We just had Mountain Magic Catering (MMC) cater our wedding at The Gatekeeper's Museum this past Sunday. While we did have an issue arise, Peter and Martha quickly made it right again which is why I decided to give a 5 star review regardless of the oversight. Searching for a caterer for my wedding was a difficult feat because I have so many food allergies and intolerances that it makes it a little more difficult to cook for me. I really wanted to have a meal that I would be able to enjoy, and MMC was able to make that happen. So, if you have food allergies or concerns, I would 100% recommend them since they are so accommodating in this sense. The initial email I received from them explaining everything they do for a wedding was a little overbearing and confusing, but eventually I made sense of it all. Martha is a funny character and always made me smile after talking on the phone, mostly due to her very random tangents. They sent us a menu to choose options from, and there was a fair amount of different options to select. We were nervous about the fact that they don't offer tastings, but we did end up walking by another event of theirs before our wedding and the food smelled great so we were relieved. All of the food we had at the wedding was great! It wasn't your typical boring wedding food. Peter really knows what he is doing flavor- wise, and I was so happy that he was able to cook everything in a manner that I could still enjoy. We ended up getting our desserts catered by them too, we had lemon bars, chocolate dipped strawberries, and puff pastry with peach. All of these were a hit and ended up working out so that we didn't end up with a bunch of cake left over at the end of the night like people usually do. Martha made the lemon bars with white rice flour so I could have them and they were so yummy. In the end, everyone really enjoyed the food we had at our wedding. I do think it would be smart for them to add gratuity into their contract that way it is clear to couples what MMC is expecting. We were following the tipping guide from our wedding coordinator for tips, but they wanted more which caused a bit of an upset with my dad. A wedding is not the place to be discussing tip amounts, especially with the father of the bride. Regardless, things were made right and I appreciate that. I am glad we chose MMC. Mountain Magic fed me 3 meals in a 24 hour time period and every one of them was interesting, unexpected and delicious! I'll admit, walking into the rehearsal dinner of my friend's wedding, I was nervous. First, it was in the middle of a hotel parking log (in a tent), but beyond that, the hotel didn't have a restaurant, which meant the caterer was cooking on whatever they brought with them! Well, that included a 3-burner Camp Chef stove and a trailer that held all the plates, silverware, and equipment. In other words, they didn't bring much! It takes some real talent and a whole lotta careful planning to pull off the meals they served while working with so little. Everything they served was packed with interesting flavor, and the menus worked out so well. The rehearsal dinner and brunch stand out in my mind as exceptional examples. A taco bar can be expected or it can be elevated, and this was definitely the latter offering richly marinaded meats cooked perfectly, served with warm tortillas, homemade salsas, and more. As for the brunch, all I can remember is that the spread was massive and included some items that I couldn't believe were being executed so well from a 3-burner Camp Chef out back. All in all, I left the wedding excited to write this review and totally spaced on it until I came across them again while researching new caterers for Home Away From Home 2018! Wedding was 7/6/22 at Kehlet Mansion in Meeks Bay and food was buffet style. We are so pleased with our experience with Mountain Magic Catering. They were our biggest question mark for the wedding since we do not live in the area and were not able to taste the food ahead of time, but it was absolutely amazing. They responded promptly to emails, helped us pick a fully gluten-free menu (even the cupcakes!), were on time with the food, had a beautiful set-up, delicious food, were great with guests, and even saved us a couple hor-dourves so we could try them after photos. We had multiple guests with Celiac and they were wonderful about our concerns. One of our guests is very sensitive to cross contamination, and they (and everyone else) felt great afterwards. They packaged the leftovers for us and when we brought them out a couple nights later, our family was lining up to have some more of the tri-tip and the sauteed mushrooms (my personal favorite was the eggplant lasagna, but there weren't any leftovers of that). My only note is they did put a 20% gratuity onto the final bill, but I had seen another review mention that, so we were already budgeting for it. They did such an amazing job we would have tipped the same regardless. We had a "forest party" rehearsal dinner in Homewood, CA with eats supplied by Mountain Magic. The food was excellent - trip tip, chicken with mole sauce, salads (green salad dressing got raves!) for the first 20 family members and then appetizers (small turkey sandwiches - raves) and deserts (everyone raved about the lemon squares!) for the 60 attending after the initial dinner. It was a convoluted request of menus that they followed to a tea! Recently came from a multi day event. Absolutely amazing. At no point was the vegetarian/Vegan fare made to feel an after thought.

