My family has been spending Thanksgiving day at Mountain Jacks for the past few years as well as many other celebrations. We used to love going there but have noticed a down hill slide recently. But this thanksgiving was the last straw for us. It started with a server that we couldn't hear and mumbled. Then with the salad course, we all got the table side dinner and within a few bites a large bug crawled out of one of the salads. At which point we stopped eating and notified the server. A lady came out to the table, did not introduce herself, blamed the bug on the lettuce provider and offered the 1 person that found the bug a replacement for the salad. The meals were all just okay, nothing special like we had previously been excited for here. And after good desserts, we asked for the bill. Nothing was comped. Now I'm not normally one to expect that, but when there is a bug in the food, COME ON! This situation was very poorly handled and a great disappointment for a place well known for being above par in the area. read more

Mountain Jacks was one of the first restaurants we visited when we moved to Lafayette about two years ago, and we were favorably impressed. Nice atmosphere, and pretty good food. Unfortunately, it seems that all that remains is the nice atmosphere. Relatives were visiting and we decided to visit this weekend but we were not very happy. On the plus side, the service was good, the table side salad was good, and the side dishes were good. What was NOT good was our steaks. Tough as an old boot. That was both mine, and the wife's. My guess is that due to the rising cost of beef, the restaurant is ordering a much lower grade than in the past to keep prices in line. Personally, I'd rather pay the price and have a good steak, than to gnaw on an old piece of leather. read more

I ordered a New York strip steak medium rare that came out medium to well done. It was impossible to cut and was half gristle. Flavor was good but the cut was very disappointing. The sides were the best part. read more

Were in Lafayette to visit Purdue and stayed overnight. The hotel recommended Mountain Jacks & it was nearby, so we tried it. The atmosphere is not the greatest, but the food and service were excellent. Wish I remembered our waiters name, he was attentive and had a great sense of humor! We had the spicy shrimp and potato skin appetizers, they give you fresh, hot bread as well. The made at your table salad bar was a nice addition with a lot of toppings to choose from. I had the black and blue ribeye, medium. It was excellent. My son had the lamb chops....they gave him 4....and he said they were very good. You get 2 sides with your dinner, plus the soup or salad. More than enough for even a large appetite .....like my husband, who almost couldn't finish his meal. The wine list do pretty good and the drinks from the bar are made very well. Overall, I would highly recommend Mountain Jacks if you are in the lafayette area looking for a nice dinner. Prices were reasonable for what you get. read more

Went there tonight. After the hostess sat the group in front of me she asked me how many in my party. I told her one. She looked at her map and asked me if I minded sitting at the bar. I said no problem. Instead of taking me there she told me which way to go. When I got to the bar I saw that it was full, turned around, and then proceeded to leave. I would have thought she would have walked me over to the bar, saw it was full, and then proceed to get me a table. I guess since I was not in a large group they did not need my business. I won't be returning there. read more

We spent our anniversary here. Very romantic. Great service. Food was amazing and they have a fabulous dirty martini WITH OLIVES THAT WERE STUFFED WITH BLEU CHEESE!! Amazing!! Great place to go to celebrate something special or just to have a great steak! read more

THIS WAS THE WORST DINING EXPERIENCE I HAVE HAD IN THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS. For starters the hostess was completely rude to us, and I could hear her talking about how much she disliked her job. My boyfriend ordered the stuffed filet that everyone has been raving about and ordered it medium. It came back completely raw like it was seared for 30 seconds on each side, dripping in blood and completely inedible. He also ordered a side of crab legs, which were undercooked, dry (how can crab meat be dry) and tasted absolutely disgusting. I ordered the lamb chops cooked medium, which were prepared horribly and consisted completely of gristly fat and small amount of completely raw meat. I will say that our server was very nice but THIS WAS THE WORST MEAL I HAVE HAD IN YEARS. I had a burger at Burger King prepared better than my meal last night. NEVER GOING BACK EVER AND YOU SHOULDN'T EITHER. read more

First time visiting this restaurant. It's a classic steakhouse, a notch above the chain steakhouses for sure both in quality and price. The salad and bread were excellent. My meal came out wrong though. Steak was undercooked and one of the sides was incorrect. They fixed it fairly quickly though. The au gratin potatoes were rustic and very good. read more

