For an appetizer, we ordered the Fried Calamari and the rest of dinner consisted of the Miso Glazed Black Cod & Tiger Shrimp Rigatoni. The appetizer was yummy and pro tip: do a half dip of the Chipotle Aioli and Marinara sauce! I already felt full from this and their complimentary bread, however it is worth noting that the main courses were not left unattended. The miso cod held a buttery texture and the side of bok choy and shiitake mushrooms made sense, but the green tea rice, not so much. The shrimp and rigatoni were simple yet had such a nice flavor with zucchini and shaved ricotta. While the food and views were super heart eyes, the lack of sanitation was stark-after being seated immediately, our plates had slight dark marks on them and our server brought a tea pot of hot water which had mold under the lid. The restaurant has been opened since 2001, and I'm not too sure if their dinnerware has been replaced since then, but if not, you are better off making pasta at home with a background of ocean waves crashing. read more

I can't say enough about the incredible experience we had at Moonshadows! We were a party of 17 celebrating an engagement, and due to unforeseen traffic, we ended up arriving 1.5 hours late for our evening reservation. We had a reservation on a Wednesday night. It wasn't too busy since it was late at night. The restaurant is right on the coast of Malibu and the view is amazing, but because we came at night it was dark. I can't imagine how beautiful it would be to come at sunset hour. Nothing was really special food wise. Our server was super friendly and funny, although our food took forever to come out. Especially for having only three tables in the restaurant, we'd expect the food not to take more than 30-40 minutes, but it took an hour for our food to come out. I will say when our food came out it did seem fresh out of the kitchen, but some items were not cooked to par. I got the miso cod and personally I loved my dish! It was cooked to perfection and paired well with the green tea jasmine rice. The portion was huge as well that I had to bring it home. The pear salad was delicious and I'm not a fan of bleu cheese but I thought it enhanced the dish quite well. The seafood dish wasn't anything special or out of the ordinary. My uncle got the filet and it seemed they butterfly cut the steak which made the steak to look really thin. He asked for it medium rare, but it was definitely well done. It was way too dry and even sauce couldn't save it. Overall, I give it a three stars because for the price of the dishes waiting 30 minutes to order, and another hour for the food to come out. This was my second visit to Moonshadows, and unfortunately, it will most likely be my last. I had an incredibly frustrating experience due to an issue with their server. My waitress charged my credit card twice and then blamed American Express, claiming my card had declined. To make matters worse, she identified us out to another table, telling them that American Express cards were declining. I immediately contacted American Express, who confirmed that they had not declined any charges. It turned out to be an issue on Moonshadows' end. The most disappointing part of the experience was the lack of accountability. The waitress offered every excuse imaginable but never once apologized for the misinformation or the embarrassment caused by falsely claiming my card had been declined. Customer service at Moonshadows was severely lacking, and this experience has left a bad taste in my mouth. I expected more from a place that prides itself on a great dining experience. read more

Moonshadows was a nice spot in theory, however the weather didn't agree so there wasn't much of a sunset, and the ambiance was a little loud and chaotic due to the other diners, the waves crashing, and the music blaring from the speakers. The hostess was a little standoff-ish but the wait staff was nice and even let us move tables next to a heat lamp, although there were large lapses in between check-ins and I only got a water refill once. The food took awhile to come out, but the quality and size were surprisingly great based off of old reviews! The tiger prawn rigatoni was flavorful and the miso cod was buttery however the green tea rice was oddly crunchy in some parts and mushy in other bites? I'd say make sure to check the weather to see if it's worth trying a sunset view, and decent food (albeit pricy) and you're stuck with either $10 valet or parking across PCH, but if you do end up going here it's worth a try read more

The views are breathtaking; the food nor the service can claim high honor. We had a Zen friend in town and wanted to show him the California life.. We took him to moon shadows for lunch. The Zen feeling of the ocean for ambience was the only good thing about our visit. They do a good job valet parking and asking you if you have a reservation before you get out of the car so you won't have to wait for hours. However, with a reservation, we still had to wait about 30 minutes--standing in the bar area. Once seated, we ordered drinks. Unfortunately, that's where the snafus began. Our drinks were delivered--on us! Our server was very nice, but he spilled the drinks on the table and on two of my friends. There was an immediate cleanup crew but the laxadaisical attitudes of the servers and management is what ruined this experience. Another server had previously come over to let us know that our server was a trainee. However when the drinks were spilled, this server did not revisit our table but to redeliver the drinks. No words or apologies. I expected management to immediately come over, as 2 of my friends were doused in alcohol. The white manager on duty did not visit our table in the whole 30 minutes we waited. I was getting hot, while the other two were getting beyond... I stopped the next worker I saw, who happened to be a manager just coming on duty. Thus he got an ear full from one of my friends in whom the drink was spilled upon. His reaction was less than managerial. He stated, "I just got here." Instead of stating, "I'll check with my staff and come back over to you immediately." The food was not all that great and these reactions made it worse. Thankfully at the end management redeemed themselves and gave us 50% off the bill. However, no one still addressed the cleaning bill of my 2 friends. read more

