With just a small reduction in excitement, I would like to see how he delivers news as well.

Formal Complaint of Discrimination, Bias, and Mistreatment of Stranded Veteran at WLOS Asheville,…read moreNorth Carolina TO: Christopher S. Ripley (President & CEO of Sinclair Broadcast Group). The WLOS Vice President and General Manager's first name is Courtney (Courtney Youngblood). Ms. Youngblood, I am writing to you directly to bring to your immediate attention a shocking display of prejudice, journalistic misconduct, and complete ignorance of federal law at your station, WLOS. I have been actively reaching out to your station since Tuesday, and for nearly a week, your newsroom has deliberately turned a blind eye to my crisis. I am a permanently disabled Veteran, a wheelchair user with a complete loss of my legs and lower extremities, and a 34-year Veteran Advocate whose work has been featured nationally in the Huffington Post and Stars and Stripes. Other Sinclair-owned stations across the country have covered my dedication to veterans in the past, which makes the cruel, dismissive treatment I received from WLOS Asheville even more shocking and offensive. I traveled here from Georgia to attend my very first medical appointment at the Asheville VAMC and to secure a private residence for my permanent relocation here at the end of August. I am extremely ill; the blood work results from my appointment just came back very bad, and I am fighting for my health. Instead of being allowed to focus on my medical care, my life and relocation have been completely upended because I was systemically targeted, discriminated against, and failed--first by Delta Air Lines, then by Loyalty Transportation (who ignored my emails and calls for over a month before my trip), and finally by Asheville Rides Transit (ART). Because of this total transit failure, tomorrow I will be completely stranded with absolutely nowhere to go. I have a safe apartment back in Georgia, but I am being blocked from a way to get back to it. I have exhausted my limited disability funds on hotel rooms just to survive this week, and tomorrow I face the terrifying reality of being completely homeless, left out to sleep on the ground in a mobility wheelchair because your station claims a critically ill veteran being illegally denied transit is "not newsworthy." When I reached out to WLOS for help, a woman in your newsroom flatly told me you "could do nothing," sat in judgment of me, and %blatantly misquoted federal law%, claiming that service dogs are required to have paperwork. Let me be unmistakably clear on the facts, the federal law, and the active investigation your station ignored: The Law on Service Animals: Under Title II and Title III of the ADA, it is strictly illegal to require registration, documentation, or paperwork for a service dog. Mandating that a service dog be placed in a crate to ride public transit is a direct federal violation. Official Complaints Filed: I have already successfully filed formal civil rights complaints against both ART and the City of Asheville with the government entities that protect disabled individuals. Federal Eyewitness Investigation: A U.S. Department of Transportation official was on the phone with me and firsthand overheard the disrespectful, unprofessional, and illegal behavior of the ART supervisor and bus driver. I have filed a formal complaint with him, and he is officially attaching his firsthand witness notes to my federal report. Imminent Legal Action: Several civil rights attorneys have already contacted me. We are moving forward immediately with a formal lawsuit against the City of Asheville and ART. The Reality of My Medical Needs: My 7-year PTSD service dog is trained to bark whenever I have a panic attack, go into a dissociation/blackout, or when my heart stops. ART workers penalized my dog for doing his medical job, claiming he isn't real, and an ART driver ambushed and barred me on Goodwill property, which isn't even a bus stop. This happened despite the fact that we had already ridden 4 ART buses earlier and waited for over an hour twice in the transit center with zero issues. For WLOS staff to look at a disabled, critically ill Black veteran in a wheelchair, refuse to report on a documented federal investigation, and spread illegal misinformation makes me seriously question if I am being singled out because of my race and my disability. Your newsroom showed a complete lack of empathy and a total disregard for a life-threatening situation. WLOS has brought shame upon its reputation and the Sinclair network. I expect an immediate and thorough review of the bias, professionalism, and legal literacy of your Asheville newsroom staff. Sincerely, Lisa Groves Disabled Veteran 34 Year Veterans Advocate Featured in Huffington Post, Stars and Stripes, Essence Magazine.
