It looked more like a fancy gastropub than something Mediterranean. It was spacious and had long tables and booths, accommodating more than 100 by eyeballing? Regrettably, I didn't take any pictures, but all the dishes were gorgeous. It was supposed to be tapas, but I felt more Italian than Spanish. Not that there's anything wrong with it; it just caught me off guard a bit. Another thing that didn't make me feel like it was tapas was the portion. I was so stuffed, maybe because I was with coworkers who didn't eat much and were assigned to clean out the plates. It was a course, so 5-6 dishes came one after another. The cod, second from the last dish, was good, but the beef cheek was perfect for the finale. The waitress was very attentive and kind. This is the biggest venue in the Movida family, and personally it's my favourite. Why? I like the large bar, I like the bustling dining sections, the big open kitchen - and that getting a spot at the bar without a reservation is not always going to require you to sell your first born (unless it's 8pm on a Friday). The sherry tasting flights are a great way to get your palate used to sherry. There's two (priced at $15 and $25) and both are a great way to sample a few styles. The more expensive is exceptional value, though if you're already in to sherry then order something by the bottle (I'm a fino fiend - a glass of that with some fresh oysters is the winning formula for making me your BFF). Nibble on some olives while you shrug off the day and peruse the daily-changing menu. Expect beef cheek cooked in PX sherry, some fresh sea urchin (yum), a rabbit terrine or a house made morcilla. Even the "regular" menu is anything but - just pointing wildly at anything is sure to leave you happy. I find it hard to come here and not order the hand filleted anchovies with tomato sorbet, the bocadillos de calamares and a board of Serrano (which comes with the simplicity and perfection of the bread rubbed with tomato on the side - that stuff makes me do weird eye rolling things). Stick around and move on to racciones, the delicious things off the plancha or even the paella if your stomach can fit any more in. High-fives if you ever make it to dessert (I never do). read more

WOW! The food was so very very good. This was my first Movida experience and now I have to try them all. There were 2 of us, we ordered about 4 Tapas dishes, mushrooms, venison, calamari sandwich can't recall the last one then from Raciones, jumbo muscles & slow braised beef check. We also had cream brûlée for dessert. I never usually have dessert but I just couldn't stop. Every new dish was better than the last! The service was seamless and extremely professional. This was a stand out exceptional dining experience in every way. Even down to my drink being a bit to sour for me and the wait staff taking it away to be fixed to my taste. I visited Movida with an old friend and we wanted to treat ourselves a bit. We started our night with a pitcher of their sangria (which was a huge pitcher to share for two, which was excellent in our opinion). We had many of their small plates based on the recommendations from the staff. Our favorites were the goat cheese and the prawns. We ate outside and they turned on the gas heaters when the nice spring afternoon turned chilly. It was truly an excellent meal with a great atmosphere. If you are looking for a good place to take a large group then Movida Aqui is for you. It's designed to be more spacious than the original but with a similar menu to delight your senses. It's located at the top level of 500 Bourke, so you will need to take the stairs towards the back of the NAB building. Everyone in our party enjoyed the wide selection of food. There are plenty of meat, seafood and veggie dishes to please all palettes. Dishes come in small and medium sizes, designed to share. The prices were quite high ($22-28 for medium size dish) so expect to pay for the quality you receive. Stand out dishes for me were the rost biff wagyu that is served chilled and finely sliced, grilled pork neck with clams in a light sauce and surprisingly the brocollini with anchovy and cheese was quite tasty and not as fishy as I imagined. There is a good selection of cocktails and great wine. Service was great especially when it got very busy during peak dinner time. Overall it was a lovely experience and I can see why they have earned a top reputation in Melbourne's food scene. read more

Whenever I'm in Melbourne, Movida is a must go for me Food is faultless, waiters are beyond friendly, ambience is perfect. The one unfortunate thing was the Holy Goat Cheese Platter. They used to soft goats cheese but apparently that has been discontinued, and now they use this rock hard goats cheese that was really disappointing. Nonetheless I recommend this restaurant to everyone. Food is worth every penny. read more

Due to the previous yelp reviews I had high expectations for my dinner at MoVida Aqui. Unfortunately, I'd say the food is mediocre at best. We started off with the Tabla - selection of cured meats - which the server recommended. It was OK but really just a charcuterie board without the board. We also ordered the Tortilla which was different. It tasted like a potato quiche but nothing to write home about. The quail and fois gras dish (can't remember the exact name) really stood out on the menu as I love fois gras but was quite disappointing. It came in pie form and the flavour was just bland. The standout and saving grace were the Lake entrance bugs featured on the specials menu. I'm from Toronto, Canada and have never tried these buggers before but I must say I'm hooked. They were merinated quite nicely and were tender and delicious. This dish definitely bumped up this review from two-star to three-star. Overall, the experience was satisfactory but I probably won't be returning. I will, however, be on a hunt for more bugs. read more