Moonshadow probably has one of the best views in Malibu. My SP made reservations and we arrived a little early but they were able to seat us right away. The view really is breathtaking and we luckily got to see dolphins as we ate. You really feel like you are on vacation while dining there. Once seated they give you complementary warm bread and butter which is divine. To start we shared their calamari, burrata salad, and dungeness crab cake. The calamari was a large portion but was eh. It was fried a little too much. The burrata salad was good but nothing spectacular. The crab cake was probably the best appetizer we had there. It was a large crab cake served with a delicious arugula salad with a yummy citrus dressing. The crab cake was filled with yummy dungeness crab. It did not disappoint. For our food I went with their Fish of the Day which happened to be Seabass. It is usually served with rice but I asked them to sub for veggies. The veggies were perfect but the seabass was a little overcooked for my liking. Although it was still really good and such a large piece of meat. I was really full. My plate came with some sort of yummy butter sauce. My SP got their dungeness crab and shrimp salad which he thought was okay. Pricing is pretty good here. It was about $200 and we thought that was really good for everything. The food wasn't super amazing but we both had such a good time and really enjoyed the ambience. This review is strictly regarding Mother's Day dinner. A reservation for 6 people was made a month in advance. When we arrived, we were seated promptly by the host. Our party was lucky to be seated outdoor right above the ocean. Our party was not aware that Moonshadows only offered a Mother's Day dining menu with limited choices because it was our first time. I was a tad disappointed because they weren't doing any fried food. Food: we started with a dozen oysters and I had some shells in my mouth. Other than that, the sauces that were provided complimented well. The prosciutto mozzarella with balsamic vinegar was very tasty. It was light and great way to start the appetizer round. Main course: I had the prawn ravioli and the size of these raviolis was huge. After taking a few bites, I just had to share it with someone. Overall it was a pleasing dish, but I would not order it again. Dessert: I ordered the tiramisu and cheesecake. The cheesecake was very light which reminded me of a Japanese cheesecake instead of a traditional New York. Drink: I treated myself with a Hennessy Mai Tai and oh boy, it got me buzzed. If you're a drinker, definitely order it. Service: Since it was a busy Mother's Day, the service was still incredible despite a holiday. I really wanted to love this place. I made a reservation requesting outdoor seating and was sat inside in a booth not next to any window, net to the wall. I was sitting with the desire to see some waves, but it was impossible from our seat. The hostess said, "I know you made a reservation, but there's no guarantee." This was especially sad since it was an anniversary dinner for two, not even a big party that might need major accommodations. Then I thought, well, the food has to be great. I had the tartar as my main meal, and it was just mushy. I did not even finish the appetizer as my main meal. My husband ordered the pasta, which was very limited. The complimentary bread was probably the best part of our dinner. As I waited for my food, I was able to sneak in a view from the balcony. They have the view, service , and atmosphere down pat however they need to step up the food a notch. We just got back from Eddie V's last week . The food is exceptional there so maybe it's just a hard act to follow. Everything was pretty good and has large portions but just not exceptional. Love this place! My girlfriend recommended a girls night here and it was amazing. We had a group of 7, and were able to get a table right away. Food and drinks were good , and the service was even better. Our waiter Ben was the absolute best. He was kind and patient (you know how girls night can be lol). Parking-parking with valet service was $12, we went on a Sat night so parking on the street wasn't feasible since it was packed. Service- great attentive server. They also have this bar type of sitting area overlooking the ocean which is very cool.. This was amazing! Very soft, buttery, and finger-licking good! My boyfriend got the ahi tuna steak, which was slightly bland and nothing out of the extraordinary. Just ok. Dessert: Valrhona Chocolate & Gianduja Soufflé Cake and Traditional Panna Cotta. I'm usually not a panna cotta fan but this one was very light and refreshing after a fish dish. The soufflé was a little rich but a good combo with espresso. As much as I enjoyed the meal and the view, I don't think I'll come back here for dinner, as the ahi tuna dish was underwhelming and the drive was a bit brutal.
