You would never know the amazing venue that sits above you if you walked past The Spotted Mallard and hadn't heard of it. There might be a sign on the footpath beckoning you to come in but a glance inside would just reveal a large old wooden staircase leading up to who knows what. And who wants to climb stairs, right?
Well lucky for you that you've seen this review and as of this sentence you know that yes, those stairs are definitely worth climbing. Once inside you will be greeted by a large open room with a mish mash of seating and tables, a bar on one side and a stage on the other. Time your visit right and you'll catch a band playing on stage. The bands I've seen here have been bluesy and jazzy with a mix of everything else thrown in and have suited the venue wonderfully.
There is a great selection of drinks on offer here, but as anyone can tell from a large majority of my check-ins, I'm here for the beer. There is a great choice of beer on tap and plenty more in bottles too.
The food here has been fantastic whenever I've tried it. From memory, smaller plates are all $15, larger ones $20 and burgers $19. The burgers are huge and everything else is well worth the money and a little different than your usual pub food (mushroom pie, beef cheeks and my personal fave, Duck & Chips).
There's a balcony that you can sit on that overlooks Sydney Rd, a pool table up the back and the whole place just has a nice friendly feel to it. It's a great venue to grab a big table with a group of friends, sit back and relax on a lazy Saturday afternoon on the balcony or to grab a meal and watch a band and its fast become one of my favorite locals. read more
