I am so fortunate we got to dine here before they close down. Iconic spot located right on PCH and the beach. The views of breathtaking, service was seamless. They have a great variety of menu items, healthy, light, and delicious, which fits the vibe here. Food was ready quickly, even when they are busy. Nice option for kids and families as well, also ideal for a date night. This was one of our favorite places in Malibu, such a shame that it is no longer.

The stars are for the view which is of course wonderful as this restaurant sits right on the edge overlooking the beach and the ocean. Be aware that as it gets later in the day, the sun sets and there is no amount of possible shade if you're close to the ocean. The food is really poor. Very mediocre. Meh. We had the lobster roll, it's unseasoned, heavy on the bread which does not taste fresh. The shrimp pasta is bland and taste-free. The bread that arrives at your table for free is maybe the best thing of the entire order. Parking is easy because there's valet. Overall, would we come here again? No. Because as lovely as the view is, there are other restaurants along PCH with equally as good a view and better food.

This was my 2nd time eating at Moonshadows and again, it did not disappoint! We made a reservation; but needed to move up the time after coming from the Malibu Hike and they were able to accommodate us with ease. Upon arrival we were set right away. We were a party of party of 5 and had a beautiful view of the ocean. We ordered a variety of plates from the sea bass to the filet. Everyone was happy with their meal, except my friend that ordered the filet. It did look a bit dry; but again...this is a seafood spot, not a steakhouse. Depending on your seating location, the sun may be in your face; but if you're solar-powered like myself...it's perfect. Parking is Valet ONLY, so prepare for that! There is no lot and PCH is nuts so drive cautiously. I would definitely return

My first time at Moonshadows! I've been wanting to try this place for so long and glad I finally got the chance to. The view was beautiful and we got to see a couple of dolphins swimming around as well. Such a cute restaurant and there's so seats near the bar where you are basically over the water but those are first come first serve. Our server was Leigh and she was amazing! One of the best servers I've ever had, she was so attentive and funny and sweet and always right on top of everything. The bussers, food runners, the manager and hosts were also wonderful and friendly and we just had a pleasant experience for our friend's birthday. For appetizers we ordered the tuna tartare, calamari, oysters and clam chowder. And they also give you complimentary bread. Everything was delicious but I have to say the calamari was my fave out of the appetizers. For the entrees my friends had the boullabaisse, the pork chops and I had the pumpkin tortellini which I added the shrimp to. Our other friend had the crab and lobster linguini but I didn't get a picture of that by accident. Everyone seemed to really like their meals! The pumpkin tortellini was definitely something unexpected and I really enjoyed it as well. We brought a cake for her birthday and were already splitting at the seams lol so we didnt order dessert (although my friend raves about the creme brûlée). by the way there is a $20 cake fee which we didn't mind paying bc everyone was so amazing but they also did cut slices for all of us and served it to us on their nice plates. You could try to find parking but it might take you a bit on the stretch of pch since it's limited so I would just valet if I were you (the valet only does cash btw) But thank you so much moonshadows for your hospitality and wonderful experience, my friend had a great birthday!

All smiles. Lobster is on its way.

Couldn't have chosen a better place for Father's Day brunch this year. From Moonshadows carefully crafted cocktails (and mocktails) to the clean presentation and flavors of our pre fixe selected appetizers, entrees and desserts, this experience was an absolute hit for the whole family. First course consisted of halibut ceviche, grilled gulf shrimp skewers, corn and lobster bisque and a classic Cesar salad. All quite yummy although the standouts were the grilled shrimp with mango pineapple salsa and the Halibut ceviche. Both were exquisite! Succulence of the sweet shrimp and bright fresh flavors of the salsa were the best combination. Corn lobster soup was good but not great. Salt was missing as well as any depth of flavor. Also the soup base was a tad watery in texture and taste. I guess I was expecting more of lobster bisque and this it was not. Entrees were Maine lobster, grilled C.A.B. Ribeye steak, Chilean sea bass and the Rosemary infused Australian rack of lamb. I ordered the sea bass and it was one of the best I've had. Perfectly cooked and seasoned without exception. I think I slightly moaned after each bite. Lol Anyway, highly recommend this dish here. I subbed mashed potatoes for the black forbidden rice but later had a bit of buyers remorse. I think I would've enjoyed the rice more. Moving onto dessert was equally impressive and just as satisfying as the previous two courses. We decided on one if each. The cheesecake, panna cotta, tiramisu and the chocolate soufflé cake. All delicious but the two favorites were the cheesecake and panna cotta. The patio seating was everything! Views galore. I requested this on my reservation and while it wasn't guaranteed, I was so happy it was fulfilled. I gave this restaurant/review a 5-star (instead of 4-star) because of the manager's delightful demeanor and attentiveness. He himself bumped up this rating! Although he wasn't our server he checked on our table, took orders on another round of drinks and even removed a misplaced charge on our bill from the server. While the restaurant was busy, it wasn't above receiving excellent service which thankfully the manager ensured we received. I would definitely recommend and revisit Moonshadows again!

