    Mozzarella pizza
    Petey P.

I've become more amid a plain cheese pizza guy, and the Mozzarella pizza is incredible here. My favourite slice of all time is Joe's in NYC and this is the closest I've found in Halifax. There's also one with honey that's really good.

My new favorite pizza place! Amazing pizzas (and salads), great service, fun atmosphere, and even great beer! This place really is a fun dining experience. It is not the cheapest pizza place in town, but you get what you pay for. Great for a family night out, or a fun date for two. There is even a beautiful beer made by Garrison, exclusively for Mother's (aptly named Mother's Brew)! Although there are other good pizza places in town, Mother's is just a cut above. The pizza bar has officially been raised Halifax!

I would highly recommend going with a friend to split large. Me (24 year old grad student) and my brick layer friend left satisfied in fullness. Food itself was excellent, very full flavor. Crazy cool design inside. Service was ok, not very personable. Mouth feel was alright.

With my significant other working up in the Hydrostones now, our tour of the restaurants there has continued with gusto. After ticking off Halifax pizza legend Salvatore's off our (ok, my) list, we hit up the city's latest fancy pants pizza joint, Mother's. We came in on a nice Saturday afternoon right after they opened, and it wasn't long before half the 40-odd seats spread out between tables, a bar and the communal table were occupied. We were seated quickly and a bottle of water was left at the table, although the waitress was back frequently to top us up. It's a nice space, feeling very open with the black and white wall tiles and with what looks like re-purposed wood tables. A sizable shelf behind the counter displays their liquid wares and drinking vessels while random nick nacks keep things light hearted; a good-sized garden gnome on some turf owns the middle of the communal table while a little triceratops was in the jarred plant at our table. We went with their "garlies' - garlic fingers - for a starter. I didn't know this was a nickname for garlic fingers, and I would love to see them called "g-fingers" on a menu somewhere. For mains, their pizzas are available in 9" and 16" sizes. I went with a 9" Agricola, while my girlfriend went for the white pizza. After a short while enjoying my Propeller Pilsner and the Hydrostones scenery, we soon had our "garlies" in hand. It looks like a mozza-only garlic finger, with some chopped basil on top, which added a fresh zing to them. These are the thin and crispy sort of garlic fingers, and although I prefer the slightly doughier kind, these are good in their own right. Lots of stretchy cheese and a mild garlic flavour in the background make them a winner. The marinara on the side for dipping was no donair sauce, but its hint of tomato-y acidity and herbiness are a good counter balance for the richness of the garlic fingers. And one of the bonuses of eating with a long time partner: a free pass to double dip. With our app of dough and cheese under our belts (literally), we were ready for our mains....of dough and cheese. My Agricola, topped with Peasant's Pantry summer sausage, red onion, arugula, sunflower seed pesto and mozza, had a deep, well-rounded flavour. The mild sausage added rich, meaty flavour without overwhelming the other toppings. The pesto gave a unique flavour to the pizza that was fresh and light; a nice change from the typical tomato-based sauce. The crust was thin and crisp, with a enjoyable bready flavour. The white pizza came with chorizo, walnuts, mozza, gouda, and finished with a pile of loose arugula and a drizzle of a balsamic reduction on top. I'm not sure if it was because of some of the big flavours of the other toppings, but I was a bit disappointed to not really register the chorizo on my taste buds. I did enjoy the balsamic reduction which was milder than I typically find them to be. The walnuts added a nice crunch, and the arugula it well known peppery pop. Mother's is a great addition to the Hydrostones and Halifax's pizza scene, bringing well executed pies to the circular food loving masses.

