phos of the two other vietnamese around. Combined with a disappointment of another dish, a stir-fry chicken and vegetables, then I give this place a very weak 2 star. What's up with Norway's infatuation of wok dishes with huge chunks of onions anyway? The chicken stir-fry is instead a sloppy pot of bamboo shoot/quartered onions/paprika. It's a little better than average Norwegian-Asians go, so I'll give it a 1.5-star.

Both were excellent, but what blew us away was the speed and quality of service. Plates were being fired our way from the kitchen immediately, servers were responsive and polite while dealing with the rest of a fairly busy restaurant. It's also worth mentioning that Tom Kha is my very favorite soup and theirs leaves nothing to be desired. I tried my friends pho and felt the same. I highly recommend checking this place out. All four of us were grateful for the great food and service after an exhausting day.

I am extremely happy to see a Banh Mi joint finally in Oslo in the form of Miss Gin. A very popular…read morefood trend today is Asian fusion, but the Vietnamese has been doing this way before it became fashionable. The banh mi is a perfect example of Vietnamese fusion. A banh mi basically combines French baguette and Asian fillings. It is really the embodiment of East meets West, which Vietnamese cuisine is famous for. I myself am a big fan of Vietnamese cuisine and was very eager to try out Miss Gin. My wife and I decided to try Miss Gin after seeing excellent reviews on Yelp. We both ordered the Chasiu (roast red pork) banh mi as we both love chasiu. I must say, it was love at first bite! The baguette was crunchy on the outside and chasiu was sweet and savory. Being Vietnamese, flavors were balanced with pickled carrots and radish, bit of heat from the seasoned fish sauce, and freshness from the cucumber and cilantro (koriander). Miss Gin is a perfect example of how to stay true to one type of cuisine and doing it well. Although Miss Gin is a relatively small take out restaurant, their choice to showcase Vietnamese street food and banh mi fits their profile. Prices are extremely fair for Norway food prices. Vietnam was trully highlighted in their food selection and I look forward to trying out the other banh mi selections and spring rolls.

Miss Gin is a tiny little hole in the wall on Thorvald Meyers Gate. I hopped on in and browsed the cold and hot case curiously. I saw something called pig ear salad that was almost interesting enough to buy and take home, maybe next time. I ended up ordering the pork banh mi to go. It took about 10 minutes or so, which went by quickly while sitting on their comfy stools (I am short so they were just the right height). While waiting I saw pictures on the wall of other items on the menu... the fresh rolls look really good! I plan on ordering those next time. I took my banh mi to go and nestled it in my sack hoping it'd stay warm on the hike home. It's aroma tempted me on my journey and I was happy to see that it was still warm when I unwrapped it in my kitchen. Miss Gin does a great job on the bread, it's delicious, I am not sure if they bake it in house or order it in, but I did see him toast it in the oven, so it had a pleasant crunch. The mayo, to meat, to pickled veggie ratios were spot on! The meat was really really flavorful, I am not sure what spices or marinade were involved but it was so good. I polished off the whole thing, send a picture to my husband, and bragged I had an amazing banh mi in Norway! I can't wait to go back!