To die for! MoVida Aqui has become my favourite spot for a tapas-style dinner. I came with a friend for dinner and we were so impressed by the service, food and atmosphere. After looking over the expansive menu we decided to order the calamari sandwich w/ basque guindilla & mayonnaise, Catalan potato bomb filled w/ chorizo, slow cooked pork w/ radicchio, grilled broccoli & spinach, an eel mousse served on a prawn crisp and the Sopa Inglesa for dessert. The service was perfect and very helpful and friendly. I couldn't ask for anything more. After ordering it seemed like no more than 2 minutes before our dishes started to arrive. Each dish was so delicious and had the perfect balance of flavours, ingredients and size-wise was spot on! The calamari sandwiches were served on mini sourdough buns w/ a gorgeous light mayonnaise and a tangy pickle. The main standouts for me were the eel mousse on prawn crisp (SO YUM!) and the Sopa Inglesa. The dessert was a 'trifle' with a small layer of softer-than-air sponge on the bottom, followed by a very thin layer of marmalade like jelly, followed by a layer of jam like jelly with strawberries, caramel, light cream and topped with hazelnuts...perfect! Bigger than the Movida Next Door, the opportunity to find a table is too. Brighter and noiser than his little brother (NextDoor); the quality of the food and the service stay as good as him. The steated bar in the middle creates a nice atmospher and especially with the waiters behind it. They dont hesitate to suggest you, informe you about the specials and take good care of you. The owner of the Movida is originaly from Spain but has been living in Australia as far as he can remember. The tapas system allow you to share each plate and enjoy different thing together or alone aswell (as I did a couple of time). You can eat australian oysters in a spanish version or spanish dishes in an australian way. I can't end this review without saying that I've been served by Pete and he has been a real sweetheart ! So many amazing things have been posted about this place and I don't see how I can differentiate my review from others but I will give it a go..... I am on a ridiculously strict diet (ketogenic, it's amazing) and cannot eat the majority of foods offered at restaurants but to my pleasant surprise I enjoyed a great afternoon session on the sparkling water and cured meats. Gestalt. If you don't know what it means, look it up. But that's what MoVida Aqui brings to the Melbourne Dining Scene. It's not just the spectacular menu, not just the variety that comes pretty much every thing with the "specials" - but the staff, the personal attention they give patrons, the ambiance, and so much more. I knew the moment I walked in the door about 1.5 years ago and saw that huge, open kitchen that I'd be a regular at MoVida....and so we are. Indeed, we try to get there every few weeks. Well, I say try - what I mean is that we've formed a slight chemical dependency to the buey and bocadillo de calamares. If my wife and I go too long without, well, it gets messy. Some of our favourites include, but most certainly are not limited to: Jamons, bocadillos de calamares, bombas, buey, the OUTSTANDING olive oil, and any one of a dozen other regular and ever-changing menu items. That's an important thing about MoVida: They don't just print a menu and it stays the same until the sun explodes. Every night there are specials, and over the year and a half we've been visiting, we've seen the regular items on the main menu change many times as well. They're .. evolving. Learning and exploring, as well as pushing the limits of new flavours and ingredients which are perhaps a bit unusual to the Melbourne foodie scene. But as I say, it's not just the food that brings us back. It's the fact that we've got to know the names of staff (and they asked ours), that they remember the last bottle of wine we got when we visited a month previous, or even just the incredible people watching that comes from the venue and layout. Mmm movida. If you live in melbourne or have visited melbourne and not been to a movida then drop everything and go. Unless you are vegan then maybe movida is not for you. I feel like you need to do three nights in a row to experience all of the movida offerings. One night to share a paella, another to eat through all of the tapas and another to share as many mains as you can fit in. The paella is everything a paella should be: crunchy rice bits with a hit of spice and lots of seafood & chorizo bits. I like the seafood one but the combination is my pick (chorizo + mussels =winning). The tapas are generally one person serves which is good if you all want to eat different things. Definite highlight is the anchovy with smoked tomato sorbet- even people who fear the delicious saltiness of an anchovy can eat this as it is so balanced with smoke/salt/savory crunch. They usually have great tapas specials for seafood so definitely check them out. The mains are all about double meat combos (veal with pancetta) and there is so much good purée and root veg goodness underneath different smoked/slow cooked/grilled meats and seafoods. The desserts, for someone like me who is not really a sweet tooth, are great to share and not too sweet. Try the small choc pistachio cigar- you can half it for one bite each a perfect addition to an après meal espresso or digestive (I prefer the cocktail digestive). read more

