Luis M has magic hands. I was visiting the area and feel so fortunate to randomly find this place and Luis. I will be visiting a lot more often because of him. I have chronic neck issues and have had trigger point injections, facet joint injections, branch blocks, chiropractic care, etc. his massage was healing and he seemed to know exactly how to get the muscles to calm down. I felt so much better leaving the office than I did entering. Building is older, but studio is lively and inviting. read more

The woman who greeted me at the front desk was lovely - warm and inviting; took my coat and offered me the key to the ladies room right away! Carlos, my LMT, came to get me in the lovely, clean, bright waiting room a few minutes early and brought me back to my treatment room. Carlos was amazing - very strong hands and it was obvious that he is a skilled LMT by the way that he paid attention to the areas that were the most stressed. My one complaint is that upon first entering the treatment room, there was a very strong smell of curry. I have a very sensitive nose, so I thought this might stand in the way of my relaxation, but as soon as Carlos began working on me, I smelled nothing at all! read more

I got a massage here yesterday and today after I ran the NYC Marathon on Sunday. I was so happy to hear they had a buy one get one free special! I really needed it after running the race. Greg gave me AMAZING massages, I loved the use of heating pads. I feel so much better and am able to walk again haha. Thank you so much Mpower! read more

Hey, I have been going here for one reason and his name is RICHARD...this is the only time I have been able to get a massage that is a real deep tissue massage where he works on all my built up scar tissue and knots from long distance running. Although his massage is not for the faint of heart, the next day I feel like I have on a new set of legs!! The only reason I am giving this place 3 starts is because I am sad to see that I can no longer find Richard in the booking slots, which means I guess he is gone? read more

I got a Lifebooker voucher for a 1-hr deep tissue massage here. It was definitely the best back massage I have ever had! My back always has a ton of knots, and Alain did a great job of working on them. He also worked my upper chest because (according to him) some of the tightness in my back was related to the tightness in my upper chest. I didn't realize how bad my pecs were. He also gave me suggestions of stretches to do to prevent them from getting so tight. I came here with my friend and her mother, and they also greatly enjoyed their massages. Granted, this is no spa. You're not going to walk around in a fancy bathrobe in a posh lavender filled spa. It's in a random office in a random building that seems kind of sketchy to get to. I personally don't look for that spa experience with my massages-- I look for the good old press-your-elbow-into-my-back-and-work-those-knots kind of massage. But if you can get past the fact that this is no spa, you are in for an awesome massage. My only qualm with this place is that their regular prices are so pricey! A bit beyond my budget. So this unfortunately will not be a place I can go to all the time. But... the massages here are awesome. read more

I should have done this along time ago...sorry, Tanya...I received a massage at Massage America through Groupon about a month ago. Tanya was my therapist. She was very communicative regarding which muscles I wanted to focus on, problem areas, pressure and depth of massage, etc. She was soft-spoken, gentle, and approachable in her demeanor, but tough on my knots. I would definitely recommend her as your go-to therapist. She was engaging throughout the massage, but still managed to keep the overall atmosphere very relaxing. When I return to MA, I would definitely request her specifically. As for MA on the whole, I thought the surroundings were lovely and tranquil. I was not expecting the space to be as lovely and well-appointed as it was. All in all, I found everything to be professional and to exceed my expectations. I have no complaints. read more

Friendly and well educated staff Amazing massage New location, so make sure to read the confirmation email carefully Appointments are fast and no two to three week wait like most spas For me, Massage America is very pricey, even the Groupon discount was expensive for me, but maybe $170 for a 90-minute deep tissue massage is an extremely great deal for you. If so, HOP ON IT! What are you waiting for?! lol I HIGHLY recommend MA You'll feel amazing after this massage. read more

I Love Massage America & MPower. I'm a long time client, and have always been extremely happy with my massages from Gregory and his staff. Gregory's an amazing therapist...extremely knowledgable & intuitive, but also sweet and kind. I also like to try different therapists, and have never been dissapointed here. I feel very peaceful, welcomed and relaxed in the space, and balanced and happy when I leave after a great massage! read more

I highly recommend Mpower Bodywork if you are looking for a high quality and relaxing massage. I am the recipient of over 100 massages over my long life and I understand what is good and bad about massages. My massage was delivered by Olivia. She was professional, focused on my specific "pain points" and providing a relaxing atmosphere. MOST IMPORTANTLY...Olivia only talked when I initiated conversation which to me is a key to a great massage experience. She followed my lead which is a rare trait in the business read more