    Mushroom, Sausage, and White Pizza

Popped in here to treat a friend for his birthday. Between the three of us we ordered three 16" Pizzas, (From the menu) Sausage Pizza - Peasants Pantry Summer Sausage with tomato sauce, mozzarella, White pizza - Smoked Peasants Pantry Chorizo sausage, arugula, walnut with mozzarella, smoked gouda, honey, balsamic reduction Mushroom Pizza - Our own blend of roasted mushrooms and garlic with tomato sauce, mozzarella, swiss We also had two french pressed coffees and a beer. In case you are wondering we are chubby but there were lots of leftovers! Service: (5/5) Our server, Ryan, was quick and brought us a bottle of water and filled out glasses on a number of occasions. It is nice having the water at the table so you don't have to wait but it is also nice to have them fill your water when they come to check on you. The server also let us know that the mushroom was his favorite once I suggested it. After bringing the water and drinks our order was taken and food took about 10 minutes with a total meal time at about 45 minutes. I consider this important so people on lunch can come have a good dining experience within a hour lunch break. With the current amount of seats I don't see it very difficult to serve even a packed house with two servers. Food: (4/5) The menu seemed to be in its early stages with salad, pizza, and desert options. The pizzas come in a personal pan 9" and 16" sizes. The pizza here is thin crust and cooked in an oven at the back the of store. There were flames in the back of it so maybe its wood fired, maybe not but it was pretty good pizza. The pizza had a nice crisp yet chewy give to it and a really nice gestalt on the bottom. The server offered us chili flakes and chili oil which I accepted and enjoyed the spicy boost. We all agreed that the Mushroom Pizza was the best tasting, followed by the white pizza, and the slightly disappointing sausage pizza. The mushroom pizza had a perfect texture and it was the pizza with the least slices left after dinner. The white pizza tasted good and never "weird" as I thought it would be. Might use a bit more sauce. The Sausage pizza was a bit of a letdown as there was more sausage on the white pizza and I would have to say the toppings were stingy on this one. The crust on the sausage was also overdone compared to the others which is not Sausage Pizza's fault so we can forgive it this once. Since the Sausage pizza is actually a dollar more than the others I expect more meat next time! Decor: (5/5) Wonderful. Big Windows, Open space, large real wood tables, and decent chairs makes this place a nice combination of eat in and take out. With the current configuration of tables around the outside edges and a large almost sharable table in the centre there is a lot of room for takeout people to come in without disturbing the other guests. My guesstimate is they could fit 30-40 people in here and I wouldn't be surprised if they put a few more tables in down the line. When you enter you get a full glimpse directly at the fired oven on the opposite corner with a nice checkered tile backing in the kitchen. Even though this place has a Hydrostone look on the outside it does not have the slightly cramped feeling inside typical of Hydrostone buildings (in my opinion). I would like to say that this place has street parking only. We found a decent place to park on the side street beside the natural food store and is possibly the closest place to do so. Value: (4/5) Compared to Salvatore's Pizza, which is the most direct competitor for my premium pizza dollars I would say mothers pizza is closely matched. With this attention to detail I am sure they wanted to offer competitive prices from the get go. The price at Mother's is slightly less with the diversity and toppings being slightly less as well compared to Salvatore's. $16 for a 16" pizza ($17 for the Sausage) is a good price. The French pressed coffees were decent at $3 each and you knew it was fresh so it was worth the extra buck. We left with about a pizza's worth of leftovers and it tasted good a few hours later too! Overall (4/5) As this is an early review I may change it upon revisiting. Overall I really liked the vibe of this place and the pizza was quite good with the crust being the best of its type. This place would have gotten a five star rating if it had more toppings on the Sausage, less burned crust on the one pizza, and a bit more selection in the menu. The service was excellent and the decor was done well and the price was good. I can see this place being a perfect place to have share some pizza and a beer. Or maybe two.

Tony's absolutely delivers when it comes to classic late-night comfort food. The pizza was loaded with toppings, perfectly cheesy, and had that ideal balance of a crisp crust with a soft, satisfying bite. Every slice held together and didn't feel skimpy -- exactly what you want when you're sharing (or silently judging who's eating more). The donair was just as solid: warm, well-seasoned meat, fresh toppings, and that sweet donair sauce that brings everything together. Messy in the best way, and packed with flavor from the first bite to the last napkin. The vibe at Tony's is casual and welcoming -- no frills, no pretending to be something it's not. Service was quick and friendly, even while the place was busy, and the food came out hot and fresh. While Gavin and Mikaela were doing their thing, I was fully locked in on the food -- and Tony's made it easy. Reliable, filling, and exactly what you're craving, whether you're on a date, with friends, or proudly third wheeling like me. Five stars. Third wheel approved. -- The Muncher

I'm not one to disagree with people when they tell me to try something local or something a place is known for. We were determined to find a donair during our hop-on/hop-off tour of Halifax. When doing our Google search we found that Tony's Donair and Pizza was about a block from one our stops and is noted for their donairs. Ok, easy enough. Our walk from our hop-on/hop-off stop was an easy one along a residential street and then along a larger thoroughfare. I was genuinely excited to try a donair, after hearing so much about them....and, incidentally, I was STARVING. Tony's Donair & Pizza is your typical hometown restaurant the apparently does more takeout than it does eat-in. There are only 2 or 3 tables, and you can tell the location is aged. Your order is placed at the counter and wait for your order to be called. There is no drink fountain, but a selection of beverages in a cooler. (YEAH, for Dr. Pepper®). I didn't know what to expect from a donair, really. Just that it's like a Gyro, but it has a sweeter sauce on it. I was not, in any way, disappointed. It was heavily stuffed with pita meat, whatever the mysterious sweet sauce is, and onions. A side of onion rings rounded out the meal nicely. The food was fresh and very tasty. The staff was friendly enough while appearing to be in a hurry to get something else done. It was around lunch time so I'm sure they had a lot of takeout orders to get made. All in all, a good visit. I can tell all of the people who said I had to get a donair that I did and I loved it.

They very clearly don't bother reading the requests, because they had full veg on the sub, and onions on the burger. But that itself wasn't the problem... The food was just terrible. The sub fell apart upon opening, with the cheese and meat both falling off the bread immediately. Bread was both overly toasted and way too soft to hold the ingredients, and apparently the donair sauce was on the side with the burger and fries, something I wasn't told of. Reason I didn't look? Cause the entire container was open and just tossed in the bag without any care. The burger was overcooked and tasted of the grill, with the only reason it was edible at all being the okay bacon on top. The fries were actually alright, the only reason I wouldn't give it a straight 1, as they were crispy and tasted good, but I also know for a fact that they're the same kind of frozen fries you can get at the grocery store. But hey, not gonna judge, they were the best thing I got. Got two portions of donair sauce, they were okay, but again, wasn't informed they were even in the bag. All in all...Awful food from a place I know can make really good stuff. I understand it was Christmas, but if you can't make the same quality of food, there's no reason to be open at all during the holidays.