We visited Movida Aqui on a Monday night, not packed but a respectable crowd. I had been offered a booking at 6.30 and told we would have to be finished by 8.30. Obviously they run two sittings each night although we didn't have to worry as it was not that busy. The food here is amazing!!! The ambience is spartan with an interesting use of milk crates and an open kitchen run super efficiently like clockwork. The staff, on this night led by Allessandro, perfect, not in your face but super observant so you don't have to worry about an empty glass. We wanted to experience a selection of dishes so chose several small dishes, each one more marvellous than the last. Very hard to beat the signature dish of anchovy with tomato sorbet but they all came close. Easily our best restaurant meal in quite a while. Ole! read more

A true culinary experience though expect to leave the restaurant feeling lighter from your hip pocket. Polite, knowledgeable and attentive waiters. Friday night, date night after a long week at work. We asked for two seats by the bar which turned out to be interesting choice given the two drunk businessmen next to us debating whether they should go for "just one more" and shouting "more bread, more bread!" Inspired by this, we each tried a glass of sherry ($9) and I couldn't stop myself ordering the Spanish lager to wash down the meal. So-so for the former, YAY for the latter. We loved the scallops but found the "la bomba" ($4.5) to be a tiny weeny taco morsel. Inspired by other Yelp reviews, we ordered the beef cheek and were impressed by the portion size, texture and cauliflower puree. Great service, good location and a nice environment for groups to try lots of different food. I really enjoyed the steak dish served but felt that the 7 other courses I had were quite average and while not lacking creativity, did not have great execution and just didn't taste that great. The place is quite expensive and the booking policies are very harsh and require a credit card to book. Overall I rate this two stars because of the very high prices and fact that I only really enjoyed a couple of the dishes. (Sorbet and anchovies?? Really??) You are much better off trying some of the Japanese/ Spanish (eg. Seamstress) bars that serve tapas that all look and taste really good at realistic prices. read more

So due to my little favourite in the lane the original Movida being booked out I decide to head downtown to Aqui and wow it was worth the trip. Hidden in the NAB building is a Spanish oasis of delicious food, wine and friendly service. Tonight we had the bomba, then jamon Serrano followed by duck with figs and then the beef cheek I often have dreams about from Movida. Washed down with a couple of cheeky glasses of rosé we were talked into having dessert. Churros and the flan made it the best dinner in a long time. I don't think it gets any better in terms of Spanish in Melbourne. I am now trying to work out when this little blonde duck can head back for more duck! read more

I had a pretty amazing meal here, and I was really glad to have found this place while in Melbourne. As you know, it's tapas, so you generally share dishes and try a few bites of a wide variety of dishes. Unfortunately, I came alone, so I couldn't share. The next best solution? EAT ALL THE THINGS!!! (Kidding. I just ordered enough for a few people... but not everything.) For my big plates, I was debating whether to get the ox tongue, pork shoulder, beef cheek, or some combination of those three. The server said that the beef cheek was REALLY rich, so I should probably only get the ox tongue and maybe the pork shoulder (or vice versa). I ended up suggesting all three, and he replied that it was a lot of food and that I should only order two max. After finishing the beef cheek, I decided to go one step further and proceeded to order dessert--my neighbor at the bar ordered the churros and hot chocolate, and I LOVE that combo... so I ordered it! I finished all of the churros save for one; at that point, I felt too guilty calorie-wise. I had been dipping each churro in a bunch of hot sauce--it was just so dang rich and delicious :(. I couldn't help it. Food: Bread with olive oil and sea salt. Small 1: Tortilla Wild mushrooms, organic egg, and caramelized onion. Small 2: Bomba Catalari potato bomb filled with chorizo. Medium 1: Remolacha Organic baby beets served with fromage frais and mojama. Medium 2: Cerdo Con Alubias Blancas Braised Western Plains pork shoulder with white beans and paprika. Medium 3: Lengua Twice-cooked ox tongue with fino, carrots, and peppercorns. Medium 4: Carrillera De Buey Slowly braised beef cheek in Pedro Ximenez on cauliflower puree. Dessert: Churros Con Chocolate Spanish doughnuts with rich drinking chocolate. The food was pricey, but you're getting high-quality food for the price. This dinner was good -- very good even -- but not life-alteringly so. MoVida Aqui seem to be shooting for something a little higher than what they're achieving. It's not white-tablecloth, but nor is it casual. Between the atmosphere, the prices, and the descriptions on the menu, I would have expected something a notch better. At least the ingredients were of very high quality; it's hard to go *wrong* at that point. Bread and olive oil: the bread had a great crust and was very chewy inside. The olive oil is quite tasty. Chicago fizz: great texture on the foam and very pleasant, if uncomplicated flavor. Vieria: the scallop itself was excellent. The serrano ham was a nice contrast to both the scallop and the potato; it was nicely crisp and slightly sour. The chives are a good touch. Calling the potato "foam" is a bit of a stretch; it's just very finely mashed (or perhaps food-processed). Bomba: the fried crust is the highlight. The sauce (serrano pepper perhaps?) worked well with it. The potato and chorizo were OK-to-good. If you order this, split it open and let the insides cool for half a minute before digging in. Costilla: stuffing chorizo inside the lamb is a nice touch. The meat was cooked very nicely with good caramelization and a hint of charcoal. The sauce added very little to the dish. Ensalada: very fresh greens and thinly shaved onion with cured white tuna. The dressing was nicely sour. The salad didn't need any salt on top of what the fish provides, but was moderately salted. read more

