If you want to show up and go hard, you can. If you're a parent squeezing in classes whenever your schedule allows, that's just as welcome. Nobody makes you feel like you don't belong either way. This gym became a third space for me and I will miss everyone I trained with. Highly recommend to anyone considering BJJ, whether you're competing or just want a great workout and a good group of people.

Leo goes out of his way to create a safe training environment (he'll match sparring partners himself) regardless of skill, size, or gender. The instructors are great and care about your development. Underneath the surface, you'll find a small, tight knit group of competitors that train intensely and compete at an extremely high level. The instruction of the seminar was very organized and informative, including a brief history of martial arts for us beginners. Initially, I was wondering how he could fill 4 hours, but there was no lag at all -- covering escape, submission, and pinning maneuvers. I wish I was able to pick up the moves as easily as others, but some maneuvers had a lot of steps to it and seemed a bit complicated for a non-active chica like myself. This is the best place to learn judo and there is also priority on safety, since we drill the form and falling techniques each class. There are also strength and conditioning classes that have HIIT training, which I highly recommend for fitness. I joined because I moved to the South Bay area and was thrilled to find Nakano Judo. I didn't have the opportunity to do it while I was young though I was always a fan watching it on the Olympics. Judo improved quality of life for me in the Bay Area and continues to improve my physical and mental health. Everyone is very welcoming and friendly here. There were so many judo stars during the judo trip and they are great examples as human beings too. The trip that sensei Nakano leads is a great opportunity to meet judoka from Japan and around the world, as well as experience Japanese culture and food.
