John and I took a weekend getaway for a leisurely weekend to Bridge Creek Inn. There we enjoyed the mountain views while exploring the wildlife, activities, and downtown shopping. Bridge Creek Inn is touted as Clayton's Living Room, a community gathering spot. You can catch a game or enjoy a cocktail from the Vandiver, their on-site upscale tavern. And being in the middle of downtown, it's THE place to stay and explore everything that downtown Clayton, GA has to offer. The moment you walk into the lobby "living room," the hotel greets you with natural wood beauty, soft wood furniture, darker wood ceiling, and plush and cozy seating areas that dot the lobby. It's calming from the second you enter. Gather by the fire, grab a quick coffee or snack at their cafe, and people watch from their cozy lounge area. It's the place to relax and unwind. Upstairs, our room was the spacious King Suite with 180 views of the mountains and downtown! Simple and clean, yet modern and new, it was a beautiful room. The bathroom was light and bright, large shower, and pristine vanity. Heading around the corner is a cozy seating area with leather chairs made for a fun reading nook. The bed area drew your eye with a dark blue accent wall, mountain decor, and a comfy, large, king bed. Plus, we could look at the Mountain View all day. As we mentioned, they have an upscale tavern restaurant on site, The Vandiver, a main street tavern. Only open for 5 days when we visited, the space has some serious casual steakhouse vibes. Think exposed wood beams and circular booths. We're impressed with the delectable shared plates, sensational dishes, and elevated cocktails! Like the Venison Wellington that's super tender and juicy deer, cooked perfectly without a hint of game. The meat is surrounded by a perfect pastry that's crunchy on the outside, yet flaky and gloating in a moat of rich and deep jus around it.

And it's hard to enter going in from the fast road. Continental breakfast is pretty limited, and their coffee is bad. The light switch for the bathroom is outside the bathroom so when you're done with the bathroom you have to reach for the light switch on the outside wall and the light coming out from the bathroom would disturb the person sleeping and that's bad design. The light switch should be inside the bathroom. I would not want to stay in a hotel with that design (unless I'm single). When we arrived on our first day of our visit the mini refrigerator had water on the bottom inside and it didn't seem to be cold enough so we had to report it to the front office and they came the next day to fix it. I expect everything to be working okay during our first day of stay. The maid service was okay. There was confusion one time, they took our used towels and didn't leave cleaned one and they didn't do any maid work on that day and we had to report it. The bathroom was small, reminds me of the small bathrooms in Japan. The room size was okay but there were not enough chairs (for married couple). The pricing for the room stay is reasonable. The reason we stayed in Clayton was to do whitewater rafting very close by.

From the grumpy female manager, frothing at the mouth at the front desk, to the musky smell in the jail cell sized rooms right to the left-over stale cereal spit out at you from the machine in the morning.. Rooms at this dingy place were mediocre, overpriced for the size (I could practically touch both walls with both hands), ill-equipped with broken down machinery and squeaky doors! Each room had a party with grills and BOOM BOXES out front, so you know you won't be staying alone, sound-wise.. To top it all off, there were rogue and rabid stray dogs (WOLVES?!?) biting people, cars and each other in the parking lot in the morning sun. There were tourists who literally got out of their cars to attempt to pet them, only to be returned by vicious bites, snarls and growls! What is this place? It seems to be a kind of South-of-the-Border Tijuana-like dive experience. Come to break your teeth on stale Kellogs and walk outside to be chomped in the leg by shaggy wolves who devour half of Georgia's hot and sizzling trash!! Review: never again

I would strongly recommend choosing another hotel for the health and safety of anyone considering a stay here. * Upon entering our room I could not tell if the beds were remade with new sheets after the last guests or if the same old sheets from someone else were left on them. If they were new, the person who made the bed didn't take pride in making the bed because there was nothing clean or crisp looking about it. It looked like someone had been laying on both beds and the pillowcases were all wrinkly. What was the worst was none of the pillows had protectors or another pillowcase underneath so you could see all the stains from previous use. You better hope that your pillow case didn't shift in the middle of the night and your face or mouth ended up on the actual pillow underneath. * It doesn't look like new towels were put in the bathroom. If they did, their presentation was poor as it looked like one of the towels were bunched up liked someone just stuffed it back up there without trying to make it look like it was not used. * The towels were rough and stained. I was super disgusted when I got out of the shower and went to grab a towel only to find some type of matter on both sides. * The decor on the wall is yellow. In other words, the whole picture matte around each of them have changed from either a white or ivory color to a yellow shade. The frames were all jacked up and sat sideways on the wall. Again, no pride in presentation. * The ceiling is lined with yellow around the perimeter of the room. * There was mucus on the wall in two areas above the toilet paper holder.

Our two queen bedroom had a mini fridge but no microwave. Phone didn't work. Direct TV worked ok but it's not a big screen. Shower is in a somewhat narrow bath with modest pressure but it works and it gets warm. Beds are comfortable enough and the room in general, which could use a face lift, works just fine. Our room at least wasn't all that spacious but deck out back with view is a nice feature. Allowing dogs is also a rare feature which we appreciated (relatively low charge of $25 total). The spa is fine but it's unfortunate that they don't have a hot tub at the pool. The pool doesn't get deeper than 4.5 feet but it's big enough to do laps if it's not crowded. They have small jacuzzi tubs in the single sex locker rooms and steam and sauna rooms. They offer massage and facials at the spa too. Prices looked pretty standard for these services. Restaurant on site was ok but not our favorite (see my Kingwood restaurant review). We actually like the continental breakfast well enough with the not-synthetically seeming normal hotel eggs and the Belgian waffles. I played 15 holes on the golf course and found it to be a pretty decent and interesting enough course at an affordable price. If golf isn't your think they have some on-sight hiking trails that are pretty scenic. The outdoor pool looks like it would be nice too in the summer. Very little at this resort will probably "wow" you but it's a decent value proposition. Mostly you come to Kingwood for the views and the beautiful mountain town. While it didn't bother my wife much, this resort will never get above four stars for me while constantly hearing the traffic on the road just below.

We loved the change in scenery going from flat land, to rolling hills, mountains and beautiful trees. It was very easy to find the location and that's saying a lot as I'm TERRIBLE with directions! Upon exiting your car, you instantly feel peace as you hear the waterfalls cascading down rocks and breathe in fresh air. The parking is right next to the cabins which are easily accessible. Our family stayed Sunday - Saturday and we had plenty to do and still missed out on seeing some attractions. We have a large family of 7 and were easily entertained. Some days were spent at the Inn relaxing, floating in the creek with inner tubes, sunbathing on the rocks, or just sitting by the water sharing fun family stories. Many evenings were spent outside grilling, playing cards and outdoor games like corn hole and Jenga. It is relaxing not being in a very touristy area. There are a lot of fun outdoor activities (white water rafting, hiking, camping, lakes, mountain view's) in the immediate area and a short drive to more popular locations like Helen or the Smokies. The housing was perfect, beds were comfortable, the shower water pressure was AMAZING, and rooms were very cool despite coming in the heat of summer. Most our time was spent outdoors enjoying the beauty of the property. At night, everything is lit up with ambient lighting, even the waterfalls! No mosquitos were to be found which was a pleasant surprise. All in all this is a MUST see if you are looking for a great place to stay that's peaceful, beautiful, close to town yet still in the hills. We can't wait to go back!