With its warm and convivial atmosphere, incredible cuisine, engaging service and overall charm, it is a standout dining experience in Melbourne. As a hatted restaurant it ticks many boxes. As a relative to the high profile Movida in Hosier Lane, Movida Aqui keeps the same standard of excellence. Movida Aqui is a modern spacious restaurant in the heart of the CBD. (The people that work around here have some awesome culinary options.) It has large windows and is light and airy but at night there is a different intimate atmosphere. The kitchen/bar with colourful upturned milk crates holds centre stage and the ambience is also driven by a busy restaurant with loud conversation and the charm of Spanish posters/artwork. The driving force behind Movida Aqui and the Movida restaurants is Frank Comorra, who is one of Melbourne's most dynamic and creative chefs. The website explains that the larger kitchen enables Movida Aqui to do things that can restrict it in a smaller kitchen of other venues - such as preparation of the paella. Venturing into Movida Aqui one evening with my American friends, we were placed on one of the large group tables. With a group of 9 of us we found Movida Aqui to be a great option to cater for a larger group and the classy but slightly casual ambience meant that its conducive to families. My dining partners are well seasoned foodies that have tasted the best from around the world so expectation was high. Movida Aqui didn't disappoint. The dishes here are essentially to share and are some of the best tapas in the country. Some of the tapas are small and suitable for one or two people but there are larger dishes that can feed several people, notably the paellas. You need to give the staff 30 minutes or so to cook up the paellas. Everything on the menu looked amazing so it was difficult to choose. The Olives are a no brainer - different types of superb Spanish olives to get us going. Also some bread with oil. The Bombas looked spectacular and were also a great option for the children. These were so tasty and were like a croquette. We all had one of these Catalan potato bombs filled with chorizo. The creaminess of the potato was excellent to contrast against the crispy outside. And the hit of chorizo was brilliant, flavours infusing through the potato. The bomba is bliss. The Jerusalem Artichoke and organic egg tortillas were absolutely delicious and surprised. The flavours were intense and it was actually quite rich. The NT Barramundi was a special on the night and we all agreed this was also spectacular. Earlier in the night as I was making my way to Movia Aqui I had run into one of Melbourne's sharpest businesswomen who was coming from a meeting in a nearby office. After telling her I was going to Movida Aqui she had two words to say, "Beef cheek!" The Carrillera De Buey, Slowly braised beef cheek in Pedro Ximenez on Cauliflower Puree was memorable. The intensity of flavours took me by surprise. The meat was still the hero but the flavours infused in that meat were magnificent. I was looking forward to my trip to Movida Aqui, located behind the NAB tower at 500 Bourke Street, Melbourne CBD. On multiple occasions over the past few months I sat outside the restaurant and enjoyed tacos and beer at Paco's Taco's which is also owned by Movida in the courtyard. I have thought that Movida Aqui would make a good location for a relaxing lunch so it was with great expectation and pomp and circumstance when a mate was visiting from Brisbane that we booked and presented ourselves to the restaurant for a tour de force. A custom that my Dandy Warhol's loving mate and I had before enjoying a relaxing culinary experience at lunch in Brisbane was to have a cheeky pint somewhere before fine dining to warm us up. Well, in Brisbane, there usually was no reason to get any warmer so lets just say that the pint was required to get in the spirit of the afternoon. We decided to meet at The Irish Times on Little Collins Street at 11:45 AM as our booking at Movida Aqui was made for 12:15 PM. The look of consternation, if not disappointment was evident on my face when the barman stated that they can not serve alcohol until noon. This was an attack on tradition in the same way gay marraige would seemingly impact traditional marraige. Not to be outdone, we scoured the area looking for another watering hole but in the end we retreated to the restaurant on time, sullen and quite thirsty, not having satisfied our prerequisite for dining. Our assigned table was in the back corner which in my opinion was one of the best seats in the house. This allowed us not only to see what was going outside in the laneway, keep an eye on the ever-changing weather (and laugh at those running from the wind and rain) and also keep sight of the entire customer base in the restaurant. The server proved to be very efficient, thrusting menus at us as soon as we were seated and also pointing out the specials. We educated the server that we were intending to have a relaxing lunch, had no requirement to leave at any particular point and we would be ordering slowly and enjoying a fair amount of wine between the orders. This routine seemed to be out of the ordinary and we were repeatedly asked to place an order, any order, just to get it into the computer. What I found to be queer is how quickly dishes were brought out as soon as they were placed into the computer. Given the "efficiency" if you look at it positively, a lunch time diner could plough through many dishes and a bottle of wine in an hour considering the dishes seem to be pre-made and considering the efficiency of service. I would return to Movida Aqui however I would not intend for the visit to be a long affair. As articulated in the e-mail which I am pasting below, which was sent to Movida after my experience, long relaxing lunches should be experienced elsewhere. There are some dishes and obviously wine that I was not able to try on the last visit and look forward to the next occasion where I can power through the food and beverage with impunity. Movida Aqui is the third and much roomier installment of the Movida Tapas chain, but is equally as popular. I was lucky enough to get a table because a friend booked three months in advance. We ordered the $75 banquet meal (if you have 6 or more people this is the only option), which consists of a selection of 7 small dishes of the kitchen's daily choice. It goes without saying that the meal was fantastic, which is both to be expected of Movida's prodigious reputation and the price paid for the meal. Although I must say there were a number of clunky flavour combinations in several of the courses, scattered amongst some truly fantastic dishes. The biggest disappointment was the Paella which lacked intense flavour and was served with a pretty ordinary salad on the side, which consisted of a few lettuce leaves in a boring dressing and counted as one of the 7 courses on it's own. Overall I must say that the food was pretty good. I would definitely say that Movida Aqui is worth checking out. The wine list is fantastic and the staff all very attentive and knowledgeable. read more

