I have been taking lessons and participating in student jazz ensembles at Morningside Music Studio for just over a year, and I love it! The owner and primary teacher, Dan Fox, is a fantastic musician and multi-instrumentalist. He has a great teaching style that gives his students a great comfort level while pushing us to reach beyond what we think are our limitations, The experience level of the student musicians varies quite a bit and Dan does a great job of placing students together who can help each other grow musically. I have also taken a few classes from the other teachers on the Morningside staff and while they all have their individual teaching techniques and styles, they are all fantastic and nurturing, while at the same time pushing the student to achieve more. The studio space is large enough to easily accommodate 6-8 musicians. It has a nice drum kit, an electronic piano, plenty of amps, music stands, PA speakers, mics, etc. It is located in Arlington center, just off Mass Ave - with lots of parking & public buses available. Over the last year, I have performed with my student ensembles 6 times - at both "recital" type performances, open jazz jams sponsored by Morningside, and local Jazz festivals. I am really looking forward to continuing to play my bass with Morningside this coming year! read more

Good music lessons aren't so hard to come by - but creating opportunities for people to participate in ensembles is what really sets Morningside apart. I have been wanting to learn bass for a while now, and I would never have stuck with it, let alone improved so quickly, if I hadn't had access to awesome teachers and the chance to play in an ensemble through Morningside. I've learned something new from all the teachers I've interacted with. And the other members of my ensemble were friendly and super encouraging, even though I was pretty novice at the beginning. I'm so grateful for everything Dan Fox, the owner, and the other folks at Morningside do to bring music into people's lives. read more

Chance to play in small group (all ages!), work on listening, improvising on standards, on regular basis for the musician unable or uncomfortable with dropping into a jam session in public. The chance for Morningside groups to play publicly and local venues is a plus. If you have time in summer months, a week-long workshop always ends with a public gig. Give it try!" read more

Morningside has been an awesome place/experience since I joined about a year and half ago. I had played bass in a rock setting, and started to play jazz bass (whole 'nother animal) with a friend who had experience with Morningside. Morningside "match made" an ensemble of like-minded musicians of comparable skill, and arranged convenient evening sessions with these same "students" and professional jazz instructors (Berklee professors, or professional jazz drummers, guitarists, etc.). We play our tunes, and get immediate/professional critique from the instructor, and have a chance to play out publicly at the end of the "semester." It's a low-stress, high-value experience. I've learned a lot about jazz etiquette, trading "fours", soloing, etc. Dan, the instructors, and the school is top-notch, classy, and professional. Highly recommended. read more

I have been a member of a Morningside jazz ensemble for about a year now. It has been a great experience. Dan has assembled a great group of like-minded musicians who are enjoying each other's company. We have been learning a lot of new tunes, and getting a chance to play "in public" several times a year -- always a great experience. Dan's colleagues on his "faculty" are experienced and also good teachers when Dan can't be there. I look forward to our evenings together every week, and hope for many more to come. read more

The Jazz ensemble program that Dan Fox has put together is a GREAT way for adults to either develop or advance their jazz chops. Dan makes sure that no one is placed in a group that is way above their current level but he also makes sure you're in a group that will stretch your abilities and thus end up becoming a better musician. I am entering my second year with a jazz ensemble and my playing, as well as the performance level of the entire group, has grown tremendously. Tunes we would have shied away from just six months ago are now part of our repertoire. I am very excited to be associated with Morningside and I look forward to being part of this growing program for many years to come. read more