The ambiance is cozy, with multiple fireplaces going. The menu is pretty traditional surf and turf, but the steaks are cooked and seasoned well. The tableside salad bar is kinda fun, but the ingredients are not particularly fresh or interesting. The service, however, was excellent. Our waiter was attentive without being ever-present, and the manager even came to welcome our table. Over all, a great place to dine read more

Got the ribeye, which was very tasty. Standard issue baked potato and broccoli. Was carry out so I missed the table side salad but was given the salad ingredients I requested and it was good. Boiled egg would have been a nice touch. Bread was tasty as well. Nice upscale atmosphere with polite service. read more

Reserved our table more than a week ahead. Service was super slow - we end of spending 2 hours in the restaurant (most of time just waiting). The waitress didn't pay enough attention and made us feel totally ignored (probably too busy...) The lobster tail was very hard to chew... read more

Great table side salad, but I think the menu is overpriced for the quality of the food. New York strip is so so, kind of a thin cut, prime rib is good. Nice quiet place read more

We were directed here by the hotel that we were staying at. After a 3 hour drive a nice sit down meal sounded wonderful. We walked over after checking in at our Hotel at 9pm. We walked in and the hostess was talking to an older gentleman that appeared to be a manager or owner. He looked at us, but did not say anything to us, neither did the hostess. My wife and daughter went to the ladies room. And I told the hostess there would be four in the party. She looked at me and asked if there would be any kids. Ok, I was standing their with my family when we first walked in, no other parties were present, and she directed my wife and daughter to the ladies room. She asked if we wanted to wait or be seated as they were in the ladies room. I asked to be seated. This is where it went down hill. The first impression was uninviting, but after being seated at the table it went to cold. Several servers walked past our table and made eye contact, but quickly turned their heads. The older gentleman walked past back to the kitchen area without acknowledging us, another lady dressed nicely walked past and into the kitchen without acknowledging us as well. The restaurant at tops was 1/3 full on a Friday night. The food looked amazing that was on the menu and being served to the other two tables in our section. But unfortunatley after a 15 minute wait and no acknowledgement at our table, we left. Just a simple we are busy I will be with you shortly would have been appreciated. As we left the Hostess looked confused at us. I stated that we were leaving because nobody came to our table after a 15 minute wait. She shrugged her shoulders and nodded. No apology our attempt to recover the customer. We left and went to Arby's, the drive thru person was pleasant and pleasantly surprised when we tipped him what we planned on spending at Mountain Jack's. Maybe next time we are in Lafayette we will try again. read more

We have been here about 3 or 4 times. Tonight was exceptional. We have always had ridiculously helpful service here. Not sure if we have just been lucky, but I was a server for about 6 years and still never worked with people this helpful/knowledgeable/attentive. The prime rib of course is remarkable, but for the first time, I got the ribeye. Medium rare with a side of peppercorn sauce as recommended by a server. Cooked to perfection and unbelievably flavorful. The green beans are so garlic-y and delicious and the mashed potatoes were just great. One of my favorite dining experiences in Lafayette. read more

What's happened to my favorite steakhouse? New management? New chefs? First, we could not sit where we always sit. You have to have a reservation to sit in a booth in the bar. Whatever! What the hell happened to their iconic Prime Rib? It had no flavor. The au jus was red wine vinegar! This was a special evening out, 30 year anniversary. Disappointed! read more

Mountain Jack's is my go-to steak place in the Lafayette area. The steaks, salads, and ranch dressing at this place are as good or better than any other steak house I've been to (including stupid expensive places in Chicago). I highly recommend stopping into this place for a splurge dinner or special occasion. read more

Wow, the food at mountain Jack's is heavenly! Ok, first I will say that this place needs a major update, or at least a very good cleaning top to bottom. But after the food arrived I stopped caring about all that! I had the forest mushroom chicken which melted in my mouth, my husband had the ribeye which he said was cooked to perfection. We talked to the couple seated next to us, who were regulars, and they said to be sure to order the fillet when Wayne is working, he's a master chef! The table side salad bar was unique, fresh and delicious and our server couldn't have been any better, he was so friendly and really went the extra mile. The only problem with this place is that we live too far away! We discovered this gem passing through on our way to Indianapolis, and we can't wait to pass through again! read more

First time here. Great service. Wonderful steak. Black and bleu ribeye so awesome. Thank you everyone.

