    Mother's to Go Box!
    Lance L.

I don't know about you.... But I am a SUCKER for a Good Story... And Mother's story, Got Me! First and Foremost, I want to dedicate this review to my own Mother, Ma as I call her, whom I look up to, who I cherish and who I can ALWAYS count on even as a 42 year old grown man. Thank you Ma for your all you do for me and my own familia. You are a great Mother and an even better Grandma to my 3 beautiful girls.... "Your Hitas" And to All Moms reading this.... Know that you are Incredible and you should be so proud of the difference you make in your children's lives Every. Single. Day. ------------ok let's do this--------------- So here's how it went down at Mother's Ventura... After doing our Christmas family photo shoot in neighboring Oxnard this past November, we continued on to Ventura after my wife said, "Hey, Lets go grab lunch in Ventura, I found a new spot I wanna try out" Hey, the girl has never steered me around before so I'm following her lead. And when I found out it was Mexican food.... Let's just say the gas pedal went a little bit closer to the floorboard. As we pulled into the shared parking lot, I could already tell by the amount of the cars in the lot that the place was going to be hoppin. As we made our way to the front door, there was a small line to get checked in, which is always a good sign. And within a few minutes we were at our table ready to get our grub on. Of course, NO MATTER what Mexican Restaurant I go to.... Chips & Salsa is my First Name and Tacos is my Surname. My middle name you ask?? Mexican Coke in a BOTTLE if they have it.... And Mother's HAD it! First things First... The chips were homemade & cut big (perfect for getting a big dip of salsa). The salsa was red, fire roasted and made my stomach do the happy dance. They are not complimentary, but worth the $7 bucks. Next up... A Margarita for my wife which was presented with a colorful salted rim, a dried orange and a flower... It was almost too pretty to drink...ALMOST. I, of course got my Mexican Coke in a bottle and it was Qué Rico! From there, we got right to business! As we were there on a Sunday, we ordered from the Brunch Menus and Brunch we did... Ventura Style! Between my wife & I... We went with 3 sliced Ribeye Tacos and they were.. EXCELLENT! A homemade tortilla... With a huge, thin sliced piece of Ribeye with a dollop of green salsa. Simple, Unique and Delish! For kicks and giggles, I also ordered a salt-grilled shrimp taco... My only edit that I would had made had I known... I wasn't a fan of the salsa that was on the shrimp taco, but that's just me. Next time, I'll opt for it to come dry and add salsa from my chips & salsa or made sub for the green salsa. As for my 3 kids, they shared their Mexican Hot Chocolate Pancakes with brûléed bananas, with a side of Mexican chocolate sauce & vanilla ice cream.... Ice Cream? For Breakfast?? Yes Please!!!! I believe we ordered a side of rice which never came out, but by the time we ate everything else, we were stuffed and just told them to just take it off our bill. Not that it was a big deal, but our server felt bad and wanted to make it right. So they gave us some complimentary Churros to-go and they were EPIC! Definitely order a side of these for your table! All in All, Mother's in Ventura fits the mold of the city and compliments the town perfectly. The menu is simple, Different (in a good way) and offers some fun Mexican Regional Specialties... Next time, I'm going for their Bowl of Chicharron and their homemade Mexican Shakshuka!! Mother's Ventura, To your Chefs and your Staff... Well Done! Provecho to All!

It was fun on a rainy day. Came and did our own taco flight. Tried the Baja Fish Taco, Grilled Steak con Papas Taco, Papas Taco, Pico Rico Taco, & El Piri Piri Taco. Next time I would like to try the fresh churro & dipping sauce. Cement floors & cement table tops mixed with a rainy day made it quite cold so dress warmly.

Got this place recommended by a friend and finally decided to check it out for lunch--glad I did. We went all in on tacos, and every single one delivered. I tried the Baja fish, Al Pastor, and the steak con papas. The flavors on each taco were perfectly balanced, but the standout for me was definitely the steak con papas--so good. The chef rotates the menu from time to time, which I actually love because it keeps things fresh, but if this is the baseline, you really can't go wrong with anything. Service was quick, and the vibe felt like sitting down for a family dinner--super welcoming and comfortable. Definitely a spot I'll be coming back to.

