Dr. Greg Kaiman - this review is for Dr. Kaiman, who performed the spinal surgery on our dog. When…read moreour dog suddenly lost use of his back legs, we were devastated and had a very short period of time (48 hours) to decide what to do, pick a surgeon, etc. I remember consulting Yelp, and I wish a review like this had been available at the time, so I am writing this in the hope it helps someone facing the same decision in the future. Dr. Kaiman was truly wonderful. You can tell he genuinely enjoys his job, and he's great at it. He was very engaged and knowledgeable, and he patiently answered all of our questions. He is clearly highly intelligent, but he is also very personable and could explain things in a relaxed way that we actually understood. He returned some of our follow up calls himself, when he very easily could have had a vet assistant call us back. The surgery turned out excellent. Our dog has now fully recovered. Of course, that isn't always guaranteed, but I would trust Dr. Kaiman with my dog without question.

I have had positive experiences with Veterinary Referral Associates in the past, which makes…read morewriting this review especially disappointing. Unfortunately, our experience there when we said goodbye to our 13-year-old cat, Sparky, was very different. Sparky had been seriously ill and under the care of our regular veterinarian for months. We knew his diagnosis, had tried treatment, and watched his condition continue to worsen. Despite Cerenia, he was still having severe vomiting, and his chemotherapy medication had become extremely stressful for him. On a Sunday morning, we made the heartbreaking decision that it was time to let him go rather than make him suffer until our regular vet reopened. The receptionist was kind and compassionate. Unfortunately, what followed made an already devastating morning much harder. The veterinary technician came in twice to question us about Sparky's history, his treatment, whether we had considered hospitalization, and why we had decided on euthanasia. We explained that he had been under ongoing veterinary care for months and that this was not a sudden or casual decision. At one point we were told, "You can't change your mind. This is permanent." We knew that. We had loved Sparky for 13 years, and we were already heartbroken. The veterinarian then came in and also initially seemed judgmental about our decision. Once we were able to fully explain Sparky's history, how long we had been treating him, how poorly he was doing, and why we felt continued treatment was no longer in his best interest, the veterinarian became much more compassionate and understanding. I appreciated that shift, but by that point I already felt as though we had been repeatedly asked to defend one of the hardest decisions we had ever made. I completely understand that a hospital has a responsibility to ask appropriate questions and confirm informed consent. What I did not expect was to feel as though we had to prove we had done enough for him. I cried through most of the visit, and instead of feeling supported, I left questioning whether we had done the right thing. We waited roughly an hour and a half before the euthanasia process began, and Sparky was taken away from us for most of that time. Knowing that so much of the limited time we had left with him was spent separated from him is especially painful. Once the euthanasia process began, it was handled gently and respectfully. What stayed with me afterward was the guilt. I barely slept that night. The next day I called our regular veterinarian, who had been treating Sparky and knew his history. She reassured me that we had made the appropriate decision and explained that his continued severe vomiting despite medication was a sign that his disease was progressing and that there was very little more that could reasonably have been done. I hope VRA reviews how end-of-life cases are handled. Ask the necessary questions, but also recognize when grieving owners have already spent months trying to help the animal they love and are now making an extraordinarily painful decision. We needed compassion while saying goodbye to Sparky. For much of the visit, we felt judged instead.

I will absolutely blast them for being dirt bags for pushing cremation special services on me and a hard sell as I was comforting my animal in his dying moments. I paid in full after entering and knew and authorizedthat it was appropriate to let my dog go. The sniveling little lackey had the nerve to come into the darkened room and say "I'll just leave the brochure here with your invoice " after I told him to leave me be with my beloved pet. Do I suspect they just scoop up a pile of ashes from the communal cremation? -yes: And charge you $300 for them. Maybe, maybe not. It's a window into the vile, shitty world of private equity and exploitation of the most sacred emotion. Easing a soul from pain to peace.