Atmosphere was pleasant. Steak flavor was good, but way under cooked. Steamed vegetables were hard and barely cooked. Salad was fresh. Deserts were poor. Better deserts at Walmart bakery. Service was about C- to D+ level. Way, way too expensive. Don't ever plan to return. read more

Friday July 28 2017. We were excited to see a Mountain Jacks after driving all day. Because we changed time zones, it was an hour later than our usual time. We realized it was nearing closing time so as we walked in the door, we asked if they were closed or still serving. The person at the front door cheerfully told us to come on it. It was all down hill from there. We were treated with the most disrespect from our male server that I have ever experienced (only 2 left at that time). He ignored our requests, talked over us and reached across the table, in front of us, several times. I realize he was pissed cuz he had to stay later but that was not our fault. Never again! read more

Excellent first time experience at Mountain Jacks!! We didn't have reservations for parent's weekend but they were able to accommodate our family of 4 with a 40 minute wait. As soon as we sat down our terrific waiter (Eric??) came by and took our drink order. We said we were very hungry and he immediately brought us warm bread. We ordered the calamari which was delivered to our table in record time and unbelievably delicious. It was lightly fried, tender and mixed with some yummy peppers and onions. We all ordered steak and everything was prepared perfectly. I love that salad and two sides are included with the meal! My sons had Caesar salads and my husband and I had the table side salad. They were wonderful and fresh. We ordered the mile high pie for dessert and devoured it immediately. We loved this place and we're glad we discovered it during our son's freshman year. Will definitely return!! read more

Avoid if you can..the table side salad and potato skins were the best parts of the meal. Unseasoned filet and barely warm mashed potatoes that we waited for almost 2 hours..at least the shrimp scampi was tolerable. Hot water for tea to go came with gross stuff floating in it.. read more

We were traveling all day and stopped to stay overnight in a nearby motel. We looked online and found Mountain Jacks. Such luck!!!! We had a fabulous meal in a relaxing and pleasant environment. I had the Grilled Salmon with some wild rice pilaf and garlic mashed potatoes. It was delicious! My wife had the chicken with sun-dried tomatoes which was excellent as well. The place is not very kid friendly and the decor was a bit outdated which were the only reasons I didn't give this place 5 stars. Good service though and great food. I would definitely eat here again. read more

We were at Mountain Jacks for our anniversary. This was our first time dining here. It was quite noisy in the room were we in, but we got used to it. The food was delicious, but the service was extremely slow - we waited a long time between courses. Not all bad, but we thought the time in-between was a little too long. The waiter was super courteous. The prime rib and salmon were fantastic. We will definitely be back. read more

Mountain Jacks has been our destination of choice for fine dining since it opened its doors over 27 years ago. The food is always superb, from their exceptional prime rib, to their brie stuffed fillet, to the lobster (to die for). I could go on and on. I've never been disappointed with any entree I've tried. The signature mud pie is an awesome finish, but so is the Creme Brulee and carrot cake. The atmosphere is quiet and relaxing - a perfect setting for a romantic night out or any other special occasion. read more

Amazing food! Love the salad wheel. There are no French fries here! Fancy and cozy. Great for a romantic type date.

this place is the absolute slowest restaurant and most inattentive i have ever been to. we have waited 45 minuets to be seated to our table when we had reservations. and then we had to wait over an hour to receive our food. read more

My family has been enjoying this restaurant for many years and and have always been pleased with our selections . It is is a great place with excellent food and terrific service. The decor is a little dated but the atmosphere is warm and intimate. Unlike many of the chains you don't feel like cattle being herded and you don't feel like everyone within 30 feet can here your conversation. They are not a chain as one reviewer suggested. If you want to dress up and go somewhere special or if you more in the casual mode and just want a superb dining experience Mountain Jacks is an excellent choice. read more

Really good job! Great steaks, very good pork chops! Excellent service!

