Both floors of MG feature some of the best art that Canada has to offer. The gallery is well laid out, pieces are well curated and there is a specific room dedicated solely to the thirty year history of the gallery featuring a 150 year span of the best pieces of MG's past. Well lit and spacious, a Fafard colt sculpture is in plain view in the far corner of one of the rooms. Amazing! Joe Fafard is a world renowned Saskatchewan artist who recently showed at the Glenbow Museum just last year and now a lucky Calgarian can actually purchase one of his pieces here. MG is one of the oldest galleries in the city and is unique in that it carries both historical and modern pieces. Their mandate is making gallery visiting fun, they encourage you to simply come in and look around. One of the nicest perks about MG is once you are set on a piece, MG will let you take it home for a trial run, and once you have purchased a piece and have outgrown it you are welcome to take it back to MG and trade it for another one. For this reason MG has a steady cliental base here in Calgary because they ensure that your art purchases coincide with the money that you have available and the pieces that are purchased are of value.

It's a beautiful place that easily accommodates both large & small scale artwork. It also regularly features pieces of various mediums including sculpture, painting, photography, interactive exhibits, film & any combination of the above. I've yet to see a live performance piece there, though they do seem to have the capacity for it. The Esker also features talks by artists, family art events & kid focused hands on art lessons! You'll have to register via their site but they are entirely free! It's also FREE for regular visits! As an extra bonus, they have nice longer hours, especially on Thursdays & Fridays, when they're open till 8pm. The place is clean & modern. There's some beautiful architectural elements to the interior without imposing on the features works. There's also a nice sitting area with a fantastic view of downtown if you just want a nice break. The only negative about the space is that the main revolving door is a little too seamless! Meaning: the actual openings to come in and out look way too similar to the glass panels! If you're not touching the glass walls or you're not paying attention (eg: you're talking to a friend or your phone just rang, etc) you can actually miss the opening & have to do the turn again! It's embarrassing, believe me! :( Other than the main door this is one amazing space! I love this place very much, please check it out sometime, or catch one of their talks. Those can get a bit crowded even with registration, so go early! Have fun & fill up on some amazing works of art!

I hit…read morethat milestone a couple of years ago when I bought a piece from one of the artists at GFA. I probably stop into this gallery 3 or 4 times a year to drool over art that I would like to buy, but can't seem to justify buying when I have so many other exciting things to spend money on, like snow tires or property tax. Or that cream that's supposed to get rid of those dark circles under your eyes. Even though I'm not able to purchase as often as I would like, every visit to the gallery is enjoyable. The staff are knowledgable and friendly. Artist shows that I have attended are always a good time, usually filled with interesting people, nibblies and wine, and again, the great staff. I'm on GFA's mailing list and receive emails from them notifying me of new artwork or events at the gallery and unlike other commercial emails that are sent too frequently or don't provide valuable info, GFA has achieved that perfect balance of keeping me informed without annoying the crap out of me. I will definitely be buying from this artist again, but I also like the style of many of the other artists that GFA represents. Yes, art is subjective and what I like may not be your thing. However, good customer service and friendly staff are critical to any business, and GFA gets it. 5/30

The lady working the Nuit Blanche shift was kind enough and very informative, but the exhibit and set-up left me ambivalent. Lots of potential, but all I felt was posturing and pretense. Also, the ominous music could be heard in the bathroom next door, and made washing my hands a Silent Hill experience. The gallery genuinely appreciates and supports art and artists, including and maybe especially art students. I love the way they transform the gallery for each show, often featuring mixed media exhibitions and on creating a real experience. To walk in is to be immersed in the gallery. When I'm in Eau Claire Mall, I often see people peering in through the glass, and then deciding not to go in. The art can be kind of avant-garde, so I think there is this misapprehension that you should only go in if you can appreciate it. But the thing is, they love art so much that they want to share it. They are so happy when people come in, and answer questions with passion and without pretension. They are actually very inclusive, and love to talk about and help people understand the exhibitions. So the next time you walk by the New Gallery in Eau Claire Market, go in and say hi, and enjoy some great art.

The style and work was incredible, but the prices were outrageous... More than that however I did not personally connect with any of his pieces. I knew that I wanted this style artwork and I also wanted a piece that represented San Diego to me. While searching google for hours, I stumbled upon Alex's ebay page. I found an incredible piece taken on the shores of San Diego that really spoke to me. While the price was reasonable compared to PL's, it was still expensive relatively speaking and since the gallery is in Canada and I'm in the US, it made me very nervous to make this transaction. I looked to yelp and saw very few reviews, so I reached out to Alex directly. He was VERY responsive and sent me mock ups of how the piece would look on the wall. I also gave him measurements of the space and he customized the dimensions of the piece. I felt much more comfortable at that point and decided to order. Much to my surprise, the piece made it to Illinois 4 days after ordering! It came in a custom crate and was packed impeccably. I could not be more pleased! This piece is the centerpiece of our home.
