I had the Parma I've had A LOT of Parmas in my time and Railway's stacks up with the best of them. Fresh (non-packet) Parmas ALWAYS make the difference. A little too much cheese and sauce but, who am I to complain??!! A great feed.

Sunday roast: roast pork with Apple gravy

Another old pub in the heart of South Melbourne serving pub classics. Standard line up of burgers, Parma, steaks, fish & chips, plus a few nods to modern pub fare. Staff extremely welcoming and friendly, definitely a highlight of this place. The bar side has a couple of tvs with the footy on, for those wanting a quiet meal dining room is a good choice, with a lovely fireplace. Outdoor courtyard is spacious, though given the cold, miserable July weather we stayed safely tucked inside. Decent drinks selection: standard as well as craft beers, ciders, a sizable wines by the glass menu with local and imported wines. Food wise - pretty standard, giant Parma was tasty, with crinkled cut chips. Steak sandwich on Turkish bread looked pretty nice - though I did not try it. I opted for the Sunday roast of the day: roast pork with Apple gravy. Pork was on the dry side, though the crackling was lovely and crispy. Apple gravy very salty. Assorted of roast vegies: potato, pumpkin, carrots and steamed broccoli. Serviceable, nothing to write home about. Overall average old school pub, not trying to be what it's not, which is a part of the charm. There are plenty of choices in South Melbourne but I think it's the general vibes and staff that'd keep the punters coming back.

A cute traditional pub in South Melbourne. It is an interesting destination to come to for an engagement party on a warm Saturday night; however once you head into their outdoor backyard it is all starting to make a lot of sense as to why. It is cute, and you would be forgiven for thinking that you are partying out at someone's backyard at someone's house in the inner city, rather than in an inner city of an oasis pub. My my how times have changed. The eating comprises of booths, and the trees are abundant and somehow magical; like your looking up at the stars. I felt sorry for the DJ though; looking a little cramped in a corner; however the space was still abundant even though it didn't appear to be with fairly attentive service. The food was spectacular, and an easy place to get drunk: just watch the tram tracks for later. Inside the pub is a completely different and quiet world. Back to the food. Their fish and chips with a lemon wedge wrapped in a paper cup was just divine. The fried fish was battered perfectly. Although a few drunken souls, the night was enjoyed by all.

The last time I came past this pub it was closed, but that could be because it was either being renovated (as is happening with a number of pubs around the place) or it was simply closed over the New Years break (which is quite odd for a pub). However, this time it wasn't closed, so I stopped by for a beer (which was always going to happen). It was quite fortuitous that it was happy hour when I arrived, which meant pints for half-price, so I ended up getting a Coopers Pale Ale (though there were quite a few other fine beers available). There was quite a nice beer garden out the back, though half the tables were reserved for special people, and the rest were occupied. Fortunately I could sit on the edge of the garden. There were also a couple of really cool looking chairs inside.

Starters: hot wings with blue cheese sauce + chicken bites with sweet n sour dip

No one informed us about any policy. We paid for the bottle with 5% service charge which I do not think they deserved. We had a sudden work call at 11.30pm and grabbed the bottle to go, only for the staff to chase us to the front of the bar to inform us that they do not have a takeaway license. For christ sake, we already had bought the bottle!! Though it's alright, we respect policy. They highlighted that they needed to keep the bottle in the establishment. We asked if we could come back and finish it. They said they would keep our bottle. We rushed back to our hotel (Marriott- 200m away for the call). When we returned at 11.58pm, they had already thrown our bottle away. Unbelievable! They were quick to receive our money but equally quick to throw our experience out the window. No doubt, we returned almost at closing times but throwing our wine before closing time - if you wanna go by the book, that is still not your closing time. When we raised our grievances to the staff, she said she told us about closing time at 12 midnight. However, we emphasised that she should have let us know about the takeaway policy and license. Had we known, we would not have ordered a bottle. She looked at us blankly and simply replied "feedback received, but we do not allow anyone in after 12, so you have to leave". Quite honestly, ChatGPT / Claude / Grok could have conveyed more empathy. I am not a VIP customer nor am I a high spender. That being said, I value places with a human connection and empathy, and would regularly visit such places with joy and happiness multiple times. This place is not one of them. For this reason, I will never visit again. If you think likewise, and value authenticity and a true Aussie welcome, you would not visit this place. I hate to give negative reviews but please spend your money elsewhere.

From the moment you walk in, there's a buzz that makes the place feel alive without being overwhelming. It strikes a great balance between upscale and relaxed, making it perfect for a date night or a fun evening out. The warm lighting and eclectic design add to the charm and make you want to linger. Service was friendly, attentive, and well-paced throughout the night. The staff were knowledgeable about the menu, checked in on us at the right moments, and made the whole experience feel effortless and welcoming. Every dish we ordered was excellent -- not a single miss. We started with the Cauliflower & Mozzarella Croquettes, which were crispy on the outside and perfectly creamy inside. The Grilled King Prawns were flavorful and cooked just right, while the Kingfish Ceviche was fresh, bright, and beautifully balanced. The Stracciatella & Heirloom Tomatoes was simple yet outstanding, letting the quality of the ingredients shine. For mains, the Duck Breast was cooked perfectly and full of rich flavor, and the Lamb Backstrap was tender and well-seasoned. The Pecorino & Ricotta Ravioli was comforting and delicate, while the Seafood Linguine stood out with generous portions of seafood and a beautifully balanced sauce. The Honey Glaze Carrots were the perfect side -- sweet, savory, and executed flawlessly. Overall, State of Grace delivers on every level -- ambience, service, and food. An exceptional spot that lives up to the hype, and one we'd absolutely return to on our next visit to Melbourne.

It's the decor from extravagant chandeliers to deer heads with pearl necklaces; it's beautifully eclectic. I had an old fashion and it had the right mix of orange and bitters. I also ordered the burger which was decent and the fries were hot and crispy. The night I visited there was a live singer playing tunes. Service was quick and friendly. Even the ordering is eclectic as you order electronically (QR) pasted to a library book. This place is worth a visit.