Probably not going back. As one person had said, it was dank, dark and dirty. I wasn't impressed with the dining section of the interior. It looked there was a kind of lounge that looked pretty fancy, but I did not like the dining experience. The food was over-seasoned, so I couldn't enjoy the actual food, just the salt and pepper. It was overpriced for the portions and taste. The service was top notch, but that is all I would give more stars. I was very disappointed. read more

We went on Monday night. We usually have outstanding service. It was a good 15 minutes before a server approached us at all. We had seen the hosts each walk by a few different times and another server was at other tables several times, with her looking at us each time. Our server finally came to the table and apologized, saying he had an emergency. His service after was great. My problem is that he apparently had no back up. Why didn't a host or the other server help him out? There must not be any teamwork. The food was delicious as always. The only problem was that the other employees ignored us while our server was dealing with something else. read more

Not someone who writes reviews, but felt the need to express how great the food, drink and service was on April 16, 2016. Special party of 12 and MJ's rocked the evening. Our waiter Tyler was as good as you can get coast to coast. The whole place could not have been more accommodating!! Thanks for a great evening. read more

read some reviews and thought we'd check it out. old school interior almost like a library. sinatra and other classics playing softly in the background. would be a nice place for a date nite. our waiter was Nate. Nate was def a pro, excellent server. knew the menu backwards and forwards and helpful (without being pushy) with recommendations. started with shrimp cocktail and thought it was a bargain to get 6 jumbo shrimp for only 8$. nate then brings over a salad tray with all the different ingredients you could ask for and prepares your salad right there in front of you to your liking. very cool. we both wound up getting house cut prime ribs, my friend was very happy with his dinner, cooked perfectly. my end cut wasnt perfect and when i mentioned my issue to nate, he offered to replace it immediately (now dont go trying this if you've eaten half LOL, id only had a bite or 2) which i graciously took him up on. he came back a few minutes later and we were good to go. my friend also expressed that he was happy with the mashed potato side but the onion rings were pencil thin and looked like they were for the soup. i thought potatoes au gratin were done quite nicely but the asparagus were a bit on the scrawny side. finished up & was pretty full so we passed on dessert but saw the dessert tray and the offerings were very tempting. overall a pretty good experience. not a 5 star place that you might find in NYC or vegas, but a very reasonably priced steakhouse in lafayette indiana worth recommending. read more

The food was exceptional. However, I and my friend happened to have a bad experience today at this place. I visited Mountain Jack's this evening with my friend without reservation. A couple in front of us was greeted and put their names on the waitlist. After that, there was no greeting for us, but just indifferent staring in my face until I said "for two" after a silent moment. Couldn't feel any kindness from the hosts. Later, when our turn was up, a lady came up to us and said "follow me". Just 2 words without even looking at us. When we turned around and faced her, she was already heading to our table. When we were still waiting, 5-6 groups were called and the hosts were kind and all. On the other hand, their attitude toward us was very unpleasant. I don't know if that was because we were 2 men walked into a fine dinning place, 2 asian men, or they went through a bad moment just before serving us, but that was one unpleasant experience at such a good dining place. Thankfully, our server Madison was super kind and all, so it was all okay afterwards. Would I revisit? not sure! read more

After a long day on the road, we decided to book a hotel in Lafayette at the Red Roof Inn and Mountain Jack's was right next door. Checked the reviews on google and on here, all of which were glowing. We pulled up a little past 9 (in our Penske moving truck with our car attached to the back) in their parking lot, which we didn't realize at first, checked in to our hotel and ran over to eat. We walked in just past 9:20 and asked to see if we could leave our vehicle(s) parked until the morning which the manager graciously allowed. Upon being seated we asked if we could possibly unload the rest of our bags into our room and freshen up really quick, knowing they closed at 10. They let us do so and even saved our same table for us. We were back by 9:35 and placed our drink/app orders which came very fast and were delicious, and the bread was great too. We had the crab cakes and French onion soup, which for two people with high expectations were better than expected. For dinner we split the New York strip (10oz) medium rare, which unlike some reviews I read was actually juicy and full of flavor, with broccoli, table side salad bar (awesome), a "loaded" baked potato, and the Au Gratin potatoes (didn't "wow" me but were a nice addition to the meal), and lastly carrot cake for dessert which we brought back to room as it was nearly 30 minutes past close. This place was exactly what we needed after 16 hours of driving, excellent service-- especially from our waitress Christine. Every employee greeted and served us with a smile and we never felt like a nuisance. Definitely would recommend this Midwestern gem! read more