I've been going here for over a year already and have been nothing but happy with the results. The acupuncturist as well as the massage therapists that I've encountered are professional and kind. I went here for a graduation gift and it was wonderful!!!! I already went back for a second appointment! I had two different therapists and they were both great. Fear not the 'sketchy' hallway - a clean, professional, friendly oasis awaits - I've been going here intermittently since 2006 when find myself in insufferable pain or when I can actually afford to! I have always seen Gregory, who is The Master, but today I really wanted an appointment and the only person available was Candice, so I took the risk. As others have said, her massage felt gentle but it was dynamite deep tissue! She zeroed right in on my problem (sciatica provoked from running injury), gave me immediate relief, and explained a simple, longer-term recovery plan. She was very warm and caring, but she was not at all touchy-feely and she did not chitter-chat or ask personal questions during the massage. The whole experience left me feeling more relaxed and better physically than I've felt in months. Candice is great!! I'm giving it 4 stars because 1) they need to fix their web site and 2) it is too pricey for me to refer friends to!! read more

I had an amazing deep tissue massage with Sera! I am a dancer and had ankle surgery about a month ago and I needed some intense work on my scar tissue and she applied enough pressure (and I asked for even more and she did) to release a lot of bound scar tissue in the surgery area. Usually when I get massages no one really applies enough pressure in combination with great technique and Sera did! She seems to be really aware of all the muscles and how to work on them correctly to release them,. She was also so kind, friendly and wonderful and made the atmosphere so calm and relaxing. Even after the massage was over, she kindly gave me some releasing techniques for my foot & ankle. I will definitely be going back for more! It is expensive 115 for a 60 minute scar tissue and plus tip, but they have a buy one get one free deal for new clients! But don't forget to tip for that second session! read more

This is my first Yelp review, and I feel compelled to write because I am impressed with Massage America's professionalism. As someone who has tried out dozens of massage therapists in NYC over the past several years, I know what I like and can tell when someone knows what they're doing. (For years I had one regular therapist, but she moved away and I had been searching for her equal ever since!) So I was pleasantly surprised when my first massage at M.A. with Amanda, a few months ago, was awesome. Her technique is amazing and the pressure... so deep and effective and just heavenly. I felt great for days. Two weeks ago I showed up for another massage with Amanda. I was on time, even a bit early. But ten minutes after my scheduled start time, Amanda came out to greet me, and apologized, telling me that she was running late and it would be yet another 15 minutes before we could begin. Naturally, I was disappointed, so I called Gregory (management) to let him know I wasn't going to be able to stay for my session that day. He was extremely apologetic -- he had not known that the previous session was running late -- and offered me a comped session in addition to rescheduling my cancelled one. (I want to make it clear that in offering me this "freebie," at no time was there a mention of writing a Yelp review! I am writing this of my own volition.) It's becoming more and more of a challenge in this city to find businesses that make you feel like a valued customer, and Massage America certainly accomplished that. I had my rescheduled massage with Amanda a few nights ago and it was even awesomer than the first time! (Plus we even got started early.) read more

I had a deep tissue massage with Luis at the Midtown location (Manhattan Athletic Club) and it was great. He asked me the right questions in the beginning (whether I wanted him to focus on any particular area, what level of pressure I wanted, whether I had any injuries, etc.) and he would occasionally check in to make sure the level of pressure was right, and adjust based on my feedback. I do have a couple of old injuries, and he was great about being gentle around those but not avoiding them completely. I wasn't just looking for a gentle relaxation massage, and this was exactly what I needed - real firm muscle work. The setting was also very nice. As others have said, it's not a high-end spa, but I care far more about the massage itself than the room it's in. (I have my eyes closed during the massage, anyway!) I do care about the music and the smell, and both of those were great - the music wasn't cheesy or too new-age-y, but it was relaxing and pleasant. And the room smelled fresh and clean and it wasn't overly perfumed. Lastly, I had arrived late (horrible subway issues) and Luis took a little extra time with me to make up for some of that lateness, which was very kind of him and completely unexpected, but very much appreciated. I don't give five stars easily - I reserve them for really outstanding experiences - but this was a solid massage and I highly recommend Luis. *Note - this was a Groupon, and I didn't have any problem scheduling (and I waited until the week before it expired), which was great. read more