The aesthetic: 10/10 The food: 5/10 I really wanted to like this place because the aesthetic is so fun. But unfortunately the food didn't match. I ordered the Modelo Negra fish tacos which I will say are a hardy portion and my fish was decently sized and cooked perfectly. But the ratio of fish to cabbage was definitely off. (70% cabbage/tortilla : 30% fish) The tortillas were definitely handmade and delicious. My friend ordered the CDMX taco plate with asada and it came out SUPER burnt. It may have well have jerky, it was for sure a jaw workout. Again, the portion is good for what you pay for but the quality definitely isnt. For a drink I had tried their horchata auga fresca which had a distinct flavor of coconut. It definitely didn't taste like it came scooped from a ladel, more like coconut milk with spices. Super disappointed. This place gives me "gentrified mexican food" vibes but on a high quality level. I didn't get a chance to try any cocktails or churros this time but will come back to try next time.

What a great night out! Mothers is a really cool (sorry, Boomer-speak) place to enjoy good friends, good drinks, and good food. Lots of windows and polished concrete floors really set the mood. You order using a table QR code. We enjoyed Mothers Margaritas, chips and salsa, and housemade guacamole while waiting for our meal. Our meal included Carne Asada tacos, Negra Modelo Fish Tacos, along with Red Rice and Pinto Beans. We would have loved to try a Bowl of Chicharřon, but clearly we had our table filled with plenty of wonderful food. The serving crew were very nice and helpful in navigating the menu. This is a great addition to the Ventura dining scene and we are anxious to return.

Outside seating. You order with their QR code.

We stopped by here for a delicious dinner and Mothers did not disappoint! We arrived around 5:30 on a Thursday. There was plenary of seating. The menu has such creative dinner choices! Everyone in our group was happy!

Chef Danny and Chef Felipe were both so friendly and proud of the food they serve. I really enjoyed the duck carnitas tostada as well as the papas bowl, they were both delicious. Very clean and welcome atmosphere as well.

Thank you MOTHERS for making amazing food! I need to give a special THANKS to Davina, you went above and beyond today with your EXCELLENT customer service. You're a great asset to the business! See you sooner than later.

I was so excited to try this Mothers and sadly it didn't hit the spot. This place was all looks and no substance. The chicken skins were heavily seasoned with chili powder but had not salt. Had 2 pieces and I was done. The tacos were expensive and bland. Nothing was properly salted and the salsas were disappointing. The service was friendly but rushed. Drinks were good.

    So good.

Hey this place is great. Nice outside seating. Great tacos chips and guacamole. Everybody there was happy. I had the Baja fish tacos and they were as good as anything I've ever had and the homemade tortillas are delicious as well as the salsa.

    Patrick N.

The Esquite was exquisite! Very tasty, good combination of sauce, corn, and cheese with great texture. The tacos, not so much. I ordered the Sliced Ribeye, Duck Carnitas, and Salted-Grilled Shrimp. I think I did enjoy the Ribeye but at some point, my mouth was burning so much from the intense spice that I couldn't really enjoy my other tacos. I haven't had this serious of a burn in a very long time. I would say the Duck Carnitas came out lukewarm even though I waited a good 20 minutes for it. The Shrimp taco had two layers of tortilla but even then it got really liquidy that you probably have to eat that first. I was originally thinking about coming back for the octopus when I first saw the menu but I don't know anymore.

Came here with friends as it's a new place and wanted to give it a try! I think it's okay. I would need to give it another try to judge. It was really loud inside and small space so it's hard to talk! I tried few things, the corn appetizer and dirty fries were my favorite! You order at the cashier or app and they bring you the food.

