I'm not from Boston, but after golfing at Mount Hood, I can understand why the locals call it a "hidden jewel." Visiting from LA and being not familiar with the area, we took a chance and drove to the suburb of Melrose to golf here. Here's a rundown: Staff: I talked with the people in the pro shop, the lady running the snack bar, the cart girl, a groundskeeper, the rangers, and the starter. I mean it when I say that EVERY SINGLE ONE of those people were friendly, kind, helpful, and authentic in their conversations. Food: Smash burger and fries. Need I say more? Golf Course: Great condition, greens were well kept, fairways were good, and it was challenging. Enjoying the scenery was a good trade off for a bad shot. Some of those trees actually saved me from a worse shot. We only played the front 9, but I'm sure the back 9 was just as nice. Overall, go play this course. I apologize now to the locals who want or keep it a "hidden gem" but hopefully more outsiders like me will get to have the same experience as I did.

Played the front 9 Holes of Mount Hood and would come back again to explore the back 9 holes. It was twilight hours so only $35 and $6 for push cart rental. Mount Hood is well maintained with consistently smooth greens that provide nice roll. The course has a beautiful sunset view of Boston and has a little castle at hole 8 you can walk up to see the skyline. It's not overwhelming challenging but had narrow fairways and plenty of trees. My ball hit a tree and it bounced backwards but luckily still in bounds. It definitely provides a nice challenge to beginners. Deciding to walk this course made it more difficult because of the hills but very glad to have gotten 3 miles of steps in. It did feel like a nice hike in the woods so bring bug spray especially during twilight hours. Needless to say I will be renting a cart new time to play 18 holes.

Decent scenic course within a short drive from the city. One of the few 18 hole options that's a municipal course. We arrived early to have lunch on the clubhouse patio. The food was ok. Basic sandwiches and typical appetizers. Service could of been a bit better, our order was done but was missing a sandwich, then it took another 10 minutes. Panini's were cold in the middle. On to the course..It was confusing finding the way around to the start off. There was no starter waiting, so the ranger drove by and told us to hop in a cart and proceed to the first hole. The vibe was very relaxed. There was a backup from our tee time by 20 minutes so we waited a while to tee off, then waited at practically every hole and the same with the party behind us. It made for a slow game. The course was in good shape. I liked the layout. Some hills but long fairways and not too many sloped holes. A few ponds and a good mix of different pars, mostly 4's. The surroundings were peaceful. There were signs of the history of the course with old stone walls, even some random fireplaces on the edge of the woods. There is a large stone tower overlooking the course on the 8th hole. The clubhouse has a very rustic look to it with its stone facade and paned windows. Prices were reasonable. It was $28 (9 holes) each then $8 for a cart. I will be back for more play, hopefully without a long wait.

Mt Hood is a wonderful place for a wedding. Thank you, Laura!

If you have 7 hours of time to play 18. Great place. No ranger to regulate the pace of play. Constant 2-3 group waits on tee boxes.

Fun little course with some nice views of the city, but there are WAY too many leagues making it a challenge to get a tee time.

“The course is absolutely stunning with seriously breathtaking views of Boston, esp from the 12th tee (I think?) with the stone tower.”

King Rail Reserve Golf Course - I have to say it was in great shape for a public course!

