Amazing. 3 of us went out with Captain John and we put on the boat 60#, 56#, 40# and a couple other small Halibut less than 28" and we were all back to the dock for lunch. HIKE 1: Saddle Trail to Glacier Lake Trail, packraft paddle across to Blue Ice Trail to a campsite on a bluff overlooking Grewingk Glacier: 6.06mi, 2hr 45min of moving time (overall took 8hr 5min), 849ft - Saddle Trail had the most elevation gain - Glacier Lake Trail was open and flat, probably the easiest and most pleasant - Blue Ice Trail was flat but a little more overgrown and full of mosquitos at the end of June. Camping in the area is a little hard; you're either surrounded by mosquitos or hit with a ton of wind that's been building off the glacier. We camped in a high rocky area and were able to find 7-8 tent spots; most of us had to build wind walls to protect our tents and use rocks to keep our stakes in place. We did encounter a black bear near our campsites and were glad to have bear spray handy. Grewingk Glacier ends on these very steep ice walls; we rafted up to them and estimated them to be about 50 ft. A couple people in our group watching some pieces calving! It happened a couple times in our one day in the area. HIKE 2: Later on we took the Blue Ice Trail back and went up the Emerald Lake Loop Trail to Emerald Lake. That 2.3 mile section has some extreme elevation gain and is extremely overgrown. It look us about an hour to just to half a mile. You're constantly crawling under and over trees, surrounded by mosquitos, and avoiding being stabbed by Devil's Club. 4.14mi, 2:20 moving time (overall took 4hr 22min), 1,159ft elevation (this must be the difference; we definitely climbed a good 2,000-3,000ft on the Emerald Lake Loop Trail). Emerald Lake was beautiful, has a nice little pebbly beach and was windy so there weren't mosquitos. We got a prop plane to fly us from Emerald Lake to the Wosnesenski Glacier, which has some easy flat camping in the area, with trees to block the wind. Be wary of low ground; we had to move 2 of our tents at midnight after just a little bit of rain because it was getting swampy where our tents were! There's some rock climbing nearby. The glacier ends gradually into the water with no dramatic ice walls like the Grewingk, but it is still a beautiful site, and the cliffs to the right of it have about 8 different waterfalls coming down. We packrafted down the Wosnesenski River; it was easy to moderate, but there was one section that wiped out four of us with a very strong eddy and a sharp corner. Be aware of shallow waters and trees in the river. We did see 4 eagles along the way!

We were paired with a larger group, so we also kayaked with Jackson and Erin who were super friendly and helpful. Between our water taxi ride to base camp and our paddle to Halibut Cove, all three guides helped us spot bald eagles, sea otters, osprey and even sea stars. They each had kayaking tips and interesting nature wisdom to share. Emma even took photos of our whole group and sent them to us afterward. Once we landed on the beach at Halibut Cove, Emma sat and ate with us, telling us all about the hike we were about to embark on. She was originally from our neck of the woods and it was so nice to connect about other kayaking adventures we had each tried. She was a an absolute gem and we would be thrilled to kayak with her again.

The kayak tour with Tom was equally amazing with a well planned trip to work with the tide to make the paddling easier and Tom himself who was a great guide with lots of knowledge. Bonus that we got close up with bald eagles, puffins, sea otters, seals, and a black bear. Topped off the kayak with a short hike. Our only regret was not staying longer. Highest recommendations for this outfit and the people running it!

All this while being surrounded by one of the most beautiful places on earth, with much of the beauty, nature, and wildlife explained to you by your intelligent and entertaining crew and skipper. We made a day of it, driving to Homer from Kenai, making our way through beautiful country, till the vista opens up and you see the breathtaking 180 degree view of the Kenai Mountains - jagged iron black mountains covered with snow and glaciers over the blue Kachemak Bay. A short drive through town and you end up on the Homer Spit, reaching far out into the Bay. With tours and artisan stores abounding, we opted for our reservation on the Danny J. The staff, many of whom are talented artists in their own right, were friendly, talented, and knowledgeable. In addition to skillful ocean navigation, one of the deck crew navigated around a full fledged two-year-old tantrum by carefully working her through wearing a life vest. The one hour ride across the bay to Halibut Cove included a full circle of Bird Rock, where Murres, Cormerants, Gulls, and even Puffins abound. We also saw sea otters playing. Hike and picnics in Halibut Cove if your budget is tight, or go ahead and eat at the Saltry - the food is fresh, home grown, home baked, with a big focus on sea food - but a bit spendy. Many artist studios and stores are within walking distance - all on the multi-level board walk - so enjoy and buy a few things. Get back on the boat at 4 pm for a quick half hour trip back to Homer (sans bird tour). This adventure as up there as one of our most memorable, most perfect travel days ever. I tried to book a couple of days at our usual spot in Homer this past weekend, to no avail. In fact…read moremost places were full. I prefer to have a full hookup site, as I have a CPAP machine, and plugging into electrical is preferable. I found 1 spot at Ocean Shore, and we'd never stayed there before so I wasn't sure what to expect. The price is thereabouts the same as where we normally stay, and with all the same sort of facilities, laundry, showers, bathrooms etc. on the map of available spots, there was only 1 remaining, and by my reckoning, it appeared to be in a somewhat desirable location within the park. By that I mean that there are some sites very close to the beach walk, and with a sea view directly out of the window, and not a view of the RV parked next to you. I had managed to score site 64, which had no other sites to one side of us - meaning we had a lovely sea view. Initially I thought there was something wrong, and that when we arrived, the camp host would tell me there'd been an error with the booking software. But such was not the case, we really did have an excellent site, with a perfect view, and very close to the beach walk. However if your objective is to be close to the showers, laundry, coffee shop etc, this is not the best one. I don't know how many times I've driven past this place on the main road in Homer. I really didn't know how nice it was. The camp host literally got in her car and drove us to our site, and she then marshalled my husband into the spot perfectly. And the sites are nicely leveled out too. The trash dumpster is very close to this site, as is the doggy doo bag station. Something I noticed at this place, is that all the occupants were very friendly. I don't see that too much in other places here. Our neighbours informed us that we were now blocking their lovely sea view (jokingly) and also, that someone must have canceled, for us to have gotten the "best spot" which I have to agree with. The internet here is superb. I'm not kidding, it's better than ours at home. Streaming media with no interruptions or buffering. This is the best internet I've ever experienced in any RV park. And it's free. Denali Rainbow Village gives you half an hour free, and then you have to pay, and it's more expensive up there than it is here, without the beautiful sea view., because you get an Alaska Resident discount down here. I was told also by our neighbours that it's usually difficult to get a spot here, because people book a year in advance. So I know what I have to do if I want to stay here next year. Really nice park with great facilities, helpful staff, and I hope to stay again
