I needed to replace my bathtub, so I searched Craigslist and Google for a contractor. After reading the reviews, I decided to hire Kevin. I paid him a $1,500 deposit on December 7, and he agreed to start the job on December 20. At that point, everything seemed fine, and he was very responsive by text. On December 17, I checked in to confirm the start date, and Kevin asked to move it to December 21 instead. On December 19, I texted again to confirm the 21st--no response. I followed up on December 20, still no response. I also called multiple times with no answer. December 21 came and went with no show and no call. After repeatedly trying to reach him, Kevin finally texted late that night claiming he had been in an "accident," which is why he disappeared. I replied asking either for my deposit back or a clear start date. Then--silence again for about two days. Kevin eventually messaged, apologized, and said he would start after Christmas, setting a new start date of December 26. Once again, December 26 came and went with no show, no call, and no response. On December 28, I sent him a clear message stating that if I did not receive my deposit back within 24 hours, I would file a lawsuit and a claim under the Colorado Consumer Protection Act. He responded within minutes with excuses, saying he couldn't find workers during the holidays. At this point, it's clear this is not bad timing--it's unprofessional and dishonest behavior.
