We had a fabulous stay at this campground. Three nights total, you do need to look around to find a site that has a bear box and reasonable shade but when we arrived there were several to choose from. There campground store was the best I have ever seen in any park. Lots of selection and prices were very reasonable. Their staff is always friendly. All you can eat pancake breakfast available for $12. Definitely check out Knife Edge Trail (great cell reception) Mesa Verde Point Lookout Trail

We had a very nice experience at Morefield campground, with some caveats. The campground is very big, with over 300 campsites, so be prepared for some crowded restrooms and shower facilities. Not a bad thing, if you prepare and are patient. Having read some of the previous reviews after our recent stay (6/5/17-6/9/17) I can say there have been improvements in service and maintenance. As others have mentioned, the promised wifi is non-existent, but in my opinion if wifi is at the top of your camping priorities, please adjust your priorities. We stayed in site 66, which had beautiful views of a far away mountain saddle, and made for excellent sunset viewing. The site was level for our tent, but very small in size. It backed up to the well trimmed juniper trees, but with the included metal table, was very tight for two camp chairs, a camp chef stove, and two people. Having experienced Watchman campground in Zion at full summer capacity, this was a much calmer and quieter experience. The quiet time was observed, which we appreciated. My wife experienced lines at the ladies restroom several times, and sink time was a premium. Maybe upgrading the restrooms to handle the amount of campers should be considered for the future? We found the staff to be friendly and accommodating. The free showers were nice, clean, and the water was hot and constant. We have paid for 6 minute showers at other campgrounds and found this free service to be a real treat, especially coming from drought stricken California. The prices for ice and sundries at the store were high to a park concessionaire expectation, no shock there for us. If you forget to pack it and don't want to drive to Cortez (15 minutes to City Market) you will pay through the nose. Don't complain the prices because it is in stock and close by. Also, camp bear aware here. We saw no bears, but received an $80 ticket for leaving our two plastic food storage containers out during the day. Clearly it is stated in the Park rules and printed right on the picnic table, so our mistake. We felt as first offenders that a warning would have been sufficient, but they are taking this very seriously here and the polite but firm Rangers did their job well. Lesson learned. The Park was maintained better from what we saw, as we witnessed Park staff weed trimming sites and hiking paths. We saw several deer walking through the campground, heard a turkey, and also the twilight yips of coyotes. Very nice. Bring insect repellent too, as the mosquitoes come out as soon as the sun dips in the sky. But your firewood at the aforementioned City Market for $5.99 a bundle and save on the $9 a bundle charged at the store. Again, preparation. In summation, and the reason for 4 stars versus 5, was the campsite size. For the price it should be bigger, and would have never accommodated a family of four. Trimming the trees back would accomplish this easily. We will return as we enjoyed our time at this campground.

Ancient Cedars RV park probably falls into the second category, although it offers amenities and features that are superior to lots of other RV parks, KOAs, and the like. For one thing, just about every site has a beautiful view of Mesa Verde National Park's celebrated geography... as a matter of fact, you really can't get much closer to the park without camping inside of it. One minute drive from Ancient Cedars and you're in the park! Despite being pretty close to our neighbors, our site had full hook ups, shade from a well-placed tree, a picnic table, and enough room to set up our trailer and park our truck. Easy pull through sites for all sized trailers and campers. Larger sites for humongous rolling houses and such did not have trees, but those would just get in your way, right? The front desk staff was extremely kind and friendly, the price was not astronomical, and we were not packed in like sardines, as we have been at a few other private RV park locations. The swimming pool, hot tub, and 18 hole miniature golf course were all enjoyed by the kids, as well as the game room with foosball, a billiards table, and a few other things. The front office area has a small mini mart for those essentials you forgot, and code entry restrooms and showers. The park is next to a horse property, and at night, the friendly horses come over to the fence to the delight of kids and grown ups alike. I also thought it was thoughtful that one of the rules is all external lights on campers need to be turned off at night, so visitors can enjoy the dark sky and view of the stars. At least, when the monsoon clouds aren't blocking the view. Overall, this was a great last stop on our month-long cross country road trip. Worth checking out, and hope to visit again.
