Worst haircut of my adult life! Do NOT recommend this salon. This was my second haircut and I chose the owner of the salon. The first haircut was actually okay. I returned a couple months later and scheduled again with the owner to cut my hair and it was the worst mistake! I reached out and let her know this time was different and not right. It felt uneven and super chunky layers. I took pictures and sent her a text. She offered to lighten them up. Ugh it only was worse!! Karla did an outstanding job with my highlights, especially in blending the new lightener with my old platinum/heavy highlights. I'm sharing my experience so that others hopefully don't go through the same thing. I spent over 5 hours at this salon and wanted nothing but for the experience to be done. I cried, looking at my hair today. I paid $250 for the service plus $30ish for the tip. Regardless if the stylist / owner responds negativity, my hope is that no one else goes through this. How I was treated was the absolute worst part. She was so frustrated and annoyed that my hair was not cooperative. My hair ended up in knots twice, which has never happened at a salon before, but it's how she handled the situation. She asked if I wanted to bush my hair first, then got impatient that I was going slower. I have fine hair and if you take a bush and rip in the hair , bushing knots as hard as you can - the knots will come out, but at the cost of damaging your hair and having alot of breakage. I was quiet and kind, but I couldn't help my faces. It hurt, and I wanted to cry knowing how damaging she was being. She was huffing and puffing the entire time. At one point she turned me around and asked me what was wrong, when I attempted to voice my concerns she instantly shut me down saying IT HAS TO BE DONE, I HAVE TO GET THE KNOTS OUT I HAVE A DAUGHTER I KNOW HOW TO BRUSH HAIR. When you ask people to communicate, then bite their heads off, it doesn't make anyone comfortable. At one point, she's like, "Oh my god, we're gonna be here til 11". I was in such a vulnerable state with knoted hair, and she still needed to do the cut . The toner didn't do what she wanted, and she was taking all her frustration out on me. In the end, I was just so ready to be out of the situation. She wanted me to come back, but who wants to go back to a stylist who treated you that way. I attempted to go to the owner as a third party because I didn't feel comfortable talking to her after that. I was shut down, as it was her, and her only solution was to come back to her to "fix" my hair. I said I didn't feel comfortable after everything, and she just ed my response. I was kind the entire time and tipped. I can't bear going back to be treated like that again and have my hair ripped into. I told her I liked the brightness, I said I didn't want to do the tone again that night after two washes that resulted in significant knots to my hair and her growing frustration. Typically, you try not to make the people with your hair in their hands more upset, and it wasn't a good situation to stay in. She offered to fix it, but I don't feel good about going back after her treatment. read more

If you hate it when people compliment you on your hair, don't go here... I get compliments all the time! I was sad to leave my salon in Santa Rosa but it was impossible to get an appt & when I did they always double booked. It's hard to leave a place you are used to but when I moved to Cotati from Santa Rosa I stumbled on Moxie & gave them a try. I couldn't be happier! It's such a cute location in downtown Cotati. SUPER friendly place, we have such good talks there it's like hanging out with friends......and my HAIR! It looks great & Jocelyn always has great suggestions when I feel like doing something new (I have no clue). I never see anyone double booked so I always get undivided attention for a super reasonable price (I didn't like it when I sat under they dryer in my old place after the timer went off & watched my stylist taking care of someone else for 15 min at higher prices). Now I've moved back to SR but still drive to Cotati because I love how Jocelyn does my hair! I get compliments all the time. Mikell is the BEST! She did such an amazing job with my hair. She listened to what I wanted, was honest about what my hair could handle, and I had a great time visiting with her while I was in her chair. She recommended some great products and even trimmed my hair so it was healthy but not too short (I've been trying to grow it out.) the shop was clean, the atmosphere was relaxing, and the other stylists were super sweet and fun to talk to. If you're looking for a salon with a comfortable vibe and someone who can do amazing things with color, I wouldn't suggest anywhere other than Moxie. I will never go anywhere else and I'll be back in 8 weeks for another haircut to keep my hair healthy! read more

