This bike dealer is absolutely horrendous. I've spent over a year with one of their higher end e-bikes (Super 73) and am completely disappointed. Although it still moves, it does not even get close to the max speed it indicates through the stock-product. The motor dulls down over a small amount of time and I am not impressed. The last and most important flaw of these bikes are their tires. Why sell these cheaply made fat-tires on higher end frames in Santa Cruz, which is well known for its inconsistent roadwork and sloppy construction workers leaving screws everywhere? Like come on, at least accommodate for people like me who've gotten a flat on the rear wheel over TEN times in under a year. Please do better and sell products made for the environment they're being sold in. read more

Jim may be a great mechanic as some say, I don't know. But he made such a poor judgement call that I can't give him more than one star. I would give him zero stars if I could. I had an old motor that I used to run my rustic homemade houseboat for years. It was part of the rustic charm. A 1978 Mercury "200" 20hp. When we had purchased the motor years ago, it was in terrible shape, and we rebuilt it redoing all the electrical. It was beautiful and reliable and started on a dime, despite its years. We love it. We named it Freddie Mercury. Unfortunately, the gearbox went out when we were on the Tennessee River and when I got home I took it over to Moore & Sons. He said, I'll call you in a few days. No call. I called and left a message, no call back. I waited a week, called and left a message. No call back. Finally a month later, I called and finally reached him. He said the lower gearbox was shot (as expected) and, after talking a bit, he said he would look at one more place the next day to see if they had a lower end that matched this motor and if not, I would come and get it. No call back. I called and left a message a week later. No call back. I waited almost a month again. Left a message. Still no call. I called this morning to an unexpected surprise. I caught him at the shop. Unbelievably he told me he'd junked our engine. Junked it. He said the gearbox was gone and it was trash. I reminded him about our previous conversation. The top end was still perfect. WTF? He claimed that he had called me a bunch of times, but I never received a call or voicemail (I just double checked my phone records). I think he recognized that he made a big mistake and offered to find me another motor. He said "I'll make things right." Of course, I don't want *another* motor, I want mine. Or failing that, the $700 to $900 it was worth. So we'll see what happens. EDIT: After a month, he still did not provide another motor or offer to pay, so I was forced to take him to small claims court. EDIT: He didn't appear in small claims and so there was a judgement against him. Still he refused to pay. Nearly two months later, I'm still trying to collect. Spent over $2k on Mercury motor maintenance. Motor has not run properly since boat was returned. Dies when accelerating. Promised to look at it in slip. Never did. Have left 9 follow up messages asking for return call --- over 2 months. No call back. Update---motor still not running properly 7 months later. Been patient and nice. Jim seems like a nice guy. Has tons of business, maybe too much. Offered to get boat out of water and bring to shop. Told not to do. Maybe if you act like a real pain in the ass, you'll get attention, but life's too short. One shouldn't have to do that to have things made right. Disappointing. read more

Jim Moore is a great guy and will go above and beyond the usual range of good service to help you. No one knows merc like his shop and they can fix any of them, even the oldest. He kept my 25yr old outboard for a few weeks to find parts and straight-up gave me a new engine as a "loaner" so we would have a good vacation w/ a dependable boat. Excellent work done by Jim and Jake at Moore and Sons!!! Fixed our faulty spark plug wires and found that the motor was only firing on 2 cylinders not 3. They also gave us a new prop to test out. So glad that we found them. The rates are reasonable too!! read more

I called asking a question about a spark plug wire and I said when I first told him that I owned a Johnson motor not a mercury and I was struggling to find a spark plug wire for my outboard. I guess there was a misunderstanding on the phone and he thought that I said it was a mercury but what I actually said was I know that you guys are a mercury shop but my motor is a Johnson and I wanted to see if you guys had or knew of where I could get spark plugs for them. He was extremely rude once he realized that my outboard was not a mercury and before I could ask him if he had any other places he could recommend in town other than Monterey Bay and West Marine he hung up the phone as I was mid sentence. We doesn't know is I also own a mercury outboard and was going to ask for their next available appointment for a service. They've lost me as a future customer which is a bummer because I am a huge believer in supporting local business being born and raised in top of being a commercial fisherman who owns his own boat. read more

I have had a few dealing with Jim at Moore and Son Outboard Motors and I would state that Jim is solid and trustworthy. I had an aging outboard that had very poor performance and was quite difficult to troubleshoot. The service became extensive as multiple components were faulty and one issue lead to the next issue. Jim has an extremely knowable Mercury shop and the team is quite competent. I feel Jim is very fair, honest and trustworthy and I would give him my business again. Moore and Son Outboard does have some weaknesses, which includes timely communication/responsiveness and speed of service. If you are looking for a quick turnaround time on a service, I would communicate that expectation upfront and in person. I will be returning to give Moore and Son my business again. read more

I will have to modify my earlier review. I had an opportunity to actually see my motor while in Santa Cruz 8/5. Monterrey Bay Marine showed me the motor and major components of the carburetor were missing. These guys (Moore) aren't just incompetent they are THIEVES. They canabalized my motor. Now I have to buy a replacement motor. Can't understand how these guys stay in business. read more
