When my family and I visited the Morpeth Arms, it appeared it hasn't made the tourist lists yet - even after the article in Atlas Obscura. That's a good thing. Service was friendly - we had dinner in the upstairs spying room, but most people were on the main floor. Once we made our presence known, it was easy to get served upstairs. And do try the spying room - replete with intelligence documents and trivia on the walls, and books on spies and MI6 in the bookshelves. And of course MI6 itself faces the pub from across the Thames. The food was typical British fare - and I had the best (and only) meat pie of the trip here. We loved the well worn and well loved feel, and the fact that children were not an issue. read more

Not a bad little pub, not bad at all. Great location over looking the river and on a clear day the sun streams through the windows. It feels like a really old house that should secret passages and stuff. It has gorgeous narrow stairs and little landing and poky rooms leading off of it. I recall it had a good but not extensive wine selection and the little food that I tried (wedges and chips) wasn't too bad - if that could be used as any kind of measuring gauge. We came here as there's some kind of London Pub card-stamping thing going on that results in my friend who's local getting some free pints so we were dragged across London to various places, the Morpeth Arms being the second. Such nice bar staff, tasty bar snacks (tapas style, with 3 for £9 offers and the like), and a host of board games for those in need of a bit of recreational entertainment, this is a great place to while away an afternoon. read more

It was probably not a good idea to walk here from the West End on Sunday afternoon. It was 25°C and I had eaten so much Dim Sum at the Crispy Duck (see review below) that I had the delightful experience of involuntarily regurgitating my Won Tons every fifteen minutes. (I really need to stop over-ordering at that place...and over-eating.) Nonetheless, my companion and I thought a brisk walk to the Morpeth Arms would help alleviate the guilt of consuming the calorie intake of a Sumo wrestler. Admittedly, this is a very pleasant walk along the north bank of the Thames, past Parliament and through the Victoria Tower Gardens. Wow was I ready for a pint when we arrived. My boxers had transformed into a thong as a consequence of our stifling hike. This is a Young's pub and has a fine selection of ales on tap, including Kew Gold, Special, and Wells Bombardier - all well kept and served at a good temperature. We didn't sample the food here (obviously), but the menu is broad and reasonably priced. Our main reason for coming here, however, was to sit outside in the sun with a river breeze running through our hair and drying our undergarments. Sit on the Ponsonby Place side if you can to avoid the traffic on Millbank. read more

Well, I wasn't super keen to celebrate yet another anniversary of the big 30, but as popular demand was getting overwhelming, I had to oblige. I wanted something with outdoor seating and river views without the annoyance of the tourist hordes. I work in Covent Garden and I have about as much tourist horde on a daily basis as I can take. Seriously. Give me one tourist and I'll happily give directions and smile at Sole Tourist. A pack of 50+ school kids from Italy walking two abreast across the entire length of CG, all the while sharing headphones and I just want to go Juggernaut. On children. Anyway, this came up in my search and seemed like we'd be safe from the river tourism this far down and from the usual Friday night suits that ram central London. Reading the first review again, I'm pretty amused that I was sold on Morepeth Arms by its undergarment drying properties. My needs were a bit different: Pimms, good ales, outdoor seating and no trendy wendys. Check, check, and check! It's mostly a locals pub, with the nearby office workers and the occasional local resident. All my revellers were confused and thought I had changed jobs (you don't work around here now, do you?). I guess it's not the sort of pub you would travel across London for, but I liked it better than the the majority of bars on the Strand. If Yelp did halfsies, this would be 3 1/2; what I refer to as Right Up My Alley. Hmmm. Sounds wrong. But I'll stand by it. All in all, a nice casual birthday spot where I was the prettiest girl with the prettiest dress--what more could a birthday girl ask for? Bonus, it's on Vauxhall Bridge, so a quick nip across the bridge and we were home within the half hour. If I pub-crawl walk home from work, Morepeth Arms will definitely be hit up. I used to work a 3 minute walk from the Morpeth and can confirm it's a perfect spot for some after-work drinks, especially on a sunny evening when the crowd spills out onto the pavement. Definitely don't go out of your way to come to the Morpeth but it's nice enough if you're passing, and if it's a chilly day they have upstairs seating with sofas. My favourite 2 things about the Morpeth however, are the picture of the Queen Mum pulling a pint behind the bar and, even better, the tales that the pub is haunted. A lot of Millbank is set above what used to be a prison and the cells ran underground. Legend has it that the ghosts of the prisoners and guards still wander the basement of the Morpeth....wwwhhhhoooooooooooooo!!!! read more

Went here for an afternoon pint and fish and chips. The location is perfect - away from the hustle and bustle of Westminster but close enough to the bus and the Thames that you're not going out of your way for good food. As opposed to some pubs I've been into, there were lots of well-priced options on the menu, from burgers to salad to Sunday roast. My friend and I both got fish and chips, which were perfect - not too many chips, but that's ok. The fish itself was well fried and not greasy. Good charm, very friendly service, sunny and convenient location - I'm a fan! read more

Passed this place several times on my way home from Time Out Card screenings (recommended!) at Millbank Cinema. And, just as often, snuck in to use their water closet. Finally stopped for an actual beverage though a few weeks ago. Nice little place for a drinky-poo, reasonably priced too. Turns out they're more than just a convenient convenience! read more

