Vail Health is a wonderful hospital in which to have a procedure--perfectly organized and timely. I am a trail runner, hiker and rancher so I ride horseback many hours a week in the summer months. EKG (same as above) 4. Blood work (no quest in mountains) 5. Etc. I have never had all the crap dumped on my lap to have a procedure done. Guess with a 3.5 rating Steadman is not what they used to be. Will buck up and drive 3 days to Florida and find a practice that cares.

So I give Noel a low rating for: guiding me towards the apparent wrong type of repair for my arthritic big toe (implant over fusion) while assuring me that his surgical plans were built on industry Gold Standards; for selecting a piece of surgical hardware that was rated for low activity only, and then installing that hardware in my active body in a manner that seems unpopular to those in the global podiatrist community; for receiving two different types of staph infections after office visits; for having to transfer care to Denver surgeons while things snowballed through three more salvage-attempt surgeries until amputation; for his lack of accountability, restitution, or admission of any wrongdoing; and for leaving me to fight my new long-list of health problems related to my experiences under his care.

I have a recording of a consultation with a Doctor at Panorama Orthopedics where he tells my wife…read moreas plainly as he can (with 3 interns in the room) that nothing, absolutely nothing, could be done for my Wife's shoulders short of complete replacement. We sought a second opinion from Dr. Dorf. Now, Dr. Dorf is a straightforward guy - about as straightforward as they come - but he is also a professional and he didn't bash the previous doctor, but the look of complete puzzlement by this previous diagnosis was difficult for him to hide. He felt he could give immediate relief with a cortisone shot - which he administered himself. The previous doctor told us that even with his 35 years of experience he couldn't get a shot in the right place without ultrasound guidance. Dr. Dorf didn't have this issue. He was confident he could get it in the right place - and he did. Again, the puzzlement was difficult to hide - but no bashing. ;-) After reviewing the MRI provided by Panorama (the same MRI the previous doctor used for his diagnosis) he gave us the opinion that he could scope her shoulders and give her years of less pain and he did not feel that replacement was something that should even be on our radar. She had bone spurs, partially torn rotator cuffs, arthritis, scar tissue. Dr. Dorf "clobbered" the spurs, fixed the cuffs, took out the biceps tendon and cleaned up the rest. Why couldn't the other doctor do that? Perhaps skill has something to do with it. What a difference. Our original diagnosis was disturbing to say the least, but i guess when all you have is a nail, the answer is always a hammer. Dr. Dorf is on a whole different level. To put it bluntly, this guy knows his shit and isn't afraid to do the right thing for his patient - even if that requires some stern advice on recovery from time to time. Additionally his support staff is awesome. Annie in particular was so great. She called us promptly every time we had questions and didn't mess around when it came to making sure my wife was taken care of in the best way possible. My wife also had trapeziectomy on both of her thumbs. the result is 2 thumbs, way up! If you go to Dr. Dorf prepare yourself for great care, great advice and counseling, and most of all - great confidence that the right thing is being done by the right people. Hopefully Dr. Dorf lives forever because we plan to, and we will never use another orthopedic doctor. Thanks Doc. :-)

A nice enough and attentive enough physician and I got the care I needed. I just didn't realize…read morethat in addition to a few specific and separate charges that I would be billed at a rate of close $600 per hour. I don't know if anyone else is more straightforward about this? If anyone gives any options? Seems like we shouldn't be placed in a situation where we are choosing between one office visit to get treated in sickness or putting food on the table the rest of the month or paying our mortgage in full or (ironically, paying our health insurance premium). I have learned from this that no matter how sick or how friendly the physician is, I need to get the financial disclosure in advance. Hopefully this doesn't lead to deferring treatment and ending up in the ER.
