Morris Jones as pricey as it is - is worth the big bucks. Located on Chapel St, this large restaurant and bar is truly a spectacular place to dine or have drinks at - whether it be for a work function (they have a closed off function area or the upstairs which can be booked), a special day that you want to celebrate, after work drinks, birthday drinks, romantic dates - go here! Not for the cheapstakes though as cocktails start at 20 and beers and wines are quite pricey. The outdoor area with its super warm heaters is much warmer than the frigid interior. I couldn't part with my puffy jacket despite being seated inside. The seating area is separated from the bar area by the bar. The kitchen enclosed in glass is visible with the chef and staff busy making exquisite dishes. The hipster/kooky waitstaff are quite eccentric. We booked online via dimmi for 6.30pm on a Friday evening and received the early bird special - a drink each (choose from a pinot grigio, chardonnay, shiraz, beer or pinot noir or soft drinks) for free. The pinot grigio though recommended by our bubbly uber friendly Irish waitress was like the generic pub house wine! Between the two of us, we got the chesnut gnocchi (recommended by our friendly waitress), the barramundi and the lamb rump. We started off with some complimentary sourdough bread which arrived warm (what a pleasant surprise) and the most delicious honey butter (OMG WE HAD TO HAVE MORE AND MORE). It has the consistency of mousse and glides easily onto the bread and omg it melted as soon as it touched the bread. My friend and I just gobbled it up and though I don't even like butter with vegemite being my preferred spread, we asked for more bread. The butter is sprinkled with black salt - OMG yes heaven in my mouth. The chestnut gnocchi is infused with creamy chestnut on a bed of cauliflower mousse served with purple cauliflower which is said to have the consistency of cous cous as described by the waitstaff. I'm not sure about tasting cous cous but yes it was the most delicious gnocchi I had ever had. Sweet yet slightly savoury. The lamb rump arrived with a fermented yet sweet tasting baby carrots. The lamb was quite tough as it was slightly pink. The japanese fermented flavour went so well with the lamb. I couldn't put my fork down and chatted with the morsels in my mouth (how rude of me). Though I had room for dessert, my wallet said NO. The nitro gelato spectacle with smoke and sparks was definitely a delight to look at. I kept saying to my dining companion that Morris Jones is definitely heaps better than Dinner by Heston. Each dish was described to us when presented to our table. Each dish was unique with an infusion of flavours. The high ceilings, the interesting art (boobs on one wall, butterflies on the opposite wall - B&B), the eccentrically dressed waitstaff, and the quirky menu lead to an amazing experience. What I did find funny was that when I first presented myself to the restaurant I was asked what I wanted even though I gave them my name and my booking details. The man behind the counter was like "so what do you want?" and I said "TO BE SEATED?! maybe!" plenty of free parking on chapel street after 6pm or 3P parking near Thomas St. Can't wait to go back and try some more. :)

Moris Jones is not my favorite place. It has lovely and attentive wait staff and its design, interior and exterior spaces are comfortable and well spaced. But the crowd that comes there is not the best of what chapel st has to offer. Lots of yuppies who are rude, inconsiderate and pushy. I will have to go back at a different time and hopefully there will be a different crowd!

Good coffee and cake. Try the pistachio one! I'll go back to try the food as it looks like a good range.

Four stars alone for the renovations on this pub. I'll admit wholeheartedly that my desire to visit…read morethe Prahran Hotel was not even remotely for a lunch of 'pub-grub' but rather to take a sticky beak at Justin Norththrop's architectural make-over using concrete water pipes. His vision has turned the dining area into a visual feast with dining pods where you dine within the cut-out of the waterpipes. There's pods for two or for a more bountiful group the first floor pods are ample for a party of six. Unfortunately, it seems that along with tarting up their appearance to be something pretty special, their menu has been left by the wayside or at least it seemed that way when we dined in for lunch. $50 for a chicken parmigiana, my eggplant parmigiana, a ginger beer and mineral water was, honestly, a bit rich. The items were still at a counter meal level, which is a-okay, but just not for that price tag. But as I said, I didn't come for the food and my expectations of the space far exceeded my disappointment at the food.

