My husband and I stopped in here for the first time on a Saturday (no appointment needed to look at frames) in December. We didn't know much about the place, expect for some reviews we had read online. He really wanted some new frames that 'didn't look like all the others.' Enter Discerning Eye. We arrived to a bustling shop and were greeted right away. This place is a feast for the eyes. So many beautiful frames to try on. Eclectic, funky, artsy, and unique describe what they have to offer. After a few minutes of browsing, Emily came over to assist us. She is awesome. She stayed with us during our entire visit. My husband tried on several different frames, asked lots of questions, and we were in and out in less than two hours. We never felt rushed while we were there, despite how busy they were. Frames are organized by designer. Bargain frames are in the basement. We intend to go back and check those out at some point. They had a trunk show going on the day we visited, so it was quite the overall experience. Snacks, CHAMPAGNE, and a prize basket (we received $30 off a pair of frames). While other doctors were making me wash my eye lids with baby shampoo, she was the the only one who correctly diagnosed me with Thygeson's SPK. The other doctors told me not to wear soft contacts, Dr. Fitzgerald told me soft contacts work as a band-aid and reduce inflammation. I've been seeing Dr. Fitzgerald for over 5 years now and my Thygeson's has diminished greatly, almost to the point where is has completely disappeared. I've recommended Dr. Fitzgerald to my friends and family and they've all had positive experiences. I cannot recommend her enough.

I visited Pearle Vision over the weekend for a very last-minute appointment I had booked after realizing I has used the last of my contact lenses. The front desk staff were very friendly and helpful. During the initial part of my eye exam, I was very impressed/intrigued with the advanced technology of this practice; some of the instruments I had never seen or used before, even at other premier optometry facilities. It was very high-tech and I felt that it helped speed the eye exam process along, which I was very happy with. For the remainder of my eye exam, I was looked after by Dr. Larry Ellingson. And let me just say--though I was already thoroughly impressed by my experience thus far at Pearle Vision, Dr. Ellingson is what really made it a 5-star experience. He was so friendly and personable, and I really enjoyed him as my optometrist. He clearly knows his stuff, and during my appointment I felt that he really went the extra mile to explain the results of my exam slowly, in great detail, and in a way that I could understand. I felt that he was personally invested in my eye health, rather than other eye doctors that I have seen (who only seem interested in popping in to share my results, then swiftly moving on to the next patient). I have been coming here for my lenses. Last couple of pair are anything but scratch resistant despite paying the premium. They (now Elevate Eyecare) personalize the issue at the store, pushed back on my as a customer, repeatedly tried to go back on the warrantee. I had to get VSP engaged to get them to deliver. I tried to reach out to regional manager Christy, however she never returned my email. I have escalated within Elevate Eyecare but expectations are set low. I would advise NOT supporting Elevate Eyecare at any Iowa City location.

I switched over the Iowa Eye Clinic because my last doctor had issues with getting me into the right prescription. My right eye was still pretty fuzzy and he said it wasn't going to be perfect anymore. I am only 28 so I find that difficult to believe... Needless to say after 20-25 minutes in the chair Dr. Gauger and Mike had me in a crystal clear prescription!! After I was done being seen, I went over to the optical lenses shop and picked out a cute pair of Fysh UK Urban Eyewear glasses. Traci was beyond helpful in assisting me in picking out the right lenses for the shape of my face in addition to the right color.