Food was ok. I ordered their cod and I was too Impressed. It feel like coming here you are paying for the view which is beautiful to say the least. I orders a Lychee Martini which was very good. The service was great, but other than that I can't see myself going back anytime soon.

A colleague recommended Moonshadows in Malibu to me while I was out in LA for a work trip. So glad I made a reservation. The location of the property is right on the water. Would have been an amazing sunset, but we loved seeing the moon shining onto the water. The cocktails were delicious. I have a cucumber vodka and tried the watermelon vodka drink. Both delicious. For an appetizer we had the calamari. Fried to perfection with delicious sauces. I had the beet and goat cheese salad with a side of mashed potatoes. Another member of our party ordered the swordfish and there was a special of lobster ravioli. All were fantastic. Our server was very attentive. He was also knowledgeable about any items on the menu etc. highly recommend, if even just for the location! Another thing to note, keep in mind the 12$ valet parking (cash only).

Leo H.

The best views and service by far the only bad thing I can say about this place is my steak lack flavor. But the view of the ocean makes up for that..lol

Kimberly B.

Great service except the hostess, not such a friendly face but it was a holiday and I applaud everyone who works on days people would like to enjoy some good food and be out of the house. Our server was great though and checked on us very often maybe a bit too often but it's ok. We like to do our little staycations for these long weekends and this was our first time staying in Malibu area. Food was good but I would say a bit overrated. I wanted to try this place for so long and heard great things about it as it's been around a long time. I'm glad we finally came to try it. The view I must say is definitely worth it. It's beautiful and calm out here.

Amazing. Always a good time at this restaurant! You can't beat the view either. We were here the day after thanksgiving and easily were seated with 6 people. The service was great, clam chowder was tasty as well as all the appetizers.

Oysters
Sherly C.

Ambiance was great, very nice setting. However I do have to mention, their host couldn't care less if you lived or died. I'm just going to leave it at that. Oysters: 9/10 They came from Vancouver, very buttery, a little salty. Overall, was very good and fresh. Braised Short Ribs: 9/10 this is something you would go for if you are feeling comfort food. The meat itself melts and overall very well cooked. Not too much overwhelming flavoring, the short ribs itself was well preserved. Lobster and Crab Linguine 10/10: The pasta itself is cooked perfectly. The blend of both lobster and crab was delicious along with the sauce. Nothing over the top, which gave it the perfect balance.

Spicy ahi tuna tartare

Spent a Sunday exploring Malibu and made a reservation for Moonshadows because I had seen multiple TikToks/IG Reels praising the restaurant for its delicious food, beautiful views, and great ambiance. I walked in with high expectations, but the overall experience left a lot to be desired. We were lucky to have snagged a valet spot (parking was $12). The lot is fairly small, and we got one of the last spots - but the restaurant was only about 75% full when we went in (which might explain why there was parking available). Upon entering, we were greeted and seated fairly quickly right by the windows overlooking the ocean. I think it would have been nicer to have gone when the sun was still up, but fortunately there were lights at the base of the restaurant by the water, so we could still look out and see the waves. It was strangely quiet inside the restaurant - I don't think there was any music playing, or the volume was very low. I think having music playing, or having it playing louder, would have been nice since the tables are all pretty close to one another. We went with a few appetizers (spicy ahi tuna tartare, tender barbequed octopus, and duck & shiitake mushroom spring rolls) and main courses (short ribs papparadelle and miso glazed black cod). The spicy ahi tuna tartare was probably the best dish. It was flavorful, and there was a lot of tuna. I do wish there were more chips (I think there were 4 pieces?). The short ribs papparadelle was also pretty good - the noodles were a nice texture, and the short ribs were great, but it got too tomatoey after a few bites. I was pretty disappointed by everything else, though. The octopus was rubbery and bland, the duck in the spring rolls was really dry, and the black cod didn't have much flavor. We wrapped up dinner with the creme brulee and souffle cake. Both were pretty good. I'm a sucker for creme brulee, but the souffle cake was also really good. I do think the cake got too sweet with the filling and sauce, but it tasted great. Overall, the restaurant could be a good choice if you want a meal with a view. I'd recommend going when the sun is up - even better, snagging a reservation during sunset. The food and ambiance left a lot to be desired, though. I don't know if I'd recommend this place to friends, especially if they were looking for good food, but perhaps the view overlooking the water is enough of a pull for others!

The location is well worth the trek to this spot. Really cute place for a date in the area. We came for brunch without reservations, and it wasn't overly busy during the day so we were able to get seating with a great view of the ocean outside. Portions were surprisingly large in a good way. Came with complimentary bread that was nicely toasted. I had the crispy potato galette, which had a good amount of smoked salmon. It wasn't too salty and I like how crispy the potato was. My boyfriend really liked his black cod. We left pretty full and I could see myself back. The parking situation is ok. Valet is $12 and we had cash on us so it worked out just fine. There's nearby PCH parking but we didn't bother trying to make the trek across the street for the free parking.

