I've now hiked Pine Grove Furnace twice -- once on a warm February Saturday morning just to get out…read moreand move, and once specifically to check out the Appalachian Trail Midway Point marker. Both visits delivered exactly what I was looking for: quiet, well-maintained woods and a chance to disappear for a bit. Parking was easy both times. I found spots right near the trailheads without circling or waiting, which immediately set the tone for a low-stress hike. Even better? Across both visits, I saw a grand total of three other people. Three. If you're looking for seclusion and space to think, this is a solid choice. The trails themselves are clearly cared for. They were well-maintained, free of trash and debris, and the recent tree work was evident in the best way -- cleaned up, safe, and thoughtfully handled. Blazes were easy to follow and intersections were clearly marked, so navigation on the ground wasn't an issue at all. One important heads-up: I had zero cell service with Verizon either time I was there. None. Plan ahead. Download your maps, save your trail info offline, and don't rely on pulling anything up once you're in the woods. It's peaceful... but it's disconnected. Beyond the trails themselves, there's a lot to appreciate in the area -- from Appalachian Trail landmarks like the Midway Point marker to the surrounding natural beauty that makes this part of Pennsylvania so special. It's one of those places that feels quietly significant without being overrun. If you're looking for a quiet hike, a reset, or just some time in well-kept woods without crowds, Pine Grove Furnace is an excellent option. Peaceful, scenic, and exactly what it should be.

It's perfect for families with kids and there are little playground areas to enjoy. The bathrooms were overrun and dirty so a head's up on that. The lakes and beach areas were cute and very kidsy for the little ones. I found the waters way too murky for my preference but if you love bullfrogs and lily pads in black water then this is the spot for you. I just can't do too much algae overload.

This campground has had new owners since October 2021. It is no longer Conewago Isle Campground…read more The new name is Campground Island. The owners were extremely friendly, nice, helpful, energetic, and excited to be traveling on their new adventure. They only started re-constructing this campground in November of 2021. They have a lot to do. Most of the sites are still grass. The owners plan on creating gravel pads for all sites. There's a fair amount of muddy areas due to new construction and drainage issues which I'm sure the owners will address. All the sites have a good amount of space between them. Our site was one of the most level sites I've ever parked on. It is a pull through buddy site. The owner said that he just dumped and spread the stone the morning we checked in. The softness of the stone showed it was very new. It could benefit from a nice heavy machine running over it a few times. The bathhouse/showers were really nice and clean. The rec hall was nice. Once again, these are works-in-progress and the rough edges showed a little bit. There is no store or office. Currently, the only way to book a night is online. This is a problem when there is no wi-fi and your phone service has only two bars and you have to go online to find the number. This campground has great potential! My wife and I will be going back. The problems I listed above are growing pains. They can't fix everything in one day and overnight. It will be fun watching this campground grow and mature.

We have two little kids and they loved the playground, outdoor ping pong table and outdoor movie night! They handed out free popcorn and even had a piñata the next day in celebration of cinco de mayo! The coffee and ice cream in the market were both delicious and the staff was very friendly. The rec room had great games and a craft center for the kids which was great since we did get a lot of rain on day 2. Overall a great experience and we will definitely be back- the website gives a great rundown on themed weekends. Almost forgot one of the most important parts- the bathrooms were so clean and accommodating! Little things that you may have forgotten were stocked for you in the ladies bathroom.

We're headed back home to NH today, and we are so sad to be leaving the Gettysburg KOA! This fourth…read moreof July week was probably the best camping experience we've ever had. Definitely our best KOA stay! Our family of four, plus our Boston Terrier, stayed in a two room camping cabin. It was great because my husband and I had our own room and space, and our boys (10 and almost 12) had their own too. It was SWELTERING hot this week, but thankfully our cabin had an AC in the back room and ceiling fans in both rooms, which kept us nice and cool. It also had a decent sized mini fridge, which allowed us to eat at the cabin a majority of meals and cut down on food cost. It's an absolutely beautiful location outside of downtown Gettysburg. Our cabin was secluded and situated at the end of a path, so even though we had neighbors, no one was walking by/through our site at all (which can be really frustrating when you're crammed like sardines at other campgrounds). At night we'd sit by our campfire and watch the fireflies. I've never seen so many in my life; The trees around our site looked like they were twinkling with lights every night. I brought our dog for a walk early one morning and even saw a deer in one of the empty camper sites. It couldn't have been more than 20 feet from me, eating from one of the bushes. Just an overall gorgeous and serene place. Our boys also had a fantastic time. There was so much for them to do! They did a magic workshop and saw a magic show, did movie and popcorn nights at the pavilion, listened to Civil War ghost stories, swam, played mini golf/shuffleboard, mined for gems, rode the funky bikes, jumped on the jump pad, played on the playground, played jumbo chess/jenga/connect 4, made some great friends, and the list goes on... Because it is a fairly small and quiet campground, we felt safe letting them walk to and from these activities. It allowed us to give them more independence and trust, which we all enjoyed. We've been at campgrounds where there were adults up partying, being loud/drunk, blasting music into the wee hours of morning. To our relief, this KOA had none of that! It was very family friendly. But above all else, the entire staff was so warm and welcoming from the moment we arrived. We were always greeted with a smile and friendliness. This is a perfect example of what a KOA should be!! Our family was very sad to be packing up and leaving today, but I have no doubt that we will be back in the near future. Thank you all for making our week in Gettysburg so wonderful! :)