I have been having my hair done at Moxie (or by Joslyn, before it was Moxie!) for over 20 years! She has always done my kids hair too... because when both of them decided they needed to go full rainbow - there was nobody else I trusted with it! And she never fails to knock it out of the park! But the entire salon is staffed with talented stylists! I know we always come in with some ridiculous request for color, cuts, weird rainbows and "oh yeah, also my hair is a hot mess - please fix it!!" ...they never disappoint! These people work magic. Nothing less. I long ago quit trying to figure out what I need... I just trust them to make it right! THEY KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING! And I know they get it right because I don't have the time to put into much effort on my hair, and I get stopped all the time for people to compliment my hair... and it's all them. Moxie rocks!! I heart Brandy. she does a fantastic job on coloring and cutting my hair, and she has done it in such a way that although I have a lot of highlights and beautiful color, it's not so high maintence that I am constantly shelling out money for upkeep. The multi colored highlights look so natural, and my hair is incredibly soft, even after processing. My cut is incredible too! I can wash it, spray some "its a 10" in it, comb it through and walk out the door. no need to style it, it's got a great cut that just falls into place. The flip side of that, is that I can blow it out and flat iron it to be super straight ala Jennifer Aniston or I can put a few curls in it and big beautiful waves. It's all so simple and easy, and the cut lends it self to a million and 1 variations (even a pony tail!) prices are very reasonable, the ladies in the salon are really fun, and it's has such an amazing vibe. Not pretentious, just awesome. I have never had as many compliments about how beautiful my hair is from strangers as I have since Brandy has been doing my hair. Go. see her. now. read more

After year of reading reviews this is the first one I've written. I had scheduled a appointment at this salon. When I walked inside there were two ladies styling their clients hair. One of them looked over at me, and a second later continued conversing and styling the hair of their client. When you enter the salon, your first step is into their working area, and there is a small waiting area in right corner of this salon. I walked over there and sat down for a few minutes. I noticed another stylist washing their clients hair about 15 feet away from where I sat. After four minutes awaiting like a ghost for acknowledgement within the salon, I walked out with the same reception I received when entering. read more

Peggy was very sweet, and her scalp massages are OMG. She charges $45 plus tip for (I'm assuming) any type of haircut. She kept it a little too simple, even though I asked for something drastic. So if you're just going in for a trim, I'd recommend going to a cheaper place. But $45 for a new, complicated style is pretty reasonable--or so I hear. Finally, a hair salon that isn't gossiping and actually gives you the cut/style you request. So often I come out with what the stylist likes, instead of what I ask for- but not at Moxie! I recommend Peggy! She gave an amazing massage at the shampoo bowl, perfect cut and style, and she was friendly. It was comfortable, professional, down to earth, mature, very clean and locally owned. Made my first appointment and it won't be my last! Great atmosphere, staff and product line! I booked an appointment at this place by complete accident, thought it was another place in Cotati. Best mistake I've made! I knew it was gonna be good when I walked in and saw a sea of blue bottles! YEP! they are a Moroccan Oil salon WOO HOO! No longer do I have to drive to Blush in Petaluma for my hair care products. The prices are a tad bit high, but well worth it. Brandy cut my hair (and I will continue to request her) She did a great quality cut and has a delightful personality to go along with her expertise in hair. I DON'T POST BAD REVIEWS - EVER! - but I work in customer service and was not happy with my experience: I was so looking forward to having my hair colored at this local business, and was very impressed when I walked in. It's beautiful and clean inside! But I waited to speak with someone after arranging a time, and then was told a client was running late so I had to either wait 30 minutes or return. So luckily, I had a few errands to run. When I returned, the girl still wasn't ready and i was getting a little impatient. But I waited. And when she did speak, she felt obliged to berate the quality of my hair and the 'dirty' color I had come in to correct! I know!! That's why I came in - to fix it!! And was happy to pay! But if you can't be professional and courteous, I'll just take my business elsewhere. Not a good first impression. I had a very nice experience with Karla yesterday. Based on other reviews on Yelp, I decided to give Moxie a try. I had been thinking of a style change for some time, and have had many truly awful experiences with stylists who didn't have a clue about curly hair, and who were just not good at communicating. Karla was very thorough at asking questions about cuts I'd had in the past, and different types of techniques, and how I felt about them. After some discussion, and after she had evaluated my particular hair, we settled on a chin length bob with the cut slightly longer in the front and shorter at the neck. She also removed some of the bulk of the curl in the back. I feel sorry for hairdressers who have to deal with people like me (phobias about getting haircuts) but Karla did a great job, she's very respectful of what you want, and I really feel lucky to have found her.