Trying dinner the menu is totally different from lunch. The dinner is very elevated. So many good choices. I had the pawns over a mystique wood. Very flavorful and meaty. They were hug. The Rockefeller oysters was very delicious. the chorizo was a good mix. It went so fast lol. The ribeye steak was very juicy. so much flavor coming off that Mesquite wood adding that homemade house salsa was a nice taste. also shared it with a margarita ETA the rocks. Hit the spot. my best dinner in a long time. The staff was very friendly. Came around to talk about food. That was awesome

    Ask the Community - Mothers

What time does the brunch menu end and regular lunch menu start on Sunday?

Our brunch menu (a combination of our new lunch menu and some brunch items) runs from 10a-3p on Friday-Sunday. We transition to our dinner menu at 3p.

    Do you sell gift cards?

    Yes! Digital or physical!

I just looked at the menu, and I didn't see any vegetarian options at all. Could someone help me understand if there are vegetarian dishes here? Looks good, but dang, aside from appetizers and desserts, I didn't see anything vegetarian. Thanks!

On the taco side, we have delicious mushroom and potato tacos that are vegetarian. Our Calabacitas (grilled squash dish) is a vegetarian option on the entree side.

We started heading toward the patio and he then yelled at us that we had to stay inside while they cleaned up. As we stood there trying to enjoy the shooters we just purchased, he kept chirping about why we shouldn't have walked in the bar. No matter which Topa you walk into, you see familiar faces. There is a real sense of family there, and I would hate to lose that. The Thompson location specifically feels like home. When I lost someone very near and dear to me, Topa became a place where I could breathe again. On the worst days, walking through those doors made things feel just a little lighter. Sometimes it felt like I was holding my breath all day until I got there. There is a steady comfort in that space. Mama mia, that kind of place is rare. I have definitely "invested" ;) my fair share into the pool table and the pinball machine. Trivia nights with the awesome host, the food pop ups, Nicks Smash Burgers and Ramos Tacos are the best. Being introduced to new bands and almost always leaving a live show with a vinyl or CD by the end of their set. It truly is a community. Supporting local artists and seeing the same people show up for each other over and over again is part of what makes it special. And the beer is unreal. I was never much of a beer person, but a few years ago they pulled me in with Moo Bae then the Althlone Ranger, and then the 4 and 20. My current favorite is The Tux. Every time I go in, that is what I get. I loved when they had more dark beers too. Topa Topa opened the door for me into the craft beer world without ever feeling intimidating. Once you find a place where you feel appreciated and respected, where you feel known, you do not want to lose that. A huge part of that for me is seeing my regular beer tenders, Mike, Lea, Marie, and Zion. They are part of what makes walking through those doors feel like coming home. The Thompson location is that kind of place. Really messed up what you did. EDIT- This is nothing against the newer employees of Topa, but has everything to do with corporate. What were you thinking getting rid of 15% of your staff? The people that have helped build the foundation of your brand. The people that build the individual personalities of each taproom. The people that we have gotten to know and they've gotten to know us. Like I said before Topa is a family. I get that the craft beer scene is getting smaller but getting rid of family is so dumb. Your regulars have developed a relationship with these people. It's so disheartening to go now. When we go we aren't greeted by these friendly faces that know us. You'd think you'd focus more on your regulars you know the people that actually spend money here rather than the "next generation". Like I said, this has nothing to do with the new workers. They're nice. But the people we've developed relationships could NEVER be replaced. The lovers of topa topa do not like this. And I've already seen on Reddit people are saying they aren't going back.

I wouldn't call myself a big beer fan, but Topa Topa is one of those places that always pulls me…read morein. I usually order a flight so I can try a few different things, especially their special release beers. Two favorites I've loved during special releases are the Ojai Pixie Citrus IPA and Harvest Swoon Sangria-Style Sour. Both are super flavorful without being overwhelming. Their hard seltzers are also a great option when I'm in the mood for something lighter. The Ojai location has a relaxed, welcoming vibe and shares the space with Little Sama, which makes it an easy place to hang out. They also host community events like trivia nights on Tuesdays, which adds to the fun. A great spot whether you're really into craft beer or just enjoy a casual drink in a laid-back Ojai setting.
