I needed some new shoes, and it just so happened to be at the same time as a Healthcare/Educator offer, and I just so happen to have one of those in the family. The sale went quickly, and the manager let us know how to participate in the promo and got it all set up. In and out quickly. This mountain high location seems to be their largest one around Birmingham. Aside from all kinds of clothes, they've also got the best variety of outdoor gear out of all their stores. Definitely not a bad spot to browse around...you'll probably find something here that you want to buy. Parking is terrible, but I won't hold that against them. The people are generally pretty friendly and knowlegable about the products they're selling. An important thing to note is that you can browse their website and see what's in stock and at which locations, so if you're looking for something specific you can check there first and see if it's in before you drive down. Lots of items on sale usually as the new stuff comes in and the seasons change, so shop carefully and you can get some really good deals. So nice people, good deals, good outdoor product selection and an excellent variety of jackets, shoes and whatever else you might need. Definitely worth a visit if you haven't been. read more

I ordered a pair of Kuhl pants. The package was lost by UPS. When the pants finally arrived they were way to small even though I ordered my regular size that I buy in most brands. So long story short, I called customer service, they refunded me because the package was under investigation & was lost. Now I have return the pants at my cost! This is bad customer service, they should provide a prepaid label to mail items back when a customer has had a bad experience. This place is a joke. Time after time I walk out disappointed because the staff literally has no knowledge of the gear they're selling. I'm an avid backpacker with thousands of miles hiked and a professional volcano/backpacking guide with extensive knowledge of gear and back country travel. A few weeks ago I went into MHO looking for a light weight wind proof jacket and a rain jacket for an upcoming trip. I asked a guy on the floor to show me where the Arc'teryx jackets were and he didn't know. I found them in a side room and asked him what the difference between two different models were. His response was "Honestly, I have no idea but I can pull up their website and google it for you." I ended up leaving. This morning I decided to go back looking for approach shoes for the same trip. Approach shoes are used for technical hikes that lead up to rock faces for alpine climbing. I walk in and am greeted by the shoe department manager as he put it. I started asking questions about the 2 styles of approach shoes they had and he didn't know anything. Namely he didn't know the difference between the two brands or the rubber soles that's used and said he can tell me what the aesthetic differences are - not much help. This is the "shoe department manager" and he can't tell me basic information about the shoes. If you need a piece of gear to walk around a shopping mall, go to Mountain High Outfitters and pick out some cute clothes. If you need gear that's going to be used in serious conditions in the back country, do your research online and avoid this place. read more

Mountain High is definitely one of my favorite stores--and I haven't found a good equivalent up north yet. This particular location is well-staffed with capable and friendly sales associates, and offers the heady array of outdoor gear that I love being surrounded by. My wife, brother and I were in looking at Vibram Five-Fingers and other shoes, and the young man helping us out stayed very attentive over the course of 30-45 minutes of trying on numerous styles and sizes, looking for what we wanted in the supply rooms, explaining the aspects of different brands and models, and suggesting other items we may like--it was an excellent example of friendly salesmanship. Prices can be a bit hard to swallow on some things, but if you purchase it once and experience the quality of, say, a pair of Chaco sandals or a Timbuk2 messenger bag, you'll definitely appreciate their gear. read more

On 04/21/2019 at around 2:30 pm I visited this store. The employees at the front of the store were very friendly. We browsed the store. Then we went to look at shoes and that was a mistake. I have never encountered someone more unpleasant or rude at a retail store than the man working in the shoe area. He completely ignored me and catered to another family looking at shoes. I had to go out of my way to ask him for sizes to try on. It took him about 10 minutes to bring back the shoes from the back to try on. He came back with shoes for another customer, and as he walked by (he didn't even stop to talk to me) he said that he didn't have the color of shoe I wanted in my size. Then he walked away. He didn't ask if I wanted another color or anything. I had to go ask him for a different color in my size. He gave them to me and didn't even ask how they fit. The whole time I was trying them on he was just standing a few feet away looking around and doing nothing. He was just very rude. I decided I liked the shoes but I'm going to buy them from a different retail store. He did not deserve the commission from my purchase due to his rudeness. read more

When I noticed my 4-month old Keens were coming apart, I called to make sure I could make an exchange without any hassle - especially since they keep a record of my purchases in their system. Nope. Instead, I was told "it'd be a lot easier" if I'd return them to Keen myself. Yeah, a lot easier for MHO but definitely not for me. After dealing with more service oriented businesses like REI, this struck me as a really dumb move. Even the person I spoke to at Keen thought it was ridiculous since they give their retailers a 1-year warranty on everything, so it wouldn't have been a loss. That kind of complacency is a real shame since there aren't many other options in the area. Still, I won't be back. read more

