Nestled on the southern end of Vancouver Island, Victoria is the picturesque coastal capital city of British Columbia. It blends old-world charm with modern experiences in honour of the ruling queen of England in 1843.
Remaining faithful to its British roots, it's known for its vibrant arts scene, stunning gardens, historic architecture and an outdoor lifestyle that takes full advantage of its scenic backdrop, where some of us had an excursion on the last port of call.
Our bus tour began near Mile 0, the western terminus of the nearly 5,000-mile Trans-Canada Highway. We continued with stops past leafy Beacon Hill Park, residential homes, Old Town, where remnants of Fort Victoria overlooked the waterfront, and Chinatown. Not to be done, the Parliament Buildings and many of their domes, lit with thousands of lights, left an unforgettable image.
We were able to exit the bus at the summit of Mount Tolmie Park. Wisely recognized as "The Best Place to View the City", it provided an excellent panorama of Greater Victoria at dusk.
As a special treat to end the tour, we stopped at a nearby Tim Hortons, a Canadian coffee franchise, for either coffee, tea, or hot chocolate accompanied by mini bite-sized doughnuts, famously known as Timbits.
Don't let a short port time fool one, though. Victoria is absolutely worth the visit, especially for those who have never been to British Columbia. read more