I love that MPower is offering facials now! I had such a relaxing facial with Sarah, the scents of the products she used were so fresh, my skin looks 10 years younger & healthier and it feels great! The best part of her signature facial is she doesn't walk out of the room while you're enjoying the steam or letting the masque dry. She continues to pamper with a foot, arm, head & neck massage! I nearly fell asleep and enjoyed every minute, thanks Sarah! read more

Alex Lippard worked on me using Shiatsu/acupressure treatment for headaches. I have an incurable Brain Illness known as," Refractory Chronic Cluster Headache." Otherwise known as, "Suicide Headaches." This Brain condition earned the nick name by being, as my Neurologist, Dr. Peter Goadsby writes, "Refractory Chronic Cluster Headaches provide the worst pain known to man or woman on Earth." So, now I'll finally land the plane... While I was headed into a Cluster Cycle, I decided to receive a treatment from Alex. Mind you NOTHING works to relieve me of this excruciating pain besides some pretty heavy duty, prescribed pain medications, and an oxygen tank to boot. Even with pain meds, these headaches usually last for 3-4 hours. However, when I got the Shiatsu treatment, Alex was able to shorten the length of time and the intensity of this Headache! It was like a miracle! The period of time this cycle lasted was only an hour as well as the pain level going down from a 10 to a 5 within the first 10 minutes of my massage, absolutely INCREDIBLE!!! I wish Alex lived closer to me (I live in San Diego, CA), as I would have him use this particular massage therapy on a regular basis. As this is the first time in 4 years something other than pain medication helped me to get this horrible pain under control. Not only under control, but in a shorter period of time with much less intensity. Everyone who has the opportunity to get a massage(s) from Alex should do so, I can't recommend him highly enough!!! Karrie T was WONDERFUL. Magical. There aren't enough words to describe how amazing I felt after my Swedish massage. Firstly, she was so attentive -- I showed her the problem areas of my back where I was feeling pain, and she knew exactly what to do to treat it, explaining to me why i was aching and how she was helping. Also, I wanted her to focus mainly on my back, shoulders, neck, and arms (not my legs) and she graciously complied. I explained to her that I had a herniated disc, and she immediately said that she would be gentle in my neck area, which she was. My favorite part of the massage was when she used a lot of pressure in her hands on my lower back and carried the pressure up to my shoulders, which felt so awesome. I came in with an exorbitant amount of tension and left feeling as light as a feather. I remember telling her my back and shoulders felt a bit like jelly afterwards--- It felt like I was floating! Also- Karrie had such a soothing demeanor and presence. At the end of my massage, she held her fingers to the sides of my neck for about thirty seconds without moving, and when I asked her about it afterwards, she said she was radiating positive thoughts and healing energy --- which I LOVED and appreciated so much. It really was a luxurious experience and I definitely will be back!! Thank you, Karrie! read more

I am a member at their location at the Manhattan Athletic Club on Park Avenue & 48th St. I see Juliana once a once for the best deep tissue massage I've ever had. And by deep tissue, I mean deep. If you want true therapeutic massage - by experienced, well trained therapists, this is the place! I have chronic headaches, and have been getting massage for over 20 years. Granted this is NOT a spa, but it doesnt need to be. There are plenty of pricy spas in the city - usually with crappy, overworked massage therapists. Massage America is no frills, no robe, no bathroom, get your elbow in a knot and give you that good type of pain massage. I love it! Massage America has some of the best masseurs in one place - if my first choice therapist is busy, anyone I have gotten instead has been fantastic. Making my list of favorites quite long. These therapists are there to help you. To teach you about your body pains, show you ways to help after you leave. I say I am going to physical therapy instead of getting a massage - because that is the type of genuine care I receive there. This place is a gem in the city full of imitator massage places. This is the real deal, for a real therapeutic excellent massage. I highly recommend this place! read more

I am always happy when I leave Mpower (formerly Massage America). No matter which massage therapist I book with, I have faith that they are qualified individuals. (That is huge for me as I won't relax if I think someone is using the same skills I'd basically have.) My most recent visit was to Alex. He was thorough and knowledgeable. He asked enough questions to know what might work for me and it really did, not just muscle tightness but breathing as well. I need to book another while I'm thinking of it. Sitting at a desk all day needs to be offset! The owner, Gregory, hires a consistently skilled and pleasant staff. So, whomever you get, just be clear about what you want/are comfortable with and you should leave happy. If you aren't sure what service you prefer, Gregory is helpful in that area as well. If I had to find one negative -- I don't love leaving that bldg late at night since it is a very quiet building with not many people around. If that bothers you, just be sure to book an early evening appointment. I've gone after work and felt fine. I'd bet if I asked the therapist to walk me to the elevator, they probably would. They want you to leave relaxed, happy, and healthier. read more