The elk was cooked perfectly, but needed a more acidic sauce....though tasty, the sauce was a little too sweet, taking away from the elk flavor. The Bison short rib was amazing in this game trip, with the quail, again....cooked well, but not the best flavor. My filet was perfect, and I loved the contrast of the wasabi mashed potatoes. Oh, and sorry...that picture came out blurry. My mom's choice couldn't be made, so the manager and chef accommodated her by altering a dish to something she thoroughly enjoyed. Very cool of them. For nearly $100 per person, rib steak that was sous vide to medium, then served nearly well done and completely undersalted is unacceptable for a restaurant asking for this much coin. The steak sandwich was completely reliant on the aoli sauce between the dry ciabatta bread, and again showcasing how underwhelming the steak was by being undersalted. One of our dishes was completely forgotten, and had to be followed up on. Surrounding tables had similar issues. Eggs benedict with smoked salmon was a hit The starter salads / french onion soup and desserts were tasty, with the banana / blueberry bread pudding and tres leches cake being the stars. Avoid this after-thought of a brunch if you can, stick to their dinner menu and enjoy the incredible ambiance that is Saddle Peak Lodge. What a disaster though! For $800, Fogo de Chao, Maestros, Flemmings, even a drive to Alexanders in Pasadena would of been memorable. Shoot, should of just gone to Lure for the 10,000th time, at least it would of offered the same boring consistency. Super disappointed in Saddle Peak Lodge, as my family and I come here 1-2 times a year for dinner. Sadly this experience sums up why their over-all Yelp score is 3.5 stars now, and I'm sadly adding fuel to the fire for what once was one of my favorite restaurants.

Once they finished, the waitress came over and took our order. I went with the surf & turf, while everyone else went with the fish & chips. I loved the lobster, peas and mashed potatoes but my steak was a little too fatty for me. I cut off the fat and ate the middle but it was still a lot of fat left. The Golden Bull in Santa Monica is one such classic stalwart, serving Santa Monica Canyon for over 75 years (nearly as long as McDonald's has been in existence). Over the decades, this seaside chophouse has been synonymous with a mean steak and a stiff cocktail; even a recent renovation and change in ownership stayed true to the Golden Bull's core. Now, the Golden Bull remains one of the most highly recommended steakhouses in LA. Waves are crashing across Pacific Coast Highway just blocks away. Outside, the prior parking lot has been converted into a breezy street-ery. The moody interior feels straight out of an episode of Mad Men, apart from the 90s pop echoing around the room. White-linen tables are pressed up to reupholstered leather booths. The dark wooden walls are decorated with historic black-and-white photographs and portraits. A blue-toned tropical aquarium serves as the centerpiece of the trim backlit bar. I visited with my family for weekend "Golden Hour," and the space was mostly deserted. We ordered dinner and drinks across both the happy hour and standard menus. The sleeper hit of our meal was the Buttermilk Onion Rings. These rich, shoestring-style rings were plenty capable as a standalone side, but they were enhanced by the tangy garlic aioli and zingy chipotle mayo. The crispy, skin-on Garlic Herb French Fries were no slouch, either, as a sidekick to the onion rings. The other happy hour specials were less memorable; the Canyon Caesar was mostly standard, while the Fried Calamari was crispy but dry and underseasoned. The 16oz NY Strip was on the fatty side, but the deliciously seasoned, well-cooked meat never for a second needed a drop of steak sauce. The French Onion Soup was heavy on Gruyere and bageutte while curiously light on onion. The Creamed Spinach was hardly creamy or cheesy, and the spinach was unseasoned. Lastly, my Old Fashioned was stiff and otherwise standard. The service was sluggish but friendly. The happy hour prices were plenty reasonable, while the steak alone approached $70. Not all of the items were hits, but collectively, our meal was a success. In the future, I will be sure to re-order the onion rings, while I may venture further into the Golden Bull's delectable steak lineup.

Which leads us to the knew restaurateur breathing new life into the space - I wish I knew her name but if you see a blonde dreaded woman with a big smile and a warm aura, you've spotted her. Hence the very apt name, "La Chingona". More than likely you'll spot her in the kitchen, chatting with the kids or suggesting a menu item to a first time visitor. What started as a staple food truck in the canyon thankfully evolved into this new Froggy's restaurant. We had missed Froggy's. We have 3 (dinner) restaurants but after Froggy's closed, our last watering hole went with it. Froggy's decor embodies old school Topanga - ie eclectic, funky and unabashedly cool. It's clapboard, haphazard, indoor/outdoor space with a deck up high amongst the oaks. There's history here that you can feel but also gives it an edge of age perhaps from the sporadically placed portholes in the walls. There are a number of spaces in which to find a spot to dine and they also have a pool table in the high ceiling space near the entry. They also kept the little pond with the waterlilies. This is not a place you come for fine dining. With Topanga Canyon you must accept overlooking abandoned buses and vehicles along with the gorgeous nature. It's just the Canyon for you. This is a rugged Topanga Canyon watering hole that was desperately missed. There is no waiter service. You order your food and bring a number to your table. You separately order at the small bar for beer, wine and agave beverages. If any of you remember Aubelitas, Froggy's new identity is intriguingly reminiscent. The food is as good as ever! I don't know how but I think her handmade tortillas are even more delicious here.