This business is extremely unprofessional and difficult to work with. We spoke to them about doing a tasting, and they offered us to come to someone else's wedding to taste some of their appetizers. We thought it was odd, but because it was a good price and they have good reviews we thought we would try to see the event and setup and go from there. I e confirmed 5 days before the event that we could stop by and they have us a time to come. An hour and 15 minutes before we were to arrive we texted to confirm, but did not get a response. When we arrived they informed us that our wedding date (1 year out) was booked. They then blamed us for driving the hour distance to try the tasting and not confirm 1-2 days ahead (again, we had confirmed 5 days ahead of time). read more

Peter, Martha and staff are friendly and easy to work with on all levels: menus, pricing and location. My wife and I had our wedding reception at the Tahoe Yacht Club in Tahoe City last weekend and despite the drizzly and chilly weather, they were able to present a fantastic spread for around 60 people that was a visual delight and incredibly tasty! The appetizer table started things off with a variety of hard and soft cheeses, dips and crackers, roasted garlic bulbs, cured meats and sausages and fresh fruit served on rustic granite slabs. Next up were the main courses with marinated and grilled Tri-Tip steaks, Tuscan chicken breasts, eggplant lasagna (for the veges), roasted potatoes with garlic and rosemary, pasta with artichoke hearts, baby spinach, feta and herbs and a colorful mixed baby greens salad with balsamic vinaigrette. Dessert topped the dining experience off with an assortment of small raspberry cheese cakes, Meyers Lemon bars and the "best ever" caramel, chocolate and toasted pecan tart triangles that were "out of this world" good! Our guests loved our party but I think they raved about how good the food was all night! I would highly recommend Mt. Hiring Mountain Magic was hands down one of the best things I did for my wedding. Peter and Martha are a dream to work with. I cannot recommend Mountain Magic Catering highly enough. They catered our wedding this summer at the Gate Keeper in North Lake Tahoe and the food was impeccable-- fresh, flavorful, just delicious. I didn't know that people reached out to the bride and groom to compliment them on the wedding food, as I for sure never have (maybe I haven't had a memorable wedding meal). Yet, we've had at least a dozen people reach out to tell us that our food was flat out amazing, the best wedding meal they've had. From the apps, to the summer salad, eggplant lasagna, tri-tip and halibut, everything was a hit! Hint, family style is the way to go! Beyond the food, Mountain Magic was great end to end. They were extremely well priced and fair. I spent time on the phone with Peter to navigate the menu and make the right decisions for our wedding. He was patient, genuine and helpful! The food is really great - we got resounding comments all night long (From SF foodies, nonetheless). I have two reasons that I gave this review as three stars- I was contemplating 2, but the food was just too good. 1) Business skills and communication. 2) Bartender (as the catering company, they hired all of the staff for our event). Point 1: Peter and his partner Martha don't run a very good business. As a bride, the last thing you need is your emails to go unanswered by your caterer for 7-10 days 3 weeks before your wedding. We also did not get the dessert we thought we had asked for- it was our fault, but I was surprised to find out AT MY WEDDING. We were later told we had not confirmed it - I didn't know there was anything to confirm. I later looked back at our 7-page menu/ invoice pdf and found buried in text a one word "confirm?" in the text describing the dessert. Our fault, I admit. Still, I had brought up this specific dessert a few days prior to the wedding and their response NEVER indicated that they were unsure that we wanted it.. All we needed was a simple follow-up "Hey, you mentioned you wanted this... we don't have it confirmed". Point 2: the bar tender was really bad. We supplied all of the alcohol for the wedding, and when we went through the leftovers, we found our two bottles of bitters unopened. Our signature drink was a Manhattan. Its possible that he never found them, but then all they had to do was ask any number of the bridal party, myself or my husband, to confirm whether or not we had any. Also, to my annoyance, both my husband and I had emphasized to Martha how important it was to have a good bartender - we fresh-squeezed (by hand) all of our citrus juices, had purchased good mixers and middle-top shelf liquors- but we still got someone who didn't know how to make a manhattan. Clearly my concerns fell on deaf ears. To sum up: food is really, really good. Peter and Martha, not the best business people and have fairly poor communication skills, but perfectly nice all the same. The bartender was terrible. read more