Can't speak highly enough about Carlos. I went to him twice with the BOGO offer (great value btw). I haven't had such a competent therapist in years. He inquired of my problem areas beforehand, applied just the right amount of pressure, and got out knots I'd had for several weeks. I'll be going back to him for sure. As for facilities, they are clean and comfortable, no frills. I've been to many "spas" in the past and have been less than satisfied despite their amenities. When I go for a massage, I want a good therapist who will take the time to learn what I need and deliver, and I've been more than satisfied with my visits so far. read more

I bought a lifebooker loot for the 75 min deep tissue massage and it was pretty good. I was satisfied with the service. The place was convenient to get to (near union square), they have late hours (I work late so I like places that will honor later appointments) and it was a no frills place which I don't mind at all. It's not a spa but I don't care. I want more massage value for my money so i don't need cucumber water and slippers and candles. I just want a really good, competent therapist to give me some relief which is what I got. I had Marisel and I was satisfied with the massage she gave me. She asked good, specific questions (I have IT band issues and was experiencing a lot of tenderness in one of them on the day I showed up so she was really good at adjusting the amount of pressure to just enough where I felt my muscles being worked out and released, but not too painful where it would be excruciating to endure. You have to speak up and let your therapist know what your needs are and Marisel was totally nice and didn't mind my speaking up and she also was very knowledgeable about IT band issues and offered some good feedback which made me feel really comfortable having her work on me since she knew a lot of about the ailments/discomfort with IT band. She is small but she is pretty strong. My only issue is that I was supposed to get a 75 min massage but I think we started late and she even stepped out for a few mins so overall I don't think I got 75 mins but it was a lifebooker loot so whatever I ended up paying was worth it for the massage that I got. I would definitely go again. I agree that it's a little confusing to come in and not have a reception area or someone there to greet you. I had to kind of stand there for a few mins waiting for someone to come out. Maybe it would be helpful to post a sign that says to please have a seat and wait for someone to come out just so you know that eventually someone will come out and greet you and that way you won't be confused or alarmed when you're just standing there by yourself. I was given towels to clean off with at the end of the massage and unlike others, I liked the shea butter over massage oils that are overly greasy and get everywhere. I also thought the space was a little on the chilly side but the heated table was fine. It was clean, uncluttered and roomy enough for the therapist to move around. Again, for me, I prefer less frills if that lowers the overall price of the massage and you get more value for you money. If you want a true spa experience with slippers and fancy bottled water, then pay extra and go somewhere else. read more

All of Gregory's points are completely wrong. The place i went to recently was LICENSED. The asian places don't need to speak ENGLISH. They just touch your body and feel the trouble areas, and automatically go to work on you. Your massage therapists may be "licensed", but i'd suggest the one who worked on me get a full refund from whatever company trained him. Licensed apparently doesn't equal skill. I did not receive correct instructions, and in fact, a friend who walked with me to the place said that you should have told me where the entrance was. The office was dead when i went there, i was the only customer at the time. I"m sorry, i've been to at least 20 different massage places and massage america is hands down the worst massage experience i ever had. FACT. Look at my other reviews, most of them are 4 or 5 stars, it's not like i go around giving 1 star to every business. Anyone who spends money on this place....i feel bad for them. If you are wondering if you should go to massage america, email me and i'll give you names and places of licensed massage therapists at much better establishments. ALSO, in reading other reviews, i see that other people had similar problems. Therapists telling you at the last minute they are "sick". Only getting 45 minutes for an hour massage. Therapists not being skilled. Problems finding the place. Glad you have "90" approval, apparently a lot of people don't know what a good massage really is. I've tried the best, so i guess i was not impressed. read more

