Both floors of MG feature some of the best art that Canada has to offer. The gallery is well laid out, pieces are well curated and there is a specific room dedicated solely to the thirty year history of the gallery featuring a 150 year span of the best pieces of MG's past. Well lit and spacious, a Fafard colt sculpture is in plain view in the far corner of one of the rooms. Amazing! Joe Fafard is a world renowned Saskatchewan artist who recently showed at the Glenbow Museum just last year and now a lucky Calgarian can actually purchase one of his pieces here. MG is one of the oldest galleries in the city and is unique in that it carries both historical and modern pieces. Their mandate is making gallery visiting fun, they encourage you to simply come in and look around. One of the nicest perks about MG is once you are set on a piece, MG will let you take it home for a trial run, and once you have purchased a piece and have outgrown it you are welcome to take it back to MG and trade it for another one. For this reason MG has a steady cliental base here in Calgary because they ensure that your art purchases coincide with the money that you have available and the pieces that are purchased are of value.

It was a well organised event, complete with cookies, art work, photos in traditional cultural gear and entertainment. I had a chance to peruse the gallery; and this is a very large space complete with two floors. The gallery is kind of separated as well in sections so it is like you are entering rooms. Most of the artwork there seems regal and are realistic impressions, there are many works in oil and there are many larger sculptures and prints as well. In the far back is the area for custom framing, there are many frames to choose from and there is a large work table so I am assuming that they encourage you to work alongside the framer since it is open to the public. The area that I found most interesting however was the artwork from our Northern Arctic area. There is a great representation here on Inuit art, print work and stone sculpture. The most impressive thing about this lay out for me is that they actually have photos of the artists hanging alongside some of the work and a bit of biography about them. A lot of these pieces are from the Cape Dorset area and I found the Webster prices to be fair prices for these pieces. Kudos goes out to Webster for helping out the community scene and for having one of the few Inuit art collections in the city.

You know you're an adult when your artwork comes from places that don't also sell meatballs. I hit…read morethat milestone a couple of years ago when I bought a piece from one of the artists at GFA. I probably stop into this gallery 3 or 4 times a year to drool over art that I would like to buy, but can't seem to justify buying when I have so many other exciting things to spend money on, like snow tires or property tax. Or that cream that's supposed to get rid of those dark circles under your eyes. Even though I'm not able to purchase as often as I would like, every visit to the gallery is enjoyable. The staff are knowledgable and friendly. Artist shows that I have attended are always a good time, usually filled with interesting people, nibblies and wine, and again, the great staff. I'm on GFA's mailing list and receive emails from them notifying me of new artwork or events at the gallery and unlike other commercial emails that are sent too frequently or don't provide valuable info, GFA has achieved that perfect balance of keeping me informed without annoying the crap out of me. I will definitely be buying from this artist again, but I also like the style of many of the other artists that GFA represents. Yes, art is subjective and what I like may not be your thing. However, good customer service and friendly staff are critical to any business, and GFA gets it. 5/30

It's quite out of town so when going you have to incorporate that into you time and make it a full day. We arrived and automatically went into the cabin where we would be doing our art. Our tour guide was Emma and she gave each of the students a notebook to keep and take home which they loved. She asked them to look around the room but they had to stay seated and draw an object or thing they could see from their seats. Then after they did it once they had to flip to the next page and find another object in the room and draw it and she gave them a time limit the first time of 5 minutes and only 3 minutes the second time to show how it gets harder. Some students were asking for erasers and she explained that they don't have erasers because they believe that artists don't make mistakes. Then they students started their clay projects making a landscape and they had lots of fun doing this. Then we had lunch in that same room after students cleaned up and then they had play time outside in the snow which the leader explained the boundaries they had to stay in and that all nature things including snow stay on the ground. Then we did a nature walk and then the students got to go through the Leighton house which they really enjoyed especially the room with the parrot and all the trees! Thank you Leighton Art Centre !

It's a short drive south of Calgary. I used google maps to get me to the Leighton Art Centre. The drive there is beautiful. Lush rolling green hills and beautiful forests. I swear I was transported to an English countryside! If you like scenery, a summer drive in this area is highly recommended. Our art lesson was held in an original little school house, now an historical landmark, built in the 1950s. After our art lesson (which I determined I do not have a talent for lol) our instructor led us on a short nature walk up to the the Leighton House Museum. A beautiful home originally designed by Alfred Crocker Leighton that features much of the home's original furniture and the Leighton's personal belongings. The home also showcases AC Leighton's original artwork as well is now home to many local artists' work where they are displayed and for sale. The house is beautifully situated over looking a breathtaking view. The Leightons were dedicated to art and the art community, and I can see why artists come there to paint, there is so much inspiration all around you. Definitely worth the drive out there for the views alone, but the museum and learning a little bit of local history is a nice bonus too.

The style and work was incredible, but the prices were outrageous... More than that however I did not personally connect with any of his pieces. I knew that I wanted this style artwork and I also wanted a piece that represented San Diego to me. While searching google for hours, I stumbled upon Alex's ebay page. I found an incredible piece taken on the shores of San Diego that really spoke to me. While the price was reasonable compared to PL's, it was still expensive relatively speaking and since the gallery is in Canada and I'm in the US, it made me very nervous to make this transaction. I looked to yelp and saw very few reviews, so I reached out to Alex directly. He was VERY responsive and sent me mock ups of how the piece would look on the wall. I also gave him measurements of the space and he customized the dimensions of the piece. I felt much more comfortable at that point and decided to order. Much to my surprise, the piece made it to Illinois 4 days after ordering! It came in a custom crate and was packed impeccably. I could not be more pleased! This piece is the centerpiece of our home.
