I liked fish fingers, fish cakes and tuna from a can. I didn't like seeing my mother prepare proper fish with their fishy scales and their bones and those eyes, especially the eyes. I became vegetarian. Today the fish eyes don't bother me so much, and I am an avid believer in buying local and prefer my flesh eating friends to source better meat and fish, and eat less often. I am not alone. This is one of the reasons that Ashton's thrives. They sell great fresh fish of a wide variety and you can buy it right in the heart of Cardiff. Not ALL of it is local, mind: 'Fish and shellfish is sourced from every fishing port in the UK. Fresh fish is also purchased from various parts of the world, including Alaska, Norway, Chile, Saudi Arabia and Seychelles. The company will also mail order the Welsh delicacy lavarbread.' So if these things bother you, check first. It is one of the largest fish retail outlets in the United Kingdom, employing around 25 staff and their other catering supply business supplies many of the major hotels and restaurants in the Cardiff area. They should know what they are doing too, Ashton's set up shop way back in 1800 and has been in the Central Market since 1890. As well as fish, Ashton's also sell poultry and game. During the game season, wild boar, kangaroo, ostrich, emu, pheasants, partridge, grouse, wild duck and rabbits are available. You can see a full stoclist for fish, shellfish and meat on their website. They also list loads of recipes on their site, here's their one for Smoky Topped Fish Ingredients 4 x 170g (6oz) thick coley or cod fillet, fresh or frozen salt and blackpepper knob of butter dash lime or lemon juice 60g (2oz) cheese, grated 4 rashers of grilled bacon, chopped slices of lemon, to garnish Method Preheat the grill Place the fish onto a lightly greased grill pan. Season. Dot with the butter and sprinkle with lime or lemon juice. Grill for 8-10 minutes (15-20 if frozen). Sprinkle with the cheese and top with bacon. Return to the grill and continue to cook for a further 1-2 minutes. Serve with stir fry vegetables. Serves 4 Hungry? You know where to go.

As you enter the market you will be greeted by the same smell of fresh fish that has filled my childhood memories of this place. That smell was constantly fluctuating up my youthful nostrils was coming from Ashton's Fishmongers. Your nose will spot them as soon as you enter the market on the entrance located by the Church of St John the Baptist. They're a market trader that offers every variety of fresh fish you could ever want to lay your hands on behind a counter on top of sea of ice. What a cute little place- the ambiance and the people are welcoming and very friendly…read more I had their warm goat cheese salad with a swirl of beetroot reduction and caramelized nuts. What a surprise! I also got one of their specials - Halloumi Burger which was equally fresh and tasty. I highly recommend eating here. We did not have reservations, but the place fills up quickly since it's so close to the port Isaac harbor where most of the fishing scenes for Doc Martin are filmed.

They also excel at that delicate balance between doting service and just bringing food out. Being here early in the season meant we were first to be seated for dinner, but if you're going to be here during the height of the season, book ahead - like two weeks ahead. The fish and chips I ordered were the best I've ever had, with the mashy peas tasting fresher than their name deserves. The breeding on the fish was perfectly crispy, which meant the fish inside was steamed to perfection. My dining companion's white crab linguine was also a work of art. Generous chunks of crab were steeped in a rich sauce to adhere perfectly to the pasta. Fortunately, she couldn't finish the plentiful portion, so I was enlisted to help. It was a happy duty. We were recommended a local cider, which was tasty and snappy without being overly sweet. I opted for a Guinness, which, when activated with the ultrasound exciter, brought out the full flavor of the brew, as well as the rich texture. We interacted with at least four members of the waitstaff, and found them each charming in their own way. Friendly, flavorful, and fun. What more could you ask for in a dinner experience?

Besides some fast food options they serve really well made seafood. We had the shrimp (with cheese fries) and a pot of mussels. Both cooked to perfection, fresh and nicely spiced (and not over-spiced). Staff was friendly, food arrived fast - despite the place being packed. Our English Bulldog was welcome in the outside area. Great food, fair prices. Fantastic location. What else you need. A really good place to grab a bit, a beer - before or after visiting the beach.

This time round we were placed a table at the centre of the dining room and I had a fine view of the kitchen and the staff, as they dedicatedly went about their business. My partner had a view of the bay out front. For starters I went for the Beef Carpaccio with Watercress, White Truffle Oil & Reggiano Parmesan and my partner the Seared Fowey Scallops with Crispy Belly Pork, Celeriac Puree & Caper Sauce. The Carpaccio was very tasty and I got plenty of it. I cleared my plate of it all and its accompaniments. My partners enjoyed his Scallops with Pork Belly. For the mains I opted for the Risotto of Summer with Parmesan Crisps and my partner the L.A.B. Tiger Prawn & Spiced Monkfish Curry. I loved the risotto, it was full of crunchy green vegetables and the risotto was a lovely creamy consistency. I would recommend it. My partner really enjoyed his curry and thought it was top notch for a restaurant that wasn't a curry house. We ordered the San Antonio Pinot Grigio, which was a grand wine to go with our meal. It was £12.50 For dessert we both ordered the Chocolate Fondant. It came with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and chocolate ganache truffle. The fondant was fine, nothing to write home about and we both have had much better. The ice cream went with it perfectly though. However the ganache was too much with the fondant. It was just too much chocolate and cocoa for one dessert. The staff amused me. They appeared to be all young hip surfer types working for the summer in the ideal location for their outdoor pursuits. Our waitress was very charming and helpful, as all the staff appeared to be. It was a pleasant night and we will be back, if we are in the area again.