Peter and his staff were great! We hired him to cater the cocktail hour of our wedding at Sugar Pine Point and he and his staff did an excellent job. The food was delicious--I'm bummed I only got to sample a few appetizers. They were so popular they flew off the trays! The cheese display looked delicious, but again by the time our photos were over our guests had devoured it. The bar tenders were so thoughtful, they brought over a tray of champagne to the wedding party while we were on the dock getting our pictures taken. I attended a wedding catered by this company earlier this summer and I was blown away by the food, the service, and the esthetic of everything they offer. This company deserves every last YELP star. They understand how to really match the majesty of a beautiful wedding by providing probably some of the most beautiful and tasty hor d'oeuvres I've ever been served (the best was the Organic Smoked Mesquite Chicken with a drizzle of chipotle). Mountain Magic catered our wedding on 8/8/15 and had everybody talking about how amazing the food was! They were one of our first hires for the wedding and we could not be happier. They were easy to communicate with and helped us put together a delicious Mexican food menu that was within our limited budget. Peter, the head chef, sent us an extensive list of options for the appetizers, sides and main courses. We met with Martha, the lead coordinator, a few months before the wedding to talk about the menu and go over all of the services they would provide the day of. They provided the full catering staff, including licensed bartenders, and took care of the clean up after the dinner. Both Martha and Peter were very responsive to all of our questions and made sure we had everything we needed for our wedding. The dinner was great! Not only was the presentation of the buffet great, the flavors of the food were so tasty! The meats at the fajita bar were great and all the different salsa options were to die for. I came across these guys by chance when running by.. and I'm so thankful that I went in to get their card and wound up hiring them to cater our wedding. I'll start out by saying we never actually tried any food from Mountain Magic and from other reviews it would probably be great. Our wedding plans, like many couples, were turned upside down from the coronavirus and our original wedding venue closed down and canceled our date. After an extensive search to find other venues that were available we ultimately decided to change plans and have a small wedding in our backyard. Their policy was a nonrefundable deposit so we tried to work with them see if they would move locations to cater the backyard wedding. First they said they did not have a kitchen so could not support the event (and would still not agree to refund the deposit), then they said our guest count was too small, then they said they didn't have a license in Nevada. When they finally agreed to cater (and suddenly required a minimum fee that was never disclosed before) and we went to confirm with them, they said they had already booked our wedding date with someone else because we had discussions of possibly changing our date when our original venue closed. This was a month before our wedding after we had the date booked for a year, and we were left without a caterer, our deposit, and the reality is they seemed to make up excuse after excuse to get out of doing it. Bottom line - make sure you ask for and sign a contract with clear terms and dates. We never did and definitely regret it. read more

We booked Mountain Magic for our wedding at the Ehrman Mansion in the Sugar Pine Point State Park, and we had many, many guests tell us that it was the best food that they have ever had at a wedding. The santa maria tri tip steak + chimichurri sauce was especially flavorful, as was the mixed greens salad with walnut, apple, dried cherries, gorgonzola, and balsamic (it sounds so simple, but believe me it was fantastic). Beyond the food itself (which was amazing), the price was very reasonable, especially given the "Tahoe premium" that most vendors apply. All in all, I would absolutely recommend Mountain Magic for anyone's next event in the Tahoe area. read more

