They Came, They Snaked, They Conquered…read more THE PROBLEM: Sunday night. The disposal side of my kitchen sink quit on us. Full stoppage. Water just sitting there... dark gray, murky, and spiritually unwell. Then, as if to join the chaos, my dishwasher randomly turned on and sounded like it was trying to flush out its regrets. I went to Yelp and fired up one of those project requests. Out of all the companies that got pinged, only one called me directly that night: Devin, the owner of One Source Renovations. At 8PM. On a Sunday. Let that speak for itself. Immediate trust unlocked. We scheduled a 9PM service. At 8:30PM, I get a call from Jamison, the tech. Another emergency had come up for them. He asked if we could reschedule our call to 8AM the following day. I gladly accepted the change. Here's what set them apart: Both Devin and Jamison communicated professionally. Respectful. Clear. No ghosting. No "we'll get back to you." Just a real conversation and a new plan. THE SOLUTION: At exactly 8:00 AM, Jamison showed up. Not "between 8 and noon." Not "running late." Just... there. Like a legend. Jamison explained everything clearly, treated us and our home with total respect, and got to work. 1. Vacuumed the standing water out of the sink 2. Removed the disposal unit to access the drain 3. Snaked the pipe to clear the blockage 4. Reassembled and tested everything. Clean, quick, efficient. He was done in under an hour. And when I say he left the workspace cleaner than when he found it? I mean it. The man wiped surfaces like he was being judged on presentation. THE TEACHABLE MOMENT (AND SOME SCIENCE): Jamison shared some knowledge: "Eggshells were the culprit." I then learned that providing a large brunch for my family can be the gateway drug to pipe failure if mistakes are made. He explained that when you grind up eggshells, the calcium from them will form with the grease and soap residue to create the perfect storm inside your pipes. The crushed shells form a gritty paste. The grease binds everything together. And the soap just helps it slide into place and coat your pipes like jelly. Pipe jelly. That's what I made. And now I'll never un-know it. His advice? "Food doesn't belong in pipes. But if it happens, run ice cubes and Dawn dish soap through the disposal. It'll help break up the sludge and keep the impellers moving right." No judgment. No condescension. Just solid advice that actually made sense. THE BONUS ROUND: While wrapping up, we chatted about future plumbing work. I have a few projects I've been putting off. I didn't want to scope creep his day, but he asked about a slow-draining sink in the primary bathroom and said, "Mind if I just knock that out real quick?" Five minutes later: Problem solved. Something I'd been living with for weeks was handled like a light switch. No fuss. No invoice. Just excellent service. THE VERDICT: 1. Devin called immediately when no one else did. 2. Jamison showed up on time, worked fast, solved the issue, educated me without talking down to me, and even won over my dog. 3. New roof and a great roof over the 20 x 25 patio about three years ago. Mark Gilliday was our estimator and our project manager. On site most every day and the days he wasn't he called to let me know - plus I know enough about construction and code to be comfortable if he had to step away for a bit. When he initially bid he even put the CAD drawing out for us (ha even put in a shade line so we could see how it would fall). Made a GREAT suggestion on the roof line to add light and visibility. They were not the cheapest, but not high by much. Close enough to run with someone I felt comfortable with. This is the first time in my 30 years of owning several homes I've ever let anyone do improvements - because I know how to do them and too many contractors out there do not. or if they do they won't do whats right. We are now getting closer to closing in the patio area for a 4 seasons sunroom and i'm about to call.

This lack of clarity caused delays and unnecessary stress. In addition, the quality of the work did not meet expectations. Several areas were finished hastily, with visible flaws that required additional repairs. While most of the team was polite in person, the overall execution and attention to detail fell short. We had to go outside at 7pm at night and try to clean up the mess in the dark so our dogs could use the bathroom. *Due to the lack of communication of when people were leaving my husband's vehicle was stuck In the garage over night while my car was parked down the road because there was no place to park and was afraid of getting nails in my tires. *My son couldn't come home that night due to no where for him to park and he had to take off 3 hour that Monday due to him not being able to due his job because he works a call center job and couldn't hear with the hammering and dogs barking *No communication what so ever from the supervisor that was supposed to come out that day but didn't show up or call and until I called him to find out why he didn't show up was he had COVID. I had been around him so I should have been told. Not the mention he brought his dad and son out and none of them were wearing masks. *Found beer cans in the trailer that was used for the shingles, so drinking was being done on the job. *Wasn't even told when our appt was. We decided we needed to tackle the water issues in the basement of our century old home…read more(unfinished, dirt dug out basement), as we ultimately wanted to be able to use the space as a work shop, but it flooded nearly every time it rained! Had numerous companies come out ranging from small time handymen up to national chains, had a variety of plans proposed. Ground Up's plans were the most comprehensive and they actually solved the problems, instead of just putting band-aid on issue. It was a major undertaking: we opted to dig basement floor down deeper, replace all 12 support posts in basement, move sump pump, and install three different drainage systems (we live on springs), but in the end- our basement is FINALLY DRY! We have had several storms since the work, and we have held our breath waiting to ensure nothing seeps in, but it has not. Also, with the replacing the posts, they were able to upgrade materials & optimize placement to provide us with much more usable space. The Ground Up team was great from beginning to end, the initial project manager did a thorough inspection of property, gave us all options, and helped us decide which ones to prioritize, and which ones would could be DIY or just put on back burner. We appreciated the honesty and help. The team that did the work was fantastic, they worked through horrible rain and mud conditions. Things were cleaned up at the end of each day, and at the end of the project. Overall we are so pleased with the work and so glad we went with Ground Up - they are big enough of a company that they are capable of major residential foundation repairs, but still small enough to answer phone calls & emails and take time to explain things to you. We now have a dry space for a workshop- and also a solid foundation that will last another 100+ years.