Have been previously and enjoyed the food. Last Friday for a late lunch, I took a corporate client in who is vegetarian. As there is no menu out the front, I entered the restaurant to ask to see one. The waiter briefly greeted me then proceeded to mock me for not knowing anything about the restaurant or what they had on the menu. I then asked what vegetarian options are on the menu to which the same staff member retorted immediately "we hate vegetarians!" before then pointing out the 2-3 meagre options available for vegetarians. Absolutely unsuitable behaviour by front of house staff. Not only had I been here many times before but I was attempting to introduce a new client to this venue. Slow braised beef check is always a highlight. Already named it as my last meal on earth option. Serrano ham just melts in your mouth and the potato bombs are too delicious to just stop at one. I've eaten at the Sydney movida and Aqui matches it hands down. Price wise it's on the steep side buts its definitely worth it. read more

MoVida Aqui is my place to go for Spanish tapas. MoVida generally requires a reservation as the food is so good. There is a large bar and itis loud and lively. We sat at a table and ordered a wide assortment of items to share. We started with Anchoa, which are hand filleted anchovies with tomato sorbet, and Bombas followed by Bocadillo De Calamares. They were delicious. The Carrilla De Buey, which is beef cheek braised in Pedro Ximenez set on cauliflower puree was a melt in your mouth dish and absolutely wonderful. We followed it up with Churros served with caramel sauce. We will definately return here to enjoy the flavors and excitement of this wonderful place. read more

I'' start this by saying that I rate the food and wine here big time. Sadly, the food and wine was supremely tainted by the less than ideal service we had. I completely get the in at 6pm out by 8pm rule and am cool with it.. The particular waitress we had was not and did not understand the joys of personal boundaries and just generally being aware of social cues. We ended up arriving early like 530, plenty of time to share a few plates, swill a few vinos and be on our merry way.. But no, from 6.10 we were asked every 2 minutes what food we wanted. We politely said we hadn't looked at the menu, you know, because Christmas catch ups and chatting.. But it became relentless to the point we rush ordered and then felt unsatisfied (that aside the calamari rolls are so bloody moreish).. Without going into all the details, we were interrupted, spoken to rudely and then pretty much vacated, all pretty disappointing stuff.. There was a beacon of hope at the end when we were attended to by a lovely gent, but by then we were all over it. It's not like this place is a cheap and cheerful , it can be taxing on your dining dollar for sure, I kinda expected more. read more