I went to the Park Ave location and it left a lot to be desired. This place is inside the Manhattan Athletic Club. I showed up there and told them I was there for a massage. The woman working the front desk gestured over her shoulder and said its back that way just know on the door. So I did and after a few minutes a guy opened the door. Now I was about 10 minutes early so I understand they weren't ready for me, but the guy looked completely surprised when I knocked like he had no idea why I was there. So I said I would wait outside and went and sat on a hence in the locker room. Finally after sitting there for about 15 minutes the lady from the front desk walked back and noticed I was still sitting there. She said, oh he hasn't come to get you yet? So she knocked and talked to him and once again came out and told me to knock on the door yet again. This time he answered and welcomed me into the room. The rest went pretty much as expected. The massage itself was nothing special, the skill of the masseuse was average or just below. At the end he just said thanks. He didn't offer me water just said you can change and I will be back. When he came back he said I owed $3 tax(I used a lifebooker certificate). I gave him a $5 to which he said he had no change. I just told him to keep it along with the tip which after the fact I wish I hadn't given him. Overall the experience left a bad taste in my mouth. I know it's not a spa and I got a deal, but can't they still offer a little bit of customer service? I will not go back there and I would try to dissuade anyone I know from going there. read more

I called and spoke to Gregory who is the owner of Massage America. he said it cost $105 but he woudl give me the buy one get one free deal. I knew all the therapists were licensed compared to the many chinese unlicensed massqes I have had. So Ireceived my appointment in writing last week for last night. I showed up and no one was there at 32 Union Sq East. I had appointment with Wen. he was with soemone so I wasited a few minutes. I was brought to a small room with a massage table right behind the receptionist adn their front door entrance. There was playing the spa soudns whcih I asked WEn to turn the msuic down as it was too loud. so he returned after I undressed. he began the masssage and seemed pretty goodwtih medium pressure, however I heard loud and clear nonstop the receptionist discussng moeny and business with other customers; the door opeing and shutting loudly people talkig and walking a foot oudside the door; it was nonstop I even asked Wen to turn up teh annoying spa sounds but it did not help gto drown out the osuide nosie as it was so close to the room. . Gregoy boasts that all masseuse are licensed hwoever I went to Swedish insitute and had graduating students work on me. You coudl not ehar a pin drop in thsoe massage rooms and ti wsa guaranteed relaxinging. Gregory has alot of nerve to charge $105 for a massage behind a reception area and doorway wth loud nonstop traffic. is he kidding? It' not appropriate to relaxation which is what I paid for.duuuhhh????I told Wen and he went to see if ther was another room which there wsa not.. and never have I eve stopped a massage because it was so bad... but not WEn but the experience was below poor.. I left after 15 minutes and i still havenet received any apology or anything .. liek an email.. try and charge me for that unprofessonal experience and I wil be noifying NYS professional license regarding this ridiculous episode- which wasted my time.. how does Gregory have the nerve??? I don't recommend this place... tjhat is not the experience they teach in massage school - below zero- ajoke for $105 read more

Like many here I found out about Massage america through Groupons. I had no expectation besides a decent massage compared to the ones I have been getting at SPAs. I did not read reviews before going in. I booked therapists based on their availability and my schedule. I have been back three times. I have been looking for a place to get a massage and just that for sooo long. The frilly side of SPAs annoy and distract me. If I come in for a massage, the width of my pores and the texture of my skin and which French product would take care of them is none of your business. So I was very happy to walk in a place where they were solely interested in the density of my muscles, my health, where it hurts and how much it hurts. Yep, walking through the building was like going through a cinder block corn maze in NYC, but so what? Only one elevator works, but that is temporary bla bla bla...I was there for a massage and it was great so the other nuisances became minor. I had Sharon first, I gave her a 5 out of a 5 but then I had Peter and I wanted to give him a 10 out of 5 and then I had Wen Lin and similarly a 10 out 5. My point is that with the groupons you do feel the slightly less intense side of the massage you get on the 4th floor but then you only realize that after you have a full fledged experience on the 11 floor with longer time periods and more experienced therapists. I like that the therapists are not chatter boxes or if they are, it is about your body and what is going on there. I like that Gregory, the owner of the business is very accessible and approachable via email and here on Yelp. He writes back and responds to inquiries, comments, criticisms. That is a super plus to me. I will not only go back, I will get a subscription if I can afford it. read more

These guys really know what they're doing! My body wants different things at different times and they are so versed at everything so they know how to truly take care of me. Superior to the other factory like places that hire inexperienced people without the level of skill and intuition I have experienced at Mpower from a list of therapists I have seen there. They always help me understand what exactly is going on with my injuries or the biology of my mental stress and how it affects my body. They also know when I need to just zone out and let my body soak up all the healing goodness they lavish on me! With consistent visits, I've healed faster and can keep my stress levels down.
