Stop letting people smoke cigars on the porch. Went for dinner and the food and entertainment was good but the stench was overpowering.

King Rail Reserve Golf Course - I have to say it was in great shape for a public course!

King Rail Reserve Golf Course

This is probably the prettiest, and most evil public 9-hole course I've ever played on. But you…read morewon't get to play it. Allow me to digress! - I like trying out different 9 hole courses. I'm a terrible golfer, but that don't stop me from trying. I looked online for places and came across this one. It sounded interesting. - This golf course used to be a big old classic 18 hole course. This was some years ago. They made a deal to sell some of their land for fancy houses, as well as set aside some of the nearby wetlands as a reserve to the "King Rail" bird for which this place is named. This place is right off 95 - literally right off the exit is the opening for this place. As you drive down their entryway, you'll pass by a giant old abandoned building on your left, along with a giant abandonded parking lot. Where am I? But then you pull to the right and over there you'll see the old pro shop, as well as an open driving range. I got ready and checked in - $21 for 9 holes, walking. About average for this area. Still a lot, if you ask me! - Let's get to it. I had the worst round of my life here, but I can't hold it against this place. It's beautiful. Sure, at the first tee, I heard the construction of the machines at the opening of the place, along with the higway, but after the first hole, that noise fades. The course sits right along this protected marsh area for the King Rail bird I mentioned earlier. They are like mosquitos here! They buzz about - beautiful things! it makes for a really nice time outside - even if your game is terrible as mine. I said this place was evil: and that's because if you are even just a LITTLE off your game - forget it. Water. Brambles. Marsh. You're going to lose a ball or 2 or three playing here for sure. Challening and maddening at the same time. I lost a ball in these brambles - it was 6 feet in - and I could clearly see the ball - laughing at me - but I simply could not get to it. It was like it was in a mess of barbed wire! Ugh! - For the most part, the course was in excellent shape for a public 9 hole course. BUT - I did encounter one absolutely terrible green - and a few very wet marshy spots (nearly lost a ball in them). BUT - as far as 9 hole public course go, I really did like it. - Now, I mentioned that you won't get to play this place. That's because they're closing down in June of this year (2010) and will reopen in 2 years. Big plans to re-make this place. And, it needs it. The ancient clubhouse and parking lot I passed on the way in are a depressing eyesore. The proshop itself needs some TLC. They aren't too sure what's going on here - ie: they ordered a grill and were going to make a kitchen and sell food but it never got off the ground. - The course is beautiful and treacherous at the same time! I imagine in 2 years after the complete overhaul, this place will be glorious.

He also kept following us and smoked a cigar in front of us. I said you ruined our game and please leave us alone . Just rushed and rude employees ever since they did upgrades. Happened two times . If you golf in Lyn field I would golf in reedy golf course they are very a very nice staff. I complained to them and there staff said they have heard that kingrail is not a nice place to golf. I will golf at reedy for a nice experience

Nice long, hilly, challenging, well maintained, public golf course. Played a round there recently…read moreand was forewarned that the fairways were pretty tight and there were many blind shots. Everything was true. There was not a single hole where I felt comfortable hitting the driver off the tee. It was 3 wood or my trusty hybrid pretty much all the way, except for the par 3s, naturally. A few tee boxes were beat up a little. The fairways and greens were all in good shape. But there was plenty of trouble lurking if you missed the fairway. The rough was high to near impossible to get out of, plus there were plenty of thick woods and high reeds to gobble up to your wayward shot. Even playing the white tees the course seemed longer than most public courses. Yes it is a challenging course forcing you to play positional golf for much of the round. But by no means was it unfair. $67 for 18 with cart on Sunday, which seemed a little steep. I understand Peabody residents get a discount as the course is owned by the town. My only real gripe was the snack bar just ran out of hotdogs when we made the turn after nine :( I played well, hitting the shorter woods, and was happy with my round. I would definitely play it again.

A nicely kept, fairly difficult course. The greens are in good shape…read more However, the signage on the course is virtually nonexistent. We got lost three times looking for the next tee. Asked another cart only to find they were lost too. Very frustrating. We play lots of golf but this course was a new low in layout and signage. PS. Get a cart. Two years later we went back. Very sad to see the state of the course. Every course on the north shore is lush from the rains but not the Meadow. Either the greenskeeper isn't s greenskeeper or the city is not giving them money to maintain the course. The fairways are patches of grass surrounded by thousands of divots. The place needs mowing by professionals. Scrapes and scalps everywhere. The rough is all clover and ridiculously high. We lost seven balls that were a couple of feet off the fairway. Not a fun place to play. At least the signage is better.

Nothing special about this place. I tried going once before, but drove out there just to find out…read morethey had decided to close early for no apparent reason. I just read another review that said they have grass tees. If that's so, they make no effort to advertise that fact. I didn't see any signs indicating there were grass tees anywhere. They must be located at the far end of the range. You'd think the gentleman at the counter would mention that I had the choice to hit off grass or mats. I found the prices to be a bit inflated at $8 for a small bucket (about 25-30 balls) and $11 for a "large" that seems to only hold 10-15 more balls. The range itself is okay. The yardage markers seem pretty accurate. There are no hoops or fun targets to aim at. The ground is pretty uneven, which makes it hard to judge the total distance of a drive since your ball could get no roll whatsoever depending on what part of the fairway it lands on. All in all, this place is ok if you just need to hit a few balls and work on your swing. If you want a little more visual stimulation, as well as more bang for your buck, you're better off driving up 114 to Paradise Golf or Golf Country in Middleton.

Said to the attendant "Wow, $14 for a small bucket". The response was "Your paying for the location being Swampscott/Salem, feel free to take the ride to the other two in Middleton". I will say the landscape is nice which tells why they rob you for a bucket. Do better Dilisio Brothers you own half the town and much more.