We hired Mountain Magic Catering for our July wedding in Tahoe. The food was delicious and we got a lot of compliments from our guests. However, the great tasting food could not make up for the bad attitudes, disrespect, and lack of service we experienced. First, it was almost near impossible to get a hold of MMC while planning our wedding. The last month before the wedding, my fiance and I tried calling them 4 times each after they failed to respond to any of our emails. From a bride's perspective, planning a wedding can be overwhelming and stressful. It does not help to have a vendor completely disregard your attempt to communicate and answer any questions or concerns. I understand summer is peak wedding season, however, my fiance and I should not have had to email and call multiple times. In fact, after weeks of trying to contact them, we were unable to talk to them until the actual day of the wedding. We met with Martha in May to finalize details about the wedding. She assured me that they would "set the tables from the linen up." She told me that I could drop off any center pieces to the caterer as well as anything else we wished to be set up on the table and that MMC would gladly set them out for us. In one of my unanswered emails, I asked Peter where I should drop off all of the center pieces and favors, which were to be set at each place setting. The day of the wedding, my mom and my maid of honor dropped off the boxes to Peter. He rudely exclaimed that he had no idea what we were doing. He said that MMC never sets up tables, that they never would have agreed to doing so, and that he could not help us. He was incredibly offensive and disrespectful to both my mom and my maid of honor, who then had to run around for almost an hour setting up the tables. In our contract, MMC agreed to do a champagne toast as well as include cake cutting services. Neither were provided. When we asked about the champagne toast, they replied that they knew nothing about it. At the time, my bridesmaids had to run around and pour everyone their drink. When it came time to cut and serve the cake, once again, did not provide any services. We asked them to help and I was informed that their servers simply walked away. So my friends and bridesmaids had to cut the cake and pass pieces out to our guests. Finally, after emailing and calling multiple times to request a final invoice, (all of which went unanswered) my fiance sent in a check. He estimated an amount larger than he expected we owed. Finally, we were able to get a hold of Martha on the phone to ask her what our final invoice was and how much change we would get back. We later found out that they edited the invoice. All of the extra money we had overpaid they put towards an overly- exaggerated gratuity. When we told them that we wanted to leave a different amount for gratuity, they became very angry. We did not think they deserved or earned over a 20% gratuity, especially after failing to provide several services that we had agreed upon. Overall, I would not recommend MMC. The food was amazing, however, dealing with this company's poor business skills and even more horrendous communication is not worth it. read more

Cancellation three weeks before the event?! Peter came highly recommended and seems like a nice guy. I'm sure his food is excellent. But his service needs to improve. We sent him a deposit three months before our rehearsal dinner, and he said he was going to have to "pass/cancel" on our event three weeks before its arrival. The only reason I didn't give one star was because he came back a week and a half before the wedding and said he had found the staff once again to support the event. I'm helping a friend plan her wedding right now and it reminded me of how amazing the food was at our wedding, so I wanted to share with everyone else. The food was so good I wish I could go back to my wedding as a guest and be able to really enjoy the food. People who were at our wedding still comment on how good the food was, even 4 years later! Peter and his crew are AWESOME!!!! I feel like I put this man through the wringer being a crazy bride trying to do too much at once... and as cheaply as possible without losing quality. Mountain Magic fits that description perfectly. He worked with my budget to create a menu that all my guests enjoyed thoroughly and even let me add and subtract services to suit our needs. We had a "destination" wedding at Sand Harbor, and I was so glad to find a healthy, organic, tasty company who was familiar with the site and it's oddities. They set up their mobile kitchen/grill and did their work off to the side of our reception area staying as unobtrusive as possible. I'm so glad I got a recommendation from a hs friend who used them for her wedding and I'm so glad we used them for ours!!! This review would most definitely be five stars if not for a couple of things, which I'll get to in a second. First, Peter's food was fantastic. Peter only cooks with high-quality fresh ingredients. Many of the people at our wedding were bay-area foodies, and were blown away with the food. The only problems, were, one, he sprung on us after the reception that we owed a 20% tip (we were unaware of this before hand, so it was a bit of a shock when the original bill was $6,000 (His prices are very reasonable, by the way). Also, his bartender was just awful. He was messy, grumpy and was seen complaining, and arguing on multiple occasions with the staff. If you're getting married in Tahoe, I wouldn't hesitate to use Mountain Magic. The bottom line is their food is simple, fresh, and of very high quality. read more

I can not say more than what a huge dissapointment it was working with Peter at Magic Mountain Catering. We had originally chosen them because I had like working with them so much and read great reviews. I was wrong. We were supposed to have our wedding in July 2012 in Lake Tahoe. About 2 weeks after booking and 11 months before the event, we had to cancel because of an emergency. We tried to work with Peter to get part of our deposit back given the circumstances. I was not that he would not give it back but more the words he used. He said, and I quote, "Even if your whole family died so you could not have the wedding, you would never see you deposit back." It was a reminder that the wedding industry really is an industry, not human. read more