This is for all Mountain High stores....though not the Birmingham one specifically. I purchased online and went to the one in Nashville. I cannot express how friendly these people are. They definitely hire the nicest, most personable people. That being said, their business model is awful. First, I placed 2 orders. I never received a confirmation email that the order had been placed (seems pretty elementary in the world of online stores), so I actually went and double checked to make sure I had done it correctly. I didn't hear a thing from them for 3 or 4 days.....nothing about shipped, item in stock, order placed, nothing. Finally, I receive an email from a customer service representative telling me that one of the items was out of stock. I am shocked that I could even place an item in the cart that was out of stock...again seems so elementary for online stores. But fine,the item is out of stock, what can you do? Then, I emailed him to ask about the other order I had not heard a thing about. He simply said, "The order has been canceled because the item was out of stock." I had to email them to find out about the order--- they just would have canceled it and never said a thing to me. Unbelievable. Well I made another mistake and decided to try purchasing another jacket because the price was so good. It arrived at some point later (probably a week later). They did email me a tracking number, but the information on it was so vague that I had no idea what it was for at the time. I happened to know the store is based in Birmingham, so I made an assumption that it was for this jacket. Is it hard to have UPS write, "Your order from MHO has shipped!" instead of just a tracking number with no other information? The jacket turned out to be too big, so I brought it into the store. I received store credit because I bought the item on sale. It took them about 20 minutes to locate my order number. 20 minutes. I just don't understand. Like I said, I cannot say enough about the people they have working there. Nice, helpful, chatty. However, this company simply doesn't know how to run itself--- poor customer service and communication, not following what should be simple procedures in fulfilling orders, etc. I get the feeling it's sort of a mom and pop operation that's grown too large and they don't know how to handle the growth. If you're used to the efficiency, ease and professionalism of places like REI, keep going there. No sale price is worth the hassle at MHO in the event you need to do anything other than walk into a store and buy something. read more

I went into this location looking to get a new pair of hiking boots. I went on a Friday afternoon so I figured that it would be crowded and boy was it. My experience didn't start out great... I was greeted at the door where I asked about shoes. The young man showed me the way and then just left. I wasn't sure where to start seeing the the section was pact with families and other customers. An older man came up to me and asked if I needed assistance. I told him what I was looking for and he pointed me in the right direction. But then I was very disappointed because he just left after showing me to the hiking boots. He didn't even ask me what I was looking for specifically. I was ver upset by this and was about to turn around and leave. Then a very polite young man came over and asked what had brought me in today and if could answer any questions. So I thought I'll give this guy a chance to change the opinion I had formed. This second younger guy was fantastic!! I'd say his name but that might no be my place to post it on here. He was very knowledgable and easy to talk with. What makes this a more interesting experience for me, and the fact that I'm leaving this review is that not only was he taking time to make sure I was finding what I needed and answering my questions he was helping other customers at the same time. I was very Impressed with this young man and knowing that he works at Mountain High Outfitters, I will be back again, especially if I know he is working. read more

Went into this location this evening to purchase a pair of hunter boots. There were two younger shoe clerks, one African American male and another younger Caucasian male. I inquired about two different colored boots. The Caucasian male looked completely clueless! Both of them disappeared and when they finally returned 15 minutes later, they started chatting with another customer. I interrupted and asked about the boots. The African American male said that they were out of red. I had also asked about gray, and he was also clueless that I had even asked. He then suggested that he could ask another store. We waited AGAIN while the African American male went to the register. The Caucasian guy wondered around clueless again, never asking if he could get the gray pair for me. When the guy never returned, we went to the register and he was on the phone obviously working on something else. We left. I can't believe that people go into this store with the intention of buying high end merchandise only to be treated like you are beneath them. Horrible service! The service in this store is horrendous. Although I was greeted when I entered store and was initally helped to find a Liwe is Good Tee shirt, I was never asssited again. I had to ask to use the dressing room instead of someone coming over to me and starting me a dressing room with the 4 hangars of clothing I was holding. When I entered the dressing room, it was so full of other clothes that people tried on, there was no place to hang what I wanted to try. Second dressing room the same. The staff, all three of them, hung around the register the entire time, talking. No one checked on me in the dressing room or offered to bring me any other sizes. I tried on some shoes and selected a $110 pair of North Face walking shoes. The salesman placed them in the box and turned away from me. I assumed he was taking them to the register. When I went to the register a few minutes later to pay, the shoes were not there and the salesman was nowhere to be seen. After 5 minutes and asking what happened to my shoes, the sales person at the register went to find the shoe clerk. Shoe clerk could not remember where he set down my shoes. I finally left. I will not shop here again even though they have an outstanding selection of clothing lines. You can not charge these kind of prices and expect people to pay for ZERO service! Poor customer service! I purchased a pair of shoes about 3 weeks ago. Once I got them, I wore them around the house to get used to them, but quickly noticed that there was a small defect (tongue tearing away). I immediately called customer service and they said that I could return them, but they could not commit to a warranty replacement until they saw them. Ok, that makes sense. I did notice that they still had the same shoe in my size in stock and asked if they could make sure they hold one for a couple days for my replacement. They said they could not hold any, but said they had several in stock and there should be no problem. This was Monday afternoon. I immediately went to the post office and shipped them out 'priority' so they would get them soon (OR to AL took 3 days). I received a call from Mountain High this morning (Thursday) and the rep said the received the shoes and confirmed that it was clearly a warranty issue, but unfortunately they were now out of stock in that shoe and would have to send it back to the manufacturer for a replacement. This would take up to 5 weeks. This is ridiculous. She said the only other option would be for them to mail these shoes back to me so that I could send it directly to the manufacturer myself. Really! Although I wouldn't have been interested, she didn't even offer me another color of the same shoe that they did have in stock. read more
