There happened to be loads of free bread on site today so she was able to take as much as she needed. Coffee and snacks were available. Being that it's Christmas time, she was able to provide I.D. for herself and her children who will now receive a wrapped gift based on their choices out of donated items. That in itself put such a big smile on this woman's face that I almost cried. She also received a referral to the Women In Need Society resulting in a $100 voucher toward whatever she requires from there once it is officially approved. She can also call the Centre anytime for a food bank referral. I was totally beside myself as I watched all of this happen. We are so lucky to live in a country that can provide this kind of support. The Centre also offers many courses, some professional services and socialization opportunities. Their bulletin boards are full of great information regarding community resources and upcoming events. I walked out with a stack of brochures. There is a small area with a handful of computers with internet access as well as a fax and photocopy machine which can be accessed anytime. The Centre's appearance is very eclectic and it was also very hectic with volunteers tending to phone calls, walk-ins as well as women and children on-site using the Centre as needed. You can tell that the desks and other furnishings are well used and likely donated. Apparently the Centre may be relocated to another building in the neighborhood and if so, I hope they receive donations in order to upgrade these things, as it is much deserved. Honestly, if any woman is in need of resources and quick results, this is probably one of the best places in Calgary to go.

I was warned that I probably have never washed my hands that many times in one morning before. They weren't kidding. Mimi runs a strict kitchen. Don't touch anything. If you do, wash your hands. Before you switch from one station to another, wash your hands. If you touch the bottom of the bread bag with your gloved hand instead of just holding onto the top bit of the bag, take the gloves off, throw them away and... wash your hands. I could go on... but I think you get the picture. This is one clean kitchen. It's also a really smooth operation. They've been doing this a looooong time and have their systems down to an efficient science. Different stations, different duties, different teams... in one day I hopped from sandwich making duty to carrot cutting (the carrot slicing press thing is pretty fun, I'll admit) to sandwich bag sealing. There was certainly never a shortage of things to help out with :). If you're looking for a spot to volunteer with some friends (or your coworkers!) book yourself in for a morning here. You'll be helping to prep lunches for kids that really need them in the city, and having a fun morning in the process! But get in touch with them now... they're already booking volunteer spaces into March. Yelp's 30 Day Challenge: 10/30

This group's mandate is to utilize youth members to volunteer for local events in the city of Calgary and within it's community. A simple application has to be filled out with the dates and requirements of the event and project and YVC will send out a minimum of 6 volunteers to come and support you with your event. The coordinator that I dealt with when seeking the volunteers was both organised and extremely amenable in answering any questions I had about the program. The event was successful and ran extremely smooth and this is all because of the dedicated hard work of these fine youth volunteers. What a huge and ever so useful program that should be recognised publicly as much as possible.

Every first Thursday of the month is free admission sponsored by Servus. I had to take advantage of this offer. Regular price admission is $18 per person. Why pay when you can go in for free. Plus I am not a tourist so might as well visit on a Thursday. All exhibits/galleries are open on the free admission day. The museum is very specifically tailored to the First Nation history and history of Calgary. They do have an interesting section on geology: rocks, minerals, stones, geode and etc. That gallery was slightly out of place compared to the rest of the museum/items on display. The first floor is really the gift shop and museum ticket/concierge/info center. Second floor is the first nation artworks. There are paintings and a few pieces of artwork. Third floor is about the oil and gas industry. As well, as the first settlement and the history of Calgary. Fourth floor is more tailored to the British Army and a section on the history of Africa. Everything is well documented, comprehensive and well referenced in the museum. Expect to spend about 2 hours minimum here. Overall, I enjoyed my stay. I don't think this museum changes much and so it is really one time visit. Note that no big backpacks are allowed into the museum and would be required to be checked in.
