I am concerned that she is preying on other veterans. The form I was asked to sign for care under a VA Community Care Network referral stated that medical insurance coverage is between me and my insurance company, that they are not "party" to that contract, that I would be responsible for balance if denied by my insurance, and that I would be responsible for the timely payment of my account. This may apply for certain health 'insurance' plans, but I can assure you this is not appropriate for veterans being referred in the community care network under the VA medical benefit. Ophthalmic Associates, TriWest is the company that manages the VA community care network here in Alaska, and there is no way that they would have been able to assign my referral to Ophthalmic Associates if there was no contract between you two. If your staff member who claimed to have 20+ years of billing and coding experience thinks that turning someone away from medical care for refusing to sign her illegal form is appropriate, then your medical providers should evaluate who they have on their payroll and the ethics which your group is operating under. If she is still employed there, I am grateful that your practice was not involved in my medical care. I desire integrity in my medical providers. Nothing on the TriWest website indicates that you have any right to bill a veteran in any way, shape, or form when they are receiving care under a community care referral/authorization. https://www.triwest.com/en/provider-handbook/billing-and-claims/#:~:text=Payments%20made%20by%20TriWest%20or,a%20Veteran's%20episode%20of%20care

They they not really interacted with me. They just said, open your eyes. Be still. I was informed by them five years ago they were the only ones in the state that does the surgery. So I had to do it with them. They charged me $1880 for their facility fee. On top of my copay. My insurance won't pay their facility fee. This fall I had secondary cataracts that had to be removed Again they told me the same thing and recharging me the same price I called around, talk to my insurance and found a minimum of 10 other doctors in this town that will do that surgery and charge my insurance without me having to pay a huge facility fee... I don't think it's fair, especially to the elderly who are living on Medicare. The people the front desk were very nice.

I came to Anchorage in 1979. I went to Alaska Eye Care Center when they first opened. Back then…read morethey were the chic place to go, now, all the original founding doctors are gone, replaced by money hungry grubbers. Gone are the carpeted floors and quiet, spacious exam rooms where the doctors took time to LISTEN to you took the time to answer questions and just plain worked with you. The assistants were all polite and all the assistant pre-doc exam rooms were dark, quiet and private. Now it's a Walmart conveyor belt shakedown business. A bunch of women who, being foreigners, tell you what to do, and when you attempt to explain something, they look at you with glazed eyes, giggle, and ignore you to get the pre-exam done as quickly as possible. The doctors' exam room are small, harsh cubicles with no warmth at all, the doctor who dealt with me machine-gunning questions getting the exam done in as short time as he could, his schedule marked out in 30-minute blocks. The sales associates want to rush you through to buy something, and when you think about making a decision they huff openly being impatient. The one assigned to me was openly rude. I got my prescription and left. Sadly, Alaska Eyecare Centers have fallen far indeed since Dr. Diane Thanephon and they others where there. Sad.

They genuinely care, they go above and beyond to make sure you leave happy, and if you're a dog lover, you'll adore their sweet shop pup, Juniper. You won't regret visiting! Now for the backstory: This morning, my glasses broke in half on one side. With my horrendous eyesight, I literally cannot function without glasses. I'm visiting from out of state and, of course, I forgot to pack my backup pair. Total nightmare. I almost went to LensCrafters since I know they do repairs, but I decided last-minute to support local and try Ursa because of their great reviews. BEST. DECISION. EVER. The moment I walked in, I was greeted by Juniper, their adorable four-legged mascot, and instantly felt at ease. Nancy, Julie, and Jamie were all incredibly kind, patient, and welcoming. They somehow managed to find a pair of donated designer frames that perfectly fit my existing lenses. Julie even said it's almost unheard of for that to happen--but lucky me, it did! The new frames were gorgeous (and easily three times more expensive than the online pair I had before), and I walked out not just with "fixed" glasses but with a major upgrade. The customer service was absolutely phenomenal, Juniper stole my heart, and the cherry on top was leaving with a beautiful pair of frames that I never would've expected to get that day--especially for free. I've been wearing glasses for over 20 years and have been to countless optical shops, but Ursa blows them all out of the water. They turned what could have been a catastrophic situation into a positive, even memorable experience. My biggest lesson: never travel without a backup pair--but if you do and you're anywhere near Ursa, you'll be in the best hands possible. Thank you, Ursa, Nancy, Julie, Jamie, and of course, Juniper!