I find the response by Peter to my review comical as it further illustrates the frustrations of trying to team with MMC. It is fair to say that we hired MMC and not just Peter. But don't forget that we also hired Martha separately, and the fact that she only served as a representative of MMC and not as the day of coordinator (which by her own definition includes extensive lead-in consultation and planning activities) further demonstrates the overall frustrations we faced. This response and review is based on our experiences working with both Martha and Peter (there is not a separate business page for Weddings by Martha) and I would further iterate my recommendation to not work with either of them. I understand not all working relationships end positively, but after we reached out to Martha post-wedding, never once did MMC or Martha acknowledge feedback or take responsibility, and instead turned to attack our guests and lack of planning. Never once was this planning raised as an issue before the wedding, in fact we were continuously complimented on our organization and vision. Peter is strong at the behind the scenes food work but our difficulties lay in the client facing interactions and lack of coordination with his wife, who was paid separately, specifically for this role. Peter's memory of events is clearly different: -The wedding overall was fully on budget, not that Peter or Martha would have known since that information was never shared with them. The only out of budget expenses related to catering and Martha's coordination services. His attack on our emotions, vision, etc., are uncalled for and show a lack of professionalism. I again point to the fact that timeline hadn't changed in many months and had Martha and Peter communicated, the increases in the end would not have been a surprise. -We never once said we wanted only beer/wine at the reception, which is why at the first meeting we asked to increase the bar services. I'm not surprised by his incorrect recollection because during our initial meeting, he actually left the room and asked Martha to handle the discussions. -The 'designated' person that was supposed to retrieve and transfer the leftover food was Martha, the wife of Peter, which is why she had the car keys to transfer the food to the designated vehicle. This is just further evidence where they failed to follow through on promises. -While Peter and Martha did respond to most emails, they didn't systematically answer all questions which required a series of follow ups where I would copy/paste previous questions. They also took a long time to respond, and my personal expectation is that there would have been some efficiency in at least acknowledging questions. -The site has full electricity, so his statements are just inaccurate in his response. But his misunderstanding makes sense since he wasn't actually at the wedding location. Additionally, no other rental companies complained about driving down the same road provided to MMC to set up. I will say that MMC was actually one of the reasons we booked the park location in the first place because they said they had catered numerous events there for up to 300 people. MMC was our first decision in planning the wedding and only after did we reach out to the park. But after our only on-site visit with Martha (not MMC) it was clear they had not catered there in a while or at least didn't have a true vision to communicate as to how set up would take place. The location of where MMC would set up was discussed in May (for a September wedding) with Martha, further evidenced by Martha's own site drawing showing MMC in the location agreed to. It wasn't until one month before the wedding that the space was raised as an issue by MMC. I do not doubt the staff worked very hard and there is a lot of behind the scenes prep taking place, our complaints sit entirely with Martha and Peter's lack of follow-through, mis-communications, and business practices. Mountain Magic Catering was so easy to work with and made all of our wedding weekend wishes come true. I'm so thankful we were able to book them for both our Welcome BBQ and Wedding. It was so nice to work with Peter to organize both events, and he took such good care of us! Loaning us items for the BBQ buffet on Friday and taking care of absolutely everything on our wedding day from set-up to clean-up. Our Welcome BBQ was delivered and set-up in a timely manner and was delicious. They took care of our few vegan guests by including a whole extra dish for us all to enjoy! And we're all still trying to recreate their delicious brownies! On Saturday, they took care of the complete table set-up including place-cards and favors! Everything looked beautiful when I arrived to walk down the aisle. Even better than I had imagined! The food was incredible! And I loved the servers who continued to go out of their way to find me and make sure I was able to sample all the yummy apps. They continued to amaze me, as they monitored our family style dinner service making sure everyone had access to all the delicious food! I really can't recommend Mountain Magic Catering strongly enough. Let them take care of everything! read more

Seriously people: if you have an event at Tahoe go with Mountain Magic. The team at Mountain Magic knocked the ball out of the field for our wedding. Despite a few quirky requests on our part (we wanted wine made by a friend, a cake from Tartine in SF and goat roasted by a local hero) Mountain Magic beautifully made our special day happen with a menu that resonated with our choices.