A Young's pub situated just off Vauxhall Bridge and a couple of minutes walk from Pimlico tube station. The Morpeth Arms sits on the north bank of the Thames overlooking the MI6 building and just along from The Tate Gallery. Iinside, it is a very traditional pub, with a bit of history too. Prisoners were once held in holding cells in the basement for a nearby prison, and myth has it that The Morpeth Arms is haunted by these prisoners! I always like a pub with a story to tell! The Morpeth also makes the most of it's location opposite MI6, naming one of it's rooms 'The spying Room'! Food is served here, and seating is available outside facing the river (and the MI6 building). Overall, the Morpeth Arms is a very pleasant pub, the staff are friendly and it is general not too crowded. read more

A pleasant, old-school pub, close to the river in Pimlico, with an interesting history. Seemingly, this was the favoured pub of the staff from the old Millbank prison ( long since demolished), from where prisoners used to be shipped to Australia. Cursory sampling suggests the beer is well kept; the food menu is fairly middle of the road, in the mode of burgers , sandwiches, and fish and chips, but there are one or two nice touches ( e.g. properly traditional whitebait, and sharing platters such as the sausage platter-13 pounds- which is a good counterpoint/ballast for a few jars). read more

Prisoners used to be held in the cellars here before being transported to the colonies. 1 died and is rumoured to haunt the vaults. Of course this is the kind of tale much more suited to a dark and cold winter's evening. On a beautiful Sunday afternoon, it just doesn't cut it. Still the pub does have an interesting history, originally built in 1845 to cater to the thirsts of prison warders who worked nearby. Youngs pub means ale and usually good ale and a good selection of ales. It didn't disappoint. They serve food too but I didn't try any. It has a nice location down near the river butalthough there is nothing really wrong with this pub I just can't think of anything in particular to recommend it either. A lovely pub where my boyfriend and I stopped to take a break from our walk around this area of London. Right near the Tate Britain, it's a great place to have a little lunch and a pint. Apparently the basement is haunted - there's remnants of an old prison down there! We saw no ghosts but hey, who knows? They have CCTV down there showing in the pub - so if there ARE any ghosts, you can see them on the monitor. I made lunch out of their soup of the day, which comes with bread and butter, and shared some chips with my boyfriend. The soup was really surprisingly good - clearly homemade. I believe it was broccoli-stilton and it was great stuff. Hot and creamy, great tangy bite from the cheese and lovely fresh vegetable taste. The chips were hot and crispy too. We had a comfortable seat in the back and lingered a little bit with our pints. Food definitely above average and the atmosphere is comfortable. Great place to stop if you're passing by. read more

My brother enjoyed 2 large Arbroath Smokie fishcakes with poached egg & Hollandaise sauce with capers whilst my gammon, eggs & chips went down fine once I'd trimmed a fair amount of fat off the meat. Lovely pub very close to the Tate Britain. Excellent selection of beers but the real star is the food. Forget the disgusting subpar food you get in the "historical" London pubs that are always romanticized by tourists and locals alike, the chef here has elevated British food to a higher level. The Ploughman lunch platter is a delightful, fresh and balanced revisitation of a classic and so is the rest of the food served here. An excellent plus is that the menu is also totally Vegetarian friendly. read more

A bit kitschy due to all the MI6 references (since the top British spy agency is right across the Thames), but not off-putting. Also is in close-ish proximity to the Tate London if you fancy a walk. The food was fried, fried, fried. Sigh. So that was a bit of a bummer. A quaint local pub. Not worth the trip, but worth a stop-by if you're in the area. read more

A very nice Youngs pub. Friendly staff, one even asked about my broken hand. The food looked tasty though I didn't try it. It wasn't crowded, so I went upstairs to see their stunning river views, not that stunning unless you want to see the buildings of the South Bank, including the M.I.6 building. The seats out the front catch the sun, so gets crowded in summer. read more

I really like this pub. I don't know why as it's nothing special but the beer (Youngs) is well-kept and well-priced. I've only eaten the bar snacks but they are excellent and, again, well-priced. Just stopped in for a few minutes but found ourselves spending a few enjoyable hours in this delightful old pub. It is fantastically popular with both young and old apparently. Throngs of young people gathered out front so we took a chance for seating and quiet inside. Much better according to my ears. It's attractive inside with the usual chairs but also yellow leather tufted sofas as well around old worn tables. The walls boasted waifs and either criminal booking or wanted posters. Seems there was once a prison across the street. This was the watering hole for the prison's jailers and wardens! The place is now friends to free men of both sexes and their dogs. We saw the largest shaggy dog imaginable as we exited. We intended to have a quick drink but enjoyed ourselves through two while people watching and taking in the scenes from the Spy Room we discovered up a windy stairway. On the walls upstairs are plans for a remodel project proposed by the owner. The papers and schematics are all approved and no objections were noted according to the dignitaries. With permitting duly submitted and approved renovation began. The year was 1867! And we think dealing with city hall and government red tape is a modern nuisance! Prices, drinks and simple food with great friends old new are good here in this fun historic London tavern. read more

Young's are not my favourite, but the food is good and it's close to the Tate.