We brought our beloved 17-year-old cat, Freddy, to VEG after he began experiencing seizures. Freddy had been bravely fighting advanced kidney disease, and we knew in our hearts it was time to help him cross the rainbow bridge. We were completely devastated and hysterically crying as we rushed him there. We called from the car to let them know we were on our way, and from the moment we walked through the doors, it was all hands on deck. The team's immediate response was incredible. They met us with urgency, kindness, and compassion at a time when we could barely think straight. I can't speak to the medical treatment VEG provides beyond this experience, but I can wholeheartedly speak to the compassion and professionalism they showed us. Every member of the staff treated Freddy with dignity and treated us with so much empathy during one of the hardest moments of our lives. A week later, we received a handwritten sympathy card signed by the staff. It brought me to tears. That small gesture meant more than I can put into words. After a less-than-stellar experience at another emergency veterinary hospital (Friendship), we were especially grateful for the care and compassion we received at VEG. Nothing can bring Freddy back, but the kindness shown to us that day has brought light to some very dark memories. For that, we will always be thankful.

In the…read moremoment I caught absolutely no one's name (sorry!) but we interacted with at least 5 people and all were so kind. From being in the parking lot to open the door and help us get her inside to taking care of the paperwork before the euthanasia so you can just leave on your own terms, the system they have is great for an awful day. The pushbutton to let them know you are ready so they don't have to check (and you don't have to ask) should be the standard everywhere. Chocolates for the dog (because at this point everyone gets chocolate!) but also for the people. Should be a different review but we have used them for other emergency care for all of our three now two dogs, and each time was great. I love that you are always with your pup, rather than having them taken to a back room for tests, especially for the fearful pups who can't stand to be separated from their humans. I understand some of the negative reviews about pricing but veterinary care is expensive these days and emergency care even more so. I've found VEG to be lower than the surrounding competitors I won't name here but you can figure out from the geography. Kindness abounds at this place when you and your furry friend are having a terrible day.

I especially appreciated being able to call back with a follow-up concern after we got home and having the veterinarian talk it through with me. When your dog is family, it matters to feel like the people caring for him understand how seriously you take his health. I watch my animals very closely -- I even have a camera pointed at their litter box -- and the first thing I told the vet, Dr. Castano, was that I suspected a UTI. He was hardly using the litter box, and he'd also urinated a large amount on a blanket, which is very unusual for him. Dr. Castano hardly documented any of what I told her, despite the fact that I explained I monitor my animals closely and know his patterns. She came out and told us the urinalysis was done and it was "fine," and that his abdomen was "fine" on palpation. We later learned neither was true -- her own notes said she couldn't get a urine sample and that his abdomen was tight, the opposite of what she told us in person. Instead of the UTI test I'd specifically requested, she pivoted to concern about a possible obstruction and recommended further testing and an overnight stay. We declined the overnight stay because of cost and because Zorro is a very anxious cat who does worse away from home and his mom. We dropped him off again at 9 AM the next morning for a scheduled sonogram. The sonographer, a traveling contractor, was on vacation and never showed. There were two failed attempts to find a replacement, with the cost rising roughly $300 with each call. By early afternoon, the front desk said they were trying to get him to eat, which meant the sonogram couldn't happen anyway, so we went to retrieve him. We then waited two hours in the waiting room before finally speaking with the practice owner, Dr. Walcoff. That's when I learned the urinalysis from the night before had never actually been performed. When I explained that the entire reason for the visit was a suspected UTI, Dr. Walcoff was able to obtain a small urine sample himself via ultrasound-guided cystocentesis -- the exact thing that could have been attempted, or at least honestly disclosed as not done, the night before. After waiting almost 3 hours since our arrival the result confirmed blood in his urine, consistent with a UTI. Zorro has been on antibiotics and doing fine since. When I raised this with the practice, I was met with defensiveness -- told it was a "miscommunication," that I must have misheard, or that Dr. Castano was simply more focused on the obstruction concern. I'm an elementary school teacher and my boyfriend is a police officer; we don't fabricate details like camera footage, water intake, or litter box habits. When an owner specifically asks for a test, and is told it was done and normal when it wasn't, that's not a miscommunication -- it's inaccurate documentation and false reassurance, and it delayed treatment for a real infection. I won't be returning, and I'd urge anyone considering this practice to ask to see actual results in writing before accepting a verbal summary.
