This library earns more than one star simply for being a clean, public space that offers some free services. However, most, if not all, of their children's programs cater solely to stay-at-home Moms, which I am not. This includes the summer reading program, which (as residents) we tried last year. The program requires oral reports on all books read to receive credit, but rarely had anyone available in the evenings to listen to kids. Multiple times, I was told to "come back during the day," which is nearly impossible if you work outside the home. When we finally were able to receive attention from a listener, she refused to hear more than 3 books per day. The rule is enforced so that one kid doesn't monopolize the listener's attention. While that makes sense, it is, IMHO, unnecessary to enforce when no other children are waiting. Instead, the staff felt it was more fair to just not have listeners available in the evenings, and to keep telling us to come back another time. They also refused to accept my word that the books were read, and told my daughter some of the books she read were "below" her reading level, which they were not. (A parent knows more about a child's reading level than a library staffer who doesn't even know her name.) So, with less than a week left in the program, my kid had no chance of officially receiving credit for reaching her goals and, therefore, was unable to reap the program rewards. After all her hard work, pride in her achievements and enthusiasm about participating, she was crushed in a way that went beyond disappointment. Throwing salt in the wound, the staff was unnecessarily unkind about it too. IMHO, this is not the way to encourage lifelong readers. On another occasion, my child was denied the opportunity to renew a book with one chapter left. She was told that her name was being put on a waiting list to get it back, but the staff never followed through with doing so. I have also patronized the library on multiple occasions to borrow books and utilize the computer/printer. No matter who I speak with first and which counter I approach first, I am ALWAYS directed to go elsewhere. There appears to be no consistency in how check-outs and other services are handled, which is frustrating. read more