Ummmmm.... What happened to Prahran Hotel?…read more This was generally my favourite pub in town (I live down the road) and I used to love coming in here anytime for a nice pint and some classic pubfare (fish and chips, burgers, etc). I came in this weekend, to find out they've switched up the menu with a new chef that now leans more towards a French/Italian wine bar, or something. There was no more fish and chips (instead, a fancy fish of the day), there was no more pints of peroni on tap (I used to LOVE these), and what used to be an amazing burger, was really quite bad and dry compared to normal. The fries were skinny and uncooked/half hard when they used to be fat and crispetc.. also why the new plates, where are the wooden trays? I liked those :( We also ordered some pickles to start, thinking that we'd get some gherkins for the burger or something, but instead it was like shavings in a vinagrette sauce etc. And the music and the vibe (white table clothes, jazz/Mediterranean music etc) was leaning more towards a french wine bar? When we asked they said a few months ago they've tried to redo the place/menu... Why? What happened? I usually love coming to Prahran Hotel for a classic pub experience (albeit a little modern), but now it felt more like a pricey wine bar with a fancier chef who didn't have a have much interest in basic menu items. And to top it off, $160 for two people, for a pretty bad meal, didn't feel great. All of a sudden it felt like this otherwise tried-and-true spot had an identity complex or something :/ I'd come again just to see if it was a one-off, but if this is the norm/a new direction the place is trying to move in, it's not at all what I personally looked for when I used to come here etc

I prepared a collection of must-try stops during the month of my visit, and from my research, Daughter in Law made the list. It also happens to be around the corner from my hotel so it ended up being the first restaurant I tried after arriving at the hotel and getting settled. I wanted something comforting and guaranteed to be a delightful food experience and Indian food never disappoints for me and my cravings. Daughter in Law went above and beyond all expectations of the every day delicious Indian restaurant. You'll know it from first glance as you approach the restaurant and see the colorful tables and neon sign. Everything about the ambience took me back to our Mama Speaks hotel in Rome...my absolute favorite for the fantastic indulgent, maximalist, colorful decor. Everything about the space says party with a sophisticated twist. The second time we went here, there was a birthday happening for a grandma with her large family there. This place is a gem. All I can say is hopefully I get to have a birthday here someday. It was a party and we were all smiles. We ordered the Hiramasa Kingfish Ceviche You won't regret this choice It was heaven in a clamshell. I could have eaten several of these as a meal. It was a fresh as fresh gets scallop ceviche with the perfect Indian spin of flavors. I don't know how I didn't get a picture of it except to say most likely because we ate it too fast for pictures. We followed this with the Ball of Happiness (Gol Gappa). A crisp hollowed out orb served with a layered shot of the classic mint, tamarind, and chutney flavor sauces that are meant to be poured into the orb and popped into your mouth for a flavor explosion. It was fun and delicious but I personally would have gone for another scallop en croute in place of this. Though it's worth a go! For drinks, I ordered a Passionfruit Spritz. I was worried it may be too sweet but it turned out to be just right and very refreshing. The little mermaid was a fun touch and my daughter wanted to take her home. The Mango Lassi was perfect, authentic, and not too sweet. There was only 2 of us, so as much as I wanted to try the Rogan Josh, we shared the Chicken Tikka Masala instead. It was delicious phenomenal. So rich and flavorful, with a brightness and tang to it that made it hard to stop eating. Incredible flavor! The garlic naan was of course, woodfired crisp and perfectly soft where it should be when pulled apart. Daughter in Law is going to be a regular spot for the next couple of months and anytime I'm traveling here in Melbourne!

I've been here so many times and I love the place - there's outdoor seating along Chapel St, there's a bar area inside which is good for a beer with mates and there's a more fancy restaurant space which has been spruced up recently. There's also an upstairs area too which is for functions but I didn't check that out. We were in for dinner and I fancied something light so just had a platter of dips which was lovely. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was the falafel chips it's served with but no big deal. It was actually a generous portion and would definitely do for a main at dinner. I tried some of the chicken parma and it was lovely as well, nice and crispy.
