The bookstore looks wonderful but I just came for the cafe. There's a good amount of floor space dedicated to the cafe with a lot of tables and even a little patio outside. Even with all the space they look pretty busy whenever I pass by, but that's only been on weekends, so it may be quieter during the week. On a weekend afternoon, though, you will not find quiet here. They have all the standard drinks you expect at a coffee shop and lots of fun specials, but the food selection is a little limited. I think they normally serve soup Mon-Sat but they were out when I got there. I got a bagel with schmear, a zebra (chocolate crinkle) cookie, and one of the February specials called "Opposites Attract" which was a raspberry chai latte. Everything I got was pretty good, especially the fresh, chewy zebra cookie. They warmed it up which made it just a little gooey. The raspberry chai was an interesting combination. i wasn't completely sold on the raspberry - I didn't dislike it but probably wouldn't get it again - but I think I liked the chai itself. The baristas and bookstore staff were all welcoming, and the vibe is very inclusive. I've come in and looked around the store a few times, and the staff seems approachable if you need anything but will leave you alone if you're just browsing. read more

Largest independent book store in Indiana. They have SO many latte flavors and can make just about anything. They have drink specials that change every month too :). Their latte prices are also as cheap as they can make them while still making a profit. A latte here would run you around $5 compared to the $8 or $9 at other cafes. They can also order any books you'd like if they don't have them in stock. Great book selection though and such friendly staff who are happy to help! This place is way more than a bookstore and cafe though- they host community events, have book clubs, hold poetry nights and more! Absolutely love Morgenstern's. It has that familiarity of any bookstore and the clerks make it easy to find what you're looking for. All of the staff are super friendly. I don't think I can shop anywhere else in town and be approached with a smile EVERY time the way you can here. Today I tried the cafe for the first time and got a mango smoothie. This is a large bookstore with a cafe! It was very busy. They have a large kids area which was very nice. The staff were helpful and quick.

My favorite book store! Their kids section has a ton of really great books that you don't really see in big box stores. I could spend hours combing through them all. Lovely bookstore and cafe combo where you can get some work done or shop for a new book or some local goods! The bookstore was organized nicely into different genres and had a few little staff notes under certain books the staff loved. I saw many popular and/or new books available. The cafe area is to the left of the door when you want in and has a good assortment of coffee/tea/drinks to choose from. I had reached my caffeine limit for the day so I went with just a cookie. They had 4 different types of cookies, a few muffins, and what looked like an almond croissant to choose from. The salted caramel choc chip cookie was perfectly chewy with good sized pockets of caramel and little salt flakes on top. For just under $3 with tax, I thought the ~4in cookie was reasonable. Most of the tables in the cafe were taken up by students working individually on their laptops. If you need to get some work done, this seems like it would be a good spot if you can find an open seat. read more

I was so excited to see a bookstore + cafe combo! The cafe part was nice and suitable for working :) I got the CLOUD 9 drink (white chocolate mocha with hints of beetroot?) for Valentine's day and it was really good! Also very pretty. As we navigated to an outside road, we found Morgenstern's bookstore. The parking lot was filled with people checking out the new old bookstore. As we entered we found a help desk with a greeter who is present to answer questions. You will find other workstations throughout the store. You will find overstuffed chairs throughout the store. The refreshment area has a place to eat, drink and meet both inside and out. The baristas were helpful and friendly. You will find many books and other things for your delight. I was so excited to visit this new local bookstore with my bookstore obsessed husband and mother in law. We made it a day date and wished it was longer. We will definitely be back often. I suppose we're bibliophiles. My husband can't leave without buying an expensive cookbook, and I just appreciate the vibes. I like their selection of kombucha and teas in addition to coffee drinks. They do have some local hand pies, all vegan, and baked goods. I know they're going to be expanding to wine and beer soon for those that want a different nighttime vibe. Make sure to ask for the sauce to go with the hand pie. Overall, this is a great place to study, shop local, have a coffee date with friends or a new partner. The BEST part about this venue is the story behind it's opening. A local doctor's wife asked him what would make him the happiest during the pandemic and he replied, "opening a bookstore." Bloomington had been lacking a local bookstore for way too long. Morganstern's filled that hole in our heart. Come here on a rainy day and you won't be gloomy at all. You can tell the staff really love books as well as all things local. They always have different things showcased. There's also those little notes/reviews by a staff member's favorite book. I think those are such a fun little touch. The book collection is right up there with chain stores. And of course there is an adorable children's section. I recently bought a pack of national park postcards that will last me for a very long time, and I plan on doing lots of Christmas shopping here! Last year I bought my parents a rails trails book for Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. They love it! Coffee or tea is a must! They offer Cup & Kettle teas (another must visit), and many different syrup options for your latte. I have yet to try any food yet, but it's on my list. I love that they also offer many different book clubs for adults and story times for kids. And live music sometimes! read more