King Rail Reserve Golf Course

This is probably the prettiest, and most evil public 9-hole course I've ever played on. But you…read morewon't get to play it. Allow me to digress! - I like trying out different 9 hole courses. I'm a terrible golfer, but that don't stop me from trying. I looked online for places and came across this one. It sounded interesting. - This golf course used to be a big old classic 18 hole course. This was some years ago. They made a deal to sell some of their land for fancy houses, as well as set aside some of the nearby wetlands as a reserve to the "King Rail" bird for which this place is named. This place is right off 95 - literally right off the exit is the opening for this place. As you drive down their entryway, you'll pass by a giant old abandoned building on your left, along with a giant abandonded parking lot. Where am I? But then you pull to the right and over there you'll see the old pro shop, as well as an open driving range. I got ready and checked in - $21 for 9 holes, walking. About average for this area. Still a lot, if you ask me! - Let's get to it. I had the worst round of my life here, but I can't hold it against this place. It's beautiful. Sure, at the first tee, I heard the construction of the machines at the opening of the place, along with the higway, but after the first hole, that noise fades. The course sits right along this protected marsh area for the King Rail bird I mentioned earlier. They are like mosquitos here! They buzz about - beautiful things! it makes for a really nice time outside - even if your game is terrible as mine. I said this place was evil: and that's because if you are even just a LITTLE off your game - forget it. Water. Brambles. Marsh. You're going to lose a ball or 2 or three playing here for sure. Challening and maddening at the same time. I lost a ball in these brambles - it was 6 feet in - and I could clearly see the ball - laughing at me - but I simply could not get to it. It was like it was in a mess of barbed wire! Ugh! - For the most part, the course was in excellent shape for a public 9 hole course. BUT - I did encounter one absolutely terrible green - and a few very wet marshy spots (nearly lost a ball in them). BUT - as far as 9 hole public course go, I really did like it. - Now, I mentioned that you won't get to play this place. That's because they're closing down in June of this year (2010) and will reopen in 2 years. Big plans to re-make this place. And, it needs it. The ancient clubhouse and parking lot I passed on the way in are a depressing eyesore. The proshop itself needs some TLC. They aren't too sure what's going on here - ie: they ordered a grill and were going to make a kitchen and sell food but it never got off the ground. - The course is beautiful and treacherous at the same time! I imagine in 2 years after the complete overhaul, this place will be glorious.

I spent three days here in June, and played the Senator and Legislator twice each and the Judge once. What a treat! The Senator is a links style layout that is very challenging. There are no trees, moderate elevation changes, lots of bumps, and plenty of sand bunkers. There are many blind shots where strategic placement of drives and layups are critical. The wind was blowing when we played, and I imagined it was close to playing an old course somewhere in Scotland. This Legislator is a beautiful course that is a traditional layout. The course meanders through woodlands and tree lined fairways. The back nine starts with a memorable ride past the clubhouse. The cart path winds down an elaborate wooden bridge. The back nine has some unique holes with a stretch that runs along a mountain ridge. #15 is a par four with a dramatic downhill tee shot to a wide fairway. I thought the Judge was hardest and most beautiful of the three courses. It runs along the Alabama River and water is in play on most of the holes. The view from #1 tee box is spectacular. It is extreme downhill drive to a narrow fairway. Two of the par threes are essentially shots to an island greens that require precise accuracy. This track measures about 5900 yards from the white tees, but it feels much bigger. The par fives are long and difficult(#7 measured 575 yard and #10 is 503).

Everything was true. There was not a single hole where I felt comfortable hitting the driver off the tee. It was 3 wood or my trusty hybrid pretty much all the way, except for the par 3s, naturally. A few tee boxes were beat up a little. The fairways and greens were all in good shape. But there was plenty of trouble lurking if you missed the fairway. The rough was high to near impossible to get out of, plus there were plenty of thick woods and high reeds to gobble up to your wayward shot. Even playing the white tees the course seemed longer than most public courses. Yes it is a challenging course forcing you to play positional golf for much of the round. But by no means was it unfair. $67 for 18 with cart on Sunday, which seemed a little steep. I understand Peabody residents get a discount as the course is owned by the town. My only real gripe was the snack bar just ran out of hotdogs when we made the turn after nine :( I played well, hitting the shorter woods, and was happy with my round. I would definitely play it again.

Asked another cart only to find they were lost too. Very frustrating. We play lots of golf but this course was a new low in layout and signage. PS. Get a cart. Two years later we went back. Very sad to see the state of the course. Every course on the north shore is lush from the rains but not the Meadow. Either the greenskeeper isn't s greenskeeper or the city is not giving them money to maintain the course. The fairways are patches of grass surrounded by thousands of divots. The place needs mowing by professionals. Scrapes and scalps everywhere. The rough is all clover and ridiculously high. We lost seven balls that were a couple of feet off the fairway. Not a fun place to play. At least the signage is better.
